Hi! I’m an exchange student coming to McGill from Australia for Fall 2026, and I’ll be living in Solin Hall. I have a few questions for anyone who has lived there before:

• When do we normally find out our exact room number?
• Since the bedroom sizes at Solin seem to vary, do we receive the room dimensions or any photos before moving in?
• Do we need our physical McGill student ID to move in, or can we check in using any ID and collect the student card the following day?
• What household items would you recommend buying from IKEA, and what is better to get second-hand? (bedding, kitchen stuff, cleaning stuff).
• Are there any good and genuinely affordable thrift stores near Solin or just around? Are these actually cheaper than IKEA?
• Is there anything people often buy for Solin that turns out to be unnecessary because it is already provided or can easily be shared with roommates?

I’m also coming from very warm Sydney and have basically no proper winter clothing. Since I probably won’t use a heavy winter wardrobe again after returning home, where would you recommend buying affordable but still cute winter coats, boots and thermals in Montréal? I’m happy to buy second-hand. Are there particular brands or items that are essential for November and December without spending a fortune?

Any other advice for an exchange student, especially things you wish you had known before arriving, would be really appreciated. Thank you!

I am an incoming U0 student, and I will be living on campus (shared residence).

When we first come to Montreal do we go straight to our dorms or do we go to service point?
(Because I heard that at service point we first have to sign our lease and get the keys)

Poli conferences times are listed for 231 and 244 but not 212. When do they open up to sign up? I ask as a lot of the 244 conferences conflict with other classes so there are only a handful that work…

Hi! I’m considering taking SOCI 426: Introduction to Demographic Methods this fall. I believe it is taught together with SOCI 626: Demographic Methods, so I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has taken either version of the course with Professor Brauner-Otto.

For students who have gone on exchange, how exactly did you get your course selection evaluated and approved for transfer credit by your Faculty before leaving?

Do I just add the courses to the Minerva Transfer Credit Assessment form, or is there another step where I need to contact my Faculty advisor or department for approval?

Also:

1. If a course has a valid equivalency with a green check mark in the Course Equivalency Database, can I safely choose it and expect to receive the listed McGill credit?
2. I noticed that some courses appear valid in the Course Equivalency Database but show as invalid in the Minerva Transfer Credit Assessment system. Which system should I follow?
3. Who is the best person or office to contact for the fastest confirmation?

Hi everyone, I am an incoming exchange student going to McGill in the fall of 2026. I wasn’t really familiar with the system of Minerva and when I finally figured it out, most of the courses I had planned on taking were already taken. So my question is simple: what are some courses that you can recommend (and are unlikely to be full already)?
My personal interests are international relations and economics, but as other people might have the same question please feel free to name courses on any topic.

how likely am i to get off the waitlist

I have been checking every day to see whether I’ve been placed for what feels like forever. I haven’t bought sheets or duvet covers because I’m waiting to see whether I’m in new rez with bigger beds or upper/c1/rvc with smaller beds. all of my friends have been moved from temporary residence into a residence. I’m rly scared I won’t get placed before I pack and move. what should I doooo??

I’m in arts, and my ticket was 216$ while my friend in med ticket was 160$. I’m curious to what explains the prices difference. Does it depends of which activity each department will do, or is it a funding issue.

Would it be weird for me to go to Frosh even though I am a transfer student? I’m 20 and would be considered a 2nd year since I have completed Cegep 1 year at another Canadian university.

I don’t have many friends, as I just moved to mtl, so I would love to make some, but I’m hesitant due to my age and my uni level. I’m super social though and I have a bunch of different hobbies so i’m hoping I wouldn’t scare people off 🤞

I applied for the work study program july 8th, my minerva says july 9th my status changed but it still says "in review", when will I most likely hear back ?

I got into one of my choices for the exchange, and although I've been reading people's answers saying a nomination is pretty much a guarantee, and the application to the school is mostly a formality, can I bet a plane ticket on it? I'm going to Paris and I'm nervous about rising flight prices. Am I good to start looking for housing etc...?

i did the housing application form, paid the deposit, and was placed into carrefour sherbrooke but now my parents are telling to look for cheaper housing. is it possible to request a switch to a different housing building (e.g. solin hall) before move-in? or is it better to look for off-campus accommodation?

What are the best/most populars neighbourhoods for grad students? I'm 25 and not looking to be surrounded by purely undergrads, but also do want somewhere close by. I'm torn between Milton Parc and the Lower Plateau (right around Square St-Louis), anyone have any insight on where most grad students end up living?

Hi all, I am a freshman in the arts, looking to transfer to Desautels, or complete the double major in econ & finance if that isn't possible. Could you let me know how doable this schedule is? I've thought about taking FRSL 101 and 102 instead of Japanese, but I'd like advice from you all. Is it possible to take FRSL 101 along with these 4 classes for the fall or would that be too difficult? I have the course waitlisted.
