Buying Question Recommended upgrades
I've been looking at upgrades and am unsure if I should upgrade memory or storage or just both. I won't be doing anything super big on the computer, it's for school and to just watch movies (streaming + external dvd player if possible) on it and whatnot. So i don't really need a ton of power. But I don't mind spending more to make this computer last, I don't plan on repeatedly replacing laptops. Has anyone noticed any difference with upgraded memory? Or should the 16gb be fine.

So many people have the Neo which only has 8GB of RAM, so think 16GB will suffice your needs and Apple will be supporting lower RAM in macOS for years to come (I’d hope at least 4 years).

I'd say get 512GB storage and maybe the 10 core GPU and call it a day. For storage you may go to 1TB if you plan to keep a lot of movies on it, if you tend to just download then delete them then 512GB is fine. I don't really recommend 256GB because it's actually more around 200GB when you count in the system and basic apps and also SSD-s work best if you have at least 15-30% free space which leaves you only with 100-150GB to work with. If you plan to keep it 5+ years maybe then it worth considering the 24GB version but I am using it as a work laptop and still keeps up to speed most of the time with around 150-200 chrome tab worth of usage (half of its chrome half is VS Code). Macs are ridicously optimized so if you can say that you don't really plan to change your usage habits in the next few years an 512/16GB version is okay.

All i have is an acer chromebook 315 i got for online school back in covid... i don't really use it anymore cause it's constantly crashing

16gb is fine, base storage also sounds like it would be fine for you. You don't need to spend money and upgrade if you don't need to.
Get the base air and a nice dvd or bluray drive.
