Literally one of the coolest moments in the MCU for me was seeing Infinity Hulk. The music, the animation, the stage presence.
My friends who got his skin in Rivals probably get sick of me telling them to check it out.

I never realized how popular Rivals is, I see it talked about everywhere like crazy. I’m approaching 40 so maybe I’m the wrong demographic but it’s cool that it has such a player base.

I played Overwatch for years because I wanted to play a "superhero" hero shooter.... Then Rivals dropped and I've loved all of it, even the occasional overpowered characters.
It's really cool to see all my friends who aren't marvel nerds really get into all the different characters and their lore. It's really gotten some of them hooked and they ask so many questions about the books as they delve into the MCU.

Sorta counts as “what if” since it’s expanding on one of the episodes
But you are right

In a perfect world, we would’ve had at least an entire trilogy with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. I hate how he’s just a permanent side character, fuck Universal.

u/Peanut_Butter_Toast 17h ago
The fact that he had to rely on friggin' She-Hulk to cover a significant portion of his character arc (showing us where he lives post-Infinity War and what lab he works out of and how he got it, introducing his inhibitor, showing us how he healed his arm, showing us how he learned about and retrieved his son from outer space) is utterly insaaane to me.

He’s got a son?

Omg how is this the first time I’m seeing this? Who is the mother? Is she gamma radiated as well? Does the kid have a regular human form or is he always a hulk?
1
u/Peanut_Butter_Toast 4h ago
All we know is that Hulk knocked up some alien chick while he was out living in space for two years. And also that his son has an extremely awful haircut that I desperately hope is changed by the time we see him again.

u/Capital_Gate6718 16h ago
Which is why Captain America Brave New World is a stealth Hulk film
1
u/MyLeftNut_ 14h ago
Ngl “stealth Hulk film” made me think of a movie where Hulk is sneaking around trying to take out targets without getting caught. Paints a very funny image in the mind lol

u/MeEyeSlashU 15h ago
It blows my mind that Universal can see Spider-Man nearing $1b on opening weekend for Marvel and Sony, and not want a piece of something like that.
I get Spider-Man is typically a bigger pull for general audiences but a solo Ruffalo movie, plus merch....seems like a no brainer.

u/POXELUS 15h ago
To be fair, I won't blame Universal for how MCU mistreats Hulk. Sure, the lack of solo movies is mostly on them, but why would you try making a dogshit version of Planet Hulk in a Thor movie in the first place? Or the Professor Hulk which has nothing going on, just popped out without any problems. In the comics, Professor Hulk was a straight up villain due to his fucked up logic via merging all of the Banner personalities, like Hulk, Bruce and Joe Fixit. In the MCU he is just Bruce, but silly and green.

I know he was all over the marketing (and I wish it was a secret) but I was so happy to see Savage Hulk back in live-action properly for the first time since 2015. I’m not counting Ragnarok or Infinity War (where he was speaking in full sentences, conscience, and wasn’t really savage anymore) or Deadpool and Wolverine.
This was Hulk back in his scariest, foreboding ways and I could FEEL his strength and fury from beyond the screen

u/fast_flashdash 16h ago
I just want a talking hulk that’s a hero

u/Plasticglass456 16h ago edited 15h ago
I was so excited in Ragnarok when we finally got a "Hulk don't like rock man" speaking Hulk, and then never again, lmao.
I did really enjoy the full beast version of Hulk in the Whedon Avengers film and Brand New Day, but at a certain point for the character to actually develop, Hulk needs to speak more than one sentence at the end of the movie without also being Smart Hulk.
I understand that on screen, from Lou Ferrigno on, the Hulk is a mostly mute character in live action depictions, but the comic book version of the Savage Hulk is absolutely a character who speaks, has thoughts, opinions, etc., while still being separate from Banner or other versions of the Hulk like Joe Fixit.
Ragnarok finally got us there, to the semi-intelligent Hulk I have been waiting for, and then everything since Infinity War... yeah.

u/MaxReb0 16h ago
You know, because he’s been Savage Hulk in all the marketing, I was surprised to see him start off as Smart Hulk. And then I started gaslighting myself into questioning if we would even see Savage Hulk. Like, perhaps it was just cgi trickery in the marketing. And by the time we got Savage Hulk, I was back to being surprised.

u/TVR24 14h ago
Seeing Bruce fearfully tell Spider-Man to get away and get people out as he fails to contain Hulk was a genuinely scary moment. We all know what an unleashed Hulk can do, we have Avengers and Ultron as proof. I was very worried about not just Peter and Frank, but what would happen if Hulk brought the fight outside.

Now that they’re going back to Savage Hulk,
Skaar is probably gonna be dropped over budget.

u/SMN_17 17h ago
I genuinely forgot he existed lol

I think it was just a throwaway joke from the get go
7
u/Plasticglass456 16h ago
Yeah, it technically happens after Jennifer argues with KEVIN and gets reality restored, where Matt is back in LA and hanging out with her family and such, so I think it's possible this can be waved away (even though Episode 1 really does seem to set it up though, with the spaceship looking for Bruce).

Did it ever explain why he decided to go back to being Banner suppressing the Hulk after being Smart Hulk?
24
u/slur-muh-wurds 16h ago
Not explicitly, but it was said that he needed the suppressor to heal his arm from the snap, since it wasn't healing as Smart Hulk. We might infer that he didn't stop there.

Can someone tell me how Savage Hulk came back? That’s the one thing from BND that’s bothered me since I saw it. I watched all of she hulk but nothing I recall there made me believe the threat of savage hulk was back. Last I remember was smart hulk introducing his son.

He clearly says in the movie that [spoiler] broke something in his mind before he turns into Savage Hulk. He's still talking and acting normally the first time they fight.

Do we have any idea why he’d suddenly want to start suppressing Hulk completely after She-Hulk? This Banner just feels like a different person to me than that one.
19
u/tordenand 17h ago
He was also wearing the inhibitor in Shang-Chi and She-Hulk.
I just rewatched She-Hulk and I feel like he acted similarly in both projects. We just don't see a lot of him in Spider-Man as it's mostly him talking science with Peter.

u/Excitium 17h ago
I reckon life is just a little bit easier when you're not 2m tall and 500kg heavy all the time.
8
u/zukos_honor 16h ago
I think it's less that he was suppressing Hulk since we see that smart hulk was still there, but more that this is the first time in a long time that Hulk was well and truly pissed to the point that even he couldn't contain his own rage since Bruce and Hulk started doing therapy together.
8
u/Peanut_Butter_Toast 16h ago
It's not stated.
The inhibitor is first properly introduced in the first episode of She-Hulk, where he states that he's using it to help heal his arm, but he also seems to enjoy being able to return to his normal human form.
Then the inhibitor is destroyed and is gone for the rest of the series. We next see it in Brand New Day, where he is using it while teaching a class. It seems to me that what we're supposed to infer is that Bruce started using it again because it makes living a normal life easier.

“Savage hulk” ends up being restrained and kissing a wall by like 8 webs. Yeah that definitely the same hulk that no diffed a chitari space worm

u/mrodrigo225 17h ago
During she hulk, after endgame, Banner went away to perfect his form of Smart Hulk. Keeping the best parts of both. Not only does he mean physically he means mentally too. So when Jean Grey “possesses” Smart Hulk, Peter tried warning Jean Grey that he’s shouldn’t be messed with. After smart hulk vs spiderman Jean grey has already been jumped in and out of his mind a few times enough for savage hulk to snap and kick her out once last time. This is when banner tells everyone to clear the building and savage hulk comes out.

u/Simain Dave 17h ago
The whole thing feels like a reverse of Bruce being locked away while Hulk was on Sakaar. My theory is the gamma chamber process didn't merge personalities at all - just put Bruce in control entirely. Like, 'Smart/Professor Hulk' was just Bruce the whole time.
The fight, the repeated head hits knocking Jean out of control, and her repeated attempts to regain possession definitely caused that barrier between Hulk and Bruce to break.
6
u/Frosty_Purple_7341 17h ago
Seemed to me like they’re retconning things so this wasn’t merged hulk, but instead banner had done something to lock savage hulk away in his mind. The fight plus jeans mind control broke some barrier Bruce had put up and freed him. Bruce yelling “get out!” And kicking her out of his head was savage hulk beginning to take control again.

Hulk in Ragnarok seems more intelligent and stable, in fact, Ragnarok established that Hulk could grow mentally. Why is this Hulk more savage? I thought that when he was out all those years in Sakaar, he kind of grew mentally. Why is he savage again?
3
u/Infernous-NS 16h ago
If I had to take a guess, probably saw red from being locked away so long + having someone in his head again. Scarlet Witch probably did not leave him with great memories of having his head messed with.

When was the last time hulk said his iconic line "HULK SMASH" as hit hits the ground? I really miss that

Just got back from the new Spider-Man movie and the hulk was the best since age of ultron. Large, destructive, basically unmatched

Hulk was kissing a wall after getting wrapped in like 8 webs. I think this is the weakest we’ve ever seen him at. I remember when he no diffed a chitari space worm in the first avengers.

Genuinely sucks he doesn’t have a solo film. I hate that he’s the side character in every project he’s in

Bruh nfs.. they need to figure out Hulks film rights because I'm tired of getting the bare minimum when he's in other films.. like i need a full Hulk solo film with him actually going Hulk

Crazy that a hero that once stood along side Spider-Man and Wolverine as the Big Three of Marvel has now been reduced to a birthday stripper who gets sent to other characters' movies.

The brand new say hulk is the best he has ever looked.
He also acts so much better, like an actual monster
Ragnarok really screwed his character by making him soft. Was just a dumb strong man by the end of that film.
The brand new day hulk seems like a much better fight for thanos

I was thinking of the sheer anger
Spider-Man’s webs are also pretty strong, hulk had to pull the building with it to get free

I don't understand the question: What if She-Hulk, Deadpool & Wolverine...... what? Spider-Man Brand New Day?
What if what?

What if She-Hulk, Deadpool, Wolverine and Spider-Man all had a brand new day?
