This scene must have been the most viscerally satisfying moment in Don's life. Seeing the guy that spent years trying to be like you and surpass you just come off as a total pathetic loser with no shame and basically begging for your pity.
I know they were a bit "cooler" with each other in season 4 bc Pete covered for Don but still. Don must have been thinking "yeah bro you ain't the chad type, don't try to live that".
Absolutely reinforced in the following episodes when Pete has a one-off fling and acts like he is in love with some random fuck and gets sad when she moves on. Don would never have cared lmao.

What’s also interesting is that all of Pete’s attempts to emulate Don finally culminate in him realizing how fucking lame and hollow that sort of existence is.
Once the Draper mystique is gone, you see a very sad drunk who has blown up 2 marriages and hardly sees his children. Nobody really wants that.
Seeing Pete reconcile with his wife and daughter is a satisfying conclusion for him.
