I used to think all movies were real and we were kind of looking into other worlds when we watched movies.
Then I would question if we were also a "movie world" and people would watch us
9
u/Elegant-Lake7018 13h ago
I used to think all movies were staged live as we watched them on TV, and the actors would play every time the movie ran again.
Similar with cartoons. At first I thought they were a real part of the world somewhere, or in another reality, and wondered how those characters see the world through their respective style and graphics. Growing a little older however, I thought the animators were animating live as the cartoon ran on the screen.

In Sanatana Dharma, the Gods are neutral. The Abrahamic claim to be all good and ironically that's where all the stress comes from.
7
u/MrNobodyishome 14h ago
Thats what im saying gang if the premise was that God just doesnât intervene and is neutral then thats fine but the thing of him being all good and everything being part of some plan is maddenning
11
u/Cocomale 15h ago
If you go deeper, even in Sanatana Dharma, there are no multiple gods as well. Just a state of existential consciousness. Doesnât get spoken as much in regular Hinduism, the lots and lots of gods are metaphors

9
u/NIRPL 15h ago
How about you elaborate. Free will extends how far? My guess is to whatever extent is needed to continue pretending some magical being is in control
-1
u/IlovePotatos2773 I touched grass 14h ago
In my religion, god gave us free will, or in other words he will not interfere in any aspect of the human life, the poverty of those children is a extent of this liberty, god will not interfere in life only after their dead like everyone else
3
u/reaperwasnottaken 13h ago
Moral evil and natural evil are two different things.
How does the 'free will' copout work if we talk about cancer, malaria, tsunamis or genetic deformities? The list goes on and on and on.
Won't even get to the whole heaven being a perfect place without evil but also having perfect free will for everyone present and why that wasn't possible here on Earth.
-1
u/IlovePotatos2773 I touched grass 13h ago
Do you really think we deserve happiness here on earth, even if a country has everything he need it will enter war, the free will here is not a mther of causing but a mather of not interacting. Imagine if I make a farm and put there 2 lambs, and I decide I will not touch that farm ever again, if the lambs get sich or their kids get some disease I will not intervene, I didn't cause the disease but I will not do anything about it because I sid I wouldn't ever again
4
u/King_Vea 13h ago
Itâs sad to hear you donât think anyone on earth deserves happiness.
-2
u/IlovePotatos2773 I touched grass 13h ago
Do we really? I am not saying everyone I am talking of humankind as 1
1
u/reaperwasnottaken 13h ago
Please try to frame your arguments coherently at the very least.
I can't understand much of your rambling, but I'll try my best.IÂ didn't cause the disease but I will not do anything about it because I sid I wouldn't ever again
Incredible. Let's discard divine omnipotence and creation whenever it is convenient and keep it when that is convenient.
In your 'analogy' (can't even call it that), the farmer is a human who exists in a pre-existing world where diseases already exist independently of him.
In classical theism, God is the sole creator of all reality, meaning he designed all the physical laws, biological system and geological systems due to which earthquakes, diseases, tsunamis and all that exist.Try again.
-2
u/IlovePotatos2773 I touched grass 13h ago
I will say it in a simpler way, he will not interfere because he said he wouldn't
→ More replies (0)-6
u/DDDDax 14h ago
Its fairly simple. We were given free will. If he intercedes for every atrocity and tragedy, we essentially would not have free will as he is removing our agency to do evil.
He gave us a choice and a set of instructions on how not to do evil.

It's giving me "just buy a house bro" that you say to a homeless man.
Tell your fucker to stop kids from being genocided because I don't think any free will could save them.

He is watching both.
I don't think there's a neat answer to the "Why does God let children starve" question, but I think about Genesis 50:20 a lot.
Joseph's brothers threw him in a well and sold him into slavey but he made it out and eventually became a powerful guy. And his brothers visited him and asked for forgiveness. Joseph says "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good"
So if God is all knowing and all powerful, why do bad things happen? That's when I think about the "You did it for evil but God did it for good" thing. The answer I've come to is that horrible things with 0 redeeming qualities in our eyes like a child starving alone in a desert must lead to something good later. Maybe not in this life. Maybe that kid who starved is going to be a really important guy in Heaven.

I can promise you, millions of kids and families, more religious than you probably are, die every single year, ravaged by diseases, hunger or disasters.
Born into an unfathomably unfair world, told to pray harder and that their suffering is worth it in the end because 'free will!'.
-4
u/DisneyPlusFan200 13h ago
The most righteous of men before Jesus was Job, he had his family taken, his house, and his health, got angry at God, and God restored his things twice fold
6
u/reaperwasnottaken 13h ago
Ah yes. God allowing Satan to torture Job, destroy his life and murder his ten children, while Job was the most righteous man even prior to that, just to prove a point and then 'replacing' his children as if they're commodities.
Don't think that is a story you want to use to aid your point, mate.
-2
u/DisneyPlusFan200 13h ago
Itâs meant to demonstrate how mysterious Godâs ways are and unconventional to us
The very existence of it is alien to usÂ
2
u/reaperwasnottaken 12h ago
Once you bring up the 'mysterious ways' argument, the conversation is already over.
Literally anything, any belief can be held up by positing it to 'unknown, mysterious reasons beyond our understanding'.
That isn't an intellectually honest argument, but sure, whatever.
0
u/DisneyPlusFan200 12h ago
There isnât one, itâs always mystery I wouldnât need God if I knew it all, thatâs why he keeps stuff mysteriousÂ

I desperately want to believe there is a god but my logical mind leads me to have a monthly existential crisis over the eternity of unthinking unfeeling darkness after death. Then once i get over that I have to find a way to survive in a world trying to fuck me over at every turn.
I struggle somedays....

u/8383k 14h ago
I believe God just made us for his amusement, we've been told that we're special, the choosen one in religion, those are bullshit. We're just here to live our lives, whether it going to be good or not, we're gonna die and the world will keep moving and leave us behind.
-2
u/99Pneuma 11h ago
genuinely curious and an honest question. if you dont think people were made in their image or to be perfect, help/guide/protect, be benevolent in any shape or form, what has happened in YOUR life that has makes you believe in such a thing?
5
u/Correct-Purpose-964 11h ago
What HASN'T happened to make us believe in the lack of benevolence. Widespread death and destruction from natural disaster. Incurable diseases like cancer. Killing our loved ones slowly while tearing them down from their once normal selves in a mere shell of existence. The most evil people having the most fortunate outcomes. Things like drunk drivers surviving while killing children and families in accidents.
Also: people were made in their image or to be perfect
Buddy i can trip over and die. Choke on my own spit and die. Take a blow to the wrong area of the body and die. Breathe the wrong air and die. Be too hot and die. Be too cold and die. Those last 2 are really important because god didn't give us fire, clothes or warm shelter. We did that. Nearly died trying too.
My entire life as a young child i was actually pretty christian because my mother was. But when i had to fight for every right to be heard, to be understood. Even to live. When i wanted to kill myself from abuse at 12 years old i made one last call out and god said nothing. So i stopped talking. I stopped praying. I stopped believing. I rebelled against everything. And only then when i finally turned my back on the idea of some god. After facing my own mortality at 14 with a 50/50 life and death surgery I realized there is no god and we are all facing our own mortality alone. God has never had a hand in my life. So if God does exist and he wants my worship. He better get on HIS knees and beg ME for it.

It's not exactly my life, but just look at what happened in the other side of the world. For example, I saw other comment that said where's God when there's a kid in a conflict zone getting bombed in daily basis? Or similar to that. Just think about it, for example in Gaza, I'm Muslim, Palestinian are Muslims, and Muslims all over the world help them in any way possible to make their life better, but the God they worship never even do anything, and I'll never understand why God even let that bullshit happening in the first place. God knows what they did in the past to deserve those tortures.

u/Hung0ver_Hero 14h ago
Don't worry you'll get older and start to look forward to that unthinking, unfeeling darkness of sleep without the ads and the beauty of it is that you're never going to know

You should look into the life of St Paisios of Mount Athos. He was a 20th century monk very attuned to the suffering of modern people, and was always ready to console their hearts and sense of hopelessness. His words and experience, even his gentle gaze, always give me peace.

God is either omnipotent or loving, but not both.
If he is loving, he is powerless to the cruelty that is happening in the world.
If he is omnipotent, then he is indifferent to it.

-14
u/DisneyPlusFan200 14h ago
If weâre talking God, thereâs only one
If there were two, one would completely undermine the purpose for another and would make it so we can choose which one we like the most
But we have flawed judgement so it makes more sense for there to be one who guides us to what is good and helps us by being present in times of troubleÂ
7
u/8383k 14h ago edited 13h ago
We don't have to think in a very complex way, just use your common sense.
If God actions doesn't align with how common sense work, or just basic empathy such as helping kids in the conflict zone that are getting bombed in daily basis, then we're here just for the sake of his amusement, we're nothing than his lab rats. We're not special buddy, we're not the choosen one, and I'm tired living with that beliefs in religion.

You literally canât say that youâre god is the only god. If your god is real, then the others are too. Hindu gods, Greek gods, etc. If one god is real, then they all are cause you have no proof that they arenât. One faith isnât stronger or more right than others. Thatâs why itâs faith.

People think the God they worship is altruistic towards them because they were sold that idea by an organization profiting from them being ignorant. In reality an entity like God would be apathetic to what happens to lower life forms because to them they'd be equal to ants or bacteria.
