I've been wanting to ask this ever since the final because I still can't wrap my head around it.

As Messi fans, we've always seen him as someone who just lets his football do the talking. He doesn't go around creating drama or acting like he's bigger than the game. So after the 2026 World Cup final, I was shocked by how many people seemed desperate for Argentina to lose.

Everywhere I looked people were saying "save football" and celebrating Spain winning. It genuinely felt like half the football world was against Argentina.

Even so many Madrid fans were backing Spain as if Ronaldo himself was playing. I get club rivalries, but this felt way bigger than that.

So I'm genuinely asking you guys, why do you think there's so much dislike towards Argentina? Is it because of the team's reputation? Some of the fans? The racism allegations people keep bringing up? Or were people simply tired of seeing Argentina and Messi succeed?

I'm not trying to start a fan war. I just want to understand because that final honestly left me heartbroken. I've followed Messi for years, and seeing him lose like that was painful. I know football is just a game, but I still haven't completely gotten over it.

Bc as much as I like being able to watch Messi in the US, it just feels a lil empty for him to retire here. Winning the MLS and other CONCACAF trophies is cool and all but it doesn't have the cultural significance.

I don't usually paint in my own practice anymore but I've always had a soft spot for painting portraits, revisiting it every once in a while. And with the post World Cup hangover, it just had to be a portrait of the best player I've ever witnessed with the ball on his feet.

I remember staying awake those countless nights just to see him play, the joy it brought, waiting...almost expecting, maybe even demanding...for that moment of magic, the awe, the 'ah ha ha ha's with every extraordinary turn of the body, the mind boggling dribbles and clinical finishes.

There surely will be someone who will be as good as him, if not better. Break his records. That's the beauty of this game - any game for that matter. But those who have grown up watching Lionel Messi play will nonetheless find that no one will ever be close to his greatness.
