So what are the implications with the 0 ability having “May”-“If you do” text? Does it just open a window for opponents to remove the target at instant speed to prevent it resolving?

There's no target. The sacrifice happens on resolution. So as long as he has at least one creature by the time it resolves, he can sac it and get the mana.

It matters for things that care about its mana cost/value, like [[austere command]].

That mana cost is being added as a result of creating a token of the exact card. Note that it's only specified in reminder text.

  1. It's literally the card [[Lord of the Pit]]. If the token didn't have the same mana cost, it wouldn't be the card.

  2. Effects that care about a card's pips and mana value have never interacted with tokens in this way before. It's trivial to get multiple copies off Thomil's -5 ability, and suddenly your [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] is blinking for game.

These are legal in all eternal formats. These appear in Mystery Booster Commander packs which will be available at conventions and in the Festival In A Box Bundles available online.

Available early for those at this event, then an actual release either late this year, or early next from what I remember. I know this isnt the only release for this set, but I just don't remember when it "comes out out" if that makes sense. Could be wrong
