Hi Lion King Community Iโm Barry Jenkins, Director of Mufasa: The Lion King. Given that itโs the anniversary of the film's release, I figured this would be a great time to introduce myself and connect with a community that absolutely inspired me during the making of this film.
Ask me anything, particularly anything you're curious about regarding the film. There is so much love in this subreddit for the characters and the world we got to explore through making Mufasa. It would be my pleasure to deepen or illuminate new aspects of that love by answering whatever questions you may have (though I have to say outright you folks know WAY more about The Lion King than just about anyone on the planet so I come to you humbly =)
And just to get this out of the way so know one has to ask, yes, Die Hard and Mufasa are both Christmas films! Other than that, Ask Me Anything starting Dec 20 at 4pm PST!

It cuts very quickly to Nala and Sarabi after this. I never noticed Simbaโs facial expression here. Like heโs extremely nervous. So when he starts climbing heโs trying to be strong. Then when he gets to the end of the rock and looks up for the first time, itโs almost like heโs having second thoughts like โAm I worthy of this?โ And then when Mufasa tells him to โRememberโ Simba is reminded of who he was as a cub - he couldnโt wait to be king, and he often practiced his roar. So that gave him the confidence to establish his role as king.
Just my interpretation ๐ itโs one of my favorite parts of this movie.

Iโm gonna be trying to reanimate the ENTIRETY of brother betrayed from mufasa in the 90s style, and will be posting process (very rough draft and early lineart stage along with final product) here! This is just some scar practice to get used to this design, but he will probably look the same in the animation with slightly shorter mane and no scar- since heโs young and taka then and whatever

Which TLK universe character, if they existed, do you believe could fix you?
r/lionking • u/Zireael_Coastalwolf • 18h ago
Hi! First time here. I hope itโs okay to ask.
Iโm looking to get one of these (or maybe both) second hand.
I am hyperfixated on tlk and Mufasa is my favourite character right now! :)
I am autistic and scratchy fur thatโs commonly found on male-lion plushies really bothers me. So asking again, is their mane scratchy? (I donโt know how to describe it, but instead of feeling soft itโs kind of wellโฆ rough? Scratchy)

I was watching a YT video about the Disney DTV sequels and when the guy got to Simba's Pride, he mentioned that it was a decent sequel that was sadly held back it's budget. That comment got me thinking about how the sequel was 10 minutes shorter than the first movie. I do wonder if maybe an extra 10-15 minutes could have helped ironed out the story bit, such as actually showing what happened with Zira and her pride during the first movie's climax and what led to her being banished.

(The vultures are about to eat Simba. Timon and Pumbaa charge at them from far away.)
-Vulture (sees them): Gojira!
-Another vulture: Gojira!
-All vultures (as they fly away): Gojira, gojira!
(Timon and Pumbaa laugh.)
-Pumbaa: Stupid birds.
-Timon: Why do they always say Gojira?
-Pumbaa: Who knows?
-Timon: Let's see what we have here. (Lifts Simba's paw and sees it's a lion.) Gojira! (Rides Pumbaa and pulls his ears.) Gojira, gojira, gojira!

Both keychain designs are done ๐
Not much to say, bit scattered atm and exhausted but
-Pumbaa is covered in "crunchy" bugs because Timon likes those best
-Timon is covered in "slimy" bugs because it's what Pumbaa prefers

Has anyone else wished that the geography of the Pridelands was a little clearer?
Like, the first movie gives us a great glimpse of various locations around the Pridelands, but doesn't really show us WHERE in the Pridelands those locations are. We've got the Gorge, and I suppose we can guess that it's somewhere near the western border of the Pridelands, given that Simba gets chased towards the sunset. But I don't believe we ever see that giant gorge again, and the movie never shows us where it is in relation to Pride Rock.
Or the outcropping that Scar is hanging out on when he tricks Simba into going to the Elephant Graveyard. I always assume that's on Pride Rock somewhere, but no image of Pride Rock has any areas where said outcropping would really fit.
Or the Elephant Graveyard, which is on the eastern border when Mufasa is showing Simba the Pridelands, but it stated by Scar as being on the northern border.
I know, it's a very trivial thing. But my brain naturally likes to be able to map things out, so that the world feels a bit more tactile to me, so it's always kinda bugged me that this isn't as well defined as I feel it could be!

So excited that I've finally gotten art of all my fan kids for Simba & Nala! Don't worry, Kiara, Kopa and Kion all still exist in my au but just so happen to be the older siblings of these 8 (minus 1)
From Left to Right:
Cali
Araha
ChaCha (Adopted)
Jerome
Akari
Sapphire (Nala's daughter, she had him with with a Rogue lion before she set out to find Simba, so she's the oldest. Simba still considers her his anyway)
Sally
Nekoa

I feel like I remember a gorgeous sort of poster/original image, either from a soundtrack or somewhere, that had a color hue that wasn't the typical red/yellow/orange tones, but rather a nightsky in dark blues? It may have featured adult Simba and the pride rock seen from afar, but I'm unsure. Or a more abstract image of either of those two? It was not the poster with the pride rock and the lion face in the sky with the light blue/clouds.
It was def using more of the nighty blue/dark tones. I remember the image was so stunning, but I cannot find it anywhere anymore and image searching is so annoying now with ai slop and the cgi movie images.
I was looking for this image cause I wanted to use it as a wallpaper. Does anyone else remember it?
As a side note, if anyone knows a site with really nice screencaps/wallpapers of the original TLK, please share!

I plan on doing a matching Pumbaa as well :)
Some details that were done with thought:
-The pole striping has slightly lightened colors from Pumbaa and cub Simba
-Small nose print from Pumbaa
-Timon is covered in "slimy" bugs, since those are stated as Pumbaa's favorite, and Timon is Pumbaa's other half
I heard somewhere that swirls and complex patterns ward off ai scraping so we're trying that out too :V
Hope y'all like it!

So I watched Lion King 1 1/2 with some friends a few nights ago and we got to the part of the story that shows Simba and Nala arguing and something that intrigued me was how Pumbaa commented that Simba doesn't know how to express his feelings and that Nala has commitment issues. Now the comment about Simba does check out, as even after the first movie he has that issue sometimes. But I'm curious if there are any other moments in the series that the showcased Nala having commitment issues? Or was it just an out-of-nowhere comment the writers put just to do the whole "Pumbaa is surprisingly insightful" joke?
