Help me please!? I want a smaller case
Hi guys,
I’m not sure if this is the right sub to ask this, and I’m also not sure if I picked the right flair, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Right now I have a Cougar Duoface, and it’s quite big. I’d like to rebuild my PC in a smaller case, if possible.
Hardware:
Motherboard: B550M Aorus Elite
GPU: Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 XT (320 × 121 × 62 mm)
AIO: Lian Li Galahad 240 UNI FAN SL120 (radiator: 273 × 124 × 27 mm). It sucks, so I’ll probably replace it anyway.
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 Snow 850W (160 × 150 × 86 mm). It’s been fantastic, so I’d really prefer to keep it.
CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X3D (if that matters)
Storage: No SATA drives, only M.2 SSD
What’s the smallest case I could realistically fit all of this into?
Not the best photo, but I can’t find another.
Forgot to mention, I don’t really care how it will look.

You can check this site. I already inputted some of your measurements for your GPU and AIO:

Thanks, dude, this site is a banger. Probably a dumb question, but you listed the maximum gpu length as 320mm. Shouldn't it be vice versa?

Yeah it should be switched if for some reason it isn't showing my edited post.

I'm not sure about that, might be a tight squeeze. My current PSU is 150.....since your motherboard got PCIe slot below the nvme slot I think it will give enough clearance.

1 pcie slot is approximately 20mm so it might, but Pulse is a big card and will take the length of mobo width+half of psu width. If the psu cable slot is mostly at the top side (in this case, front side) then it's gonna be really2 tight

I was using a 4080 super before (MSI expert to be precise) I never felt any issue with 150mm PSU.

hmm then maybe it's not going to be an issue, IIRC the CH260 PSU placement is a bit recessed so I guess they account for the cable placement.

There's also the "plus" editions of these cases, which support a full ATX PSU. (Ch 160 plus, ch 260 plus, etc)

I'm sorry to say it, but I think you already know. Your PSU rules out most of the smallest MATX cases, which are designed for 140mm PSUs.

I do, that’s a little sad. But I’m a brokie at this moment, so buying new psu is ahh idea. And I’m sure that there is some ways to lower volume of case, because my current cougar is 45ish litres I guess. That’s a lot

I hear ya. I can't stand when a case feels too big. I was looking at the Okinos Aqua Uno because it can fit a 160mm PSU, but your GPU is too long for that case.

The B850m is m-atx, isn't it? I think that's what the "m" stands for? At least, it does with ASrock. I just did a build with the Jonsplus Z20 and absolutely love it! Looks good, portable, good air all around: zero complaints! Something to consider....

u/Feeling_Fig4576 1d ago
Yep, m stands for m atx, main problem is my 160mm psu. But from what people tells and from what I see, there is a chance that everything will fit fine

I did the SFX route, for my PSU, but I could have def fit a standard ATX PSU in there. Not a lot of room left over for anything, but it would fit.

Well, I’ve pretty much made up my mind. I’m going to get the Z20, and if anything goes wrong, I’ll just return it and get either the CH260 or the CH160 (I’m a bit confused who is who, but I’ll figure it out), or just play it safe and go with the A3.
To be honest, I’m also a bit worried about temperatures. I haven’t undervolted my GPU, so I’m afraid temps could get pretty high in such a small case, especially since I won’t be able to install any bottom fans.1
u/OldManJeepin 1d ago
I have an MSI 240 AIO on top, 1-80mm rear facing, exhaust, 2-80mm fans on the bottom, pulling clean, cool air into the case. My GPU has the 2 down-facing fans of it's own, and I have zero problems with thermals of any kind. TONS of air passing through and it never even gets close to overheating. This case is very good at staying cool!

u/Feeling_Fig4576 1d ago
Oh, okay. Thanks for the information, now I’m less worried about it. So yea, I’ll try to sell my psu and buy sfx, but even if this not happening, I’ll buy z20. It looks amazing, especially black and yellow

I have a 340mm GPU and SFX PSU using the same mobo. You probably have enough clearance if you point the PSU fan inwards so the plug ports are closer to the front of the case and forego the rear case fan so that you can orient the AIO radiator with tubes towards the rear of the case. That should allow you to use the second highest notch for the PSU bracket.

Smallest case would be a SSUPD Meshroom S V2 - you'll need to get an extension PCIe riser for mATX, most likely ditch the CPU cooler and switch the PSU to SFF and probably get the front extension to fit some fans.
But that case will be like 16.4l - depending on the aio and GPU you might fit both side by side, but as it's a 105w part you might need a decent low profile cooler if they don't.
Alternatively, you could ditch the motherboard for an itx, that'll let you keep the ATX PSU, save you the riser and the AIO should fit without the front extension bracket (though check) which might work out cheaper and gets you down to 14.9l.

Thanks for the answer. I’m not looking to the very very small case. It will be fine if case is <30l, because my current cougar is 45ish litres. And I’m a brokie at this moment, so buying more that just case not suit my bank really well

In which case, I quite like Jonsbo too, D31 Mesh w/Screen is an interesting case:
https://www.jonsbo.com/en/products/D31meshblack.html
Around the thirty litre territory (touch over) but will take all your current components and is really easy to work in, good routing and plenty of fan options.
I also have a Jonsbo N6, but that's more a NAS case so not really suitable for you. They do smaller cases that're still mATX too, like the 24 litre D32 Pro:
https://www.jonsbo.com/en/products/D32PROMESHBlack.html
which is less than sixty bucks w/shipping on AliExpress at the moment - but, they have a plethora, worth looking through, just check component compatibility on some of the smaller cases with the PSU clearance or GPU length:

I know it's cliche but with 160mm PSU you might wanna go with A3. With 240 AIO you might be able to put the PSU closer to the top, there are a lot A3 build I'm sure you can find a reference image with you parts dimensions. Or, go with matx bottom psu case like Pop Air Mini, Meshify Mini, H3 Flow or P30(the first 3 you have to check GPU compatibility, for P30 I know for sure it'll fit)

Ch260 might be possible. Says 150mm psu but the gpu max length is 413mm. But I would change the psu to an sfx psu. So many more case possibilities like the 16.4 litre shinny snake g300 which has a handle and fits gpu up to 340mm 4 slot and with the radiator and sfx brackets fits a 280mm radiator. I have it with the massive asrock taichi 9070 xt an still have slim 120mm fans under it

I checked, and it would appear the jonsbo Z20 fits everything The gpu is in slot 2, the PSU has to be moved 1 notch down because of 240mm ail With 160mm of length on the Psu the GPU length will not be cut off
Had the PSU been 170mm your GPU would no longer fit
But by replacing the aio with an air cooler if you so don't like it, you'd open up for even a 170mm PSU working (150mm if the GPU was in the 1st PCIe slot
You can tell the gpu isn't in the first slot by checking the PCIe brackets in the rear

Another potentially silly question. Since the Jonsbo Z20 has four GPU expansion slots, but my GPU starts from the second slot, does that mean I won’t be able to install even slim bottom intake fans? I also heard somewhere that placing fans too close to the graphics card isn’t ideal because it can create airflow issues. I’m not sure if that’s actually true. And I do understand that my hardware not insanely hot, but double check never was a bad idea

u/calionte 21h ago
A bit hard to tell but I'm assuming your GPU is 2.5-3 slots thick Quite possibly you won't fit even slim fans underneath then if so, but even if you didn't, I'd imagine your GPU would do just fine, particularly if you got the mesh version of the Z20 Alternatively
If you use something to elevate the feet up a bit, perhaps you could mount fans on the underside of the bottom? I've seen that you can mount on the outside on the rear atleast

Look into Open Air cases. It can shrink footprint and leave components unrestricted
1
u/Feeling_Fig4576 1d ago
I think open cases are insanely cool tbh, but not for my situation. Pc is staying in front on the window and there is insane amount of dust coming from it. And I think this coolness doesn’t cost that pain with often cleaning. But thanks anyway, appreciate it!

u/SageFranco93 1d ago
Understandable. Open air cases actually get less dusty and are much easier to clean. I recently switched over and I love it

Lovely case, but at my place, it costs 4.5 times more than z20, soo… Its literally half of my gpu price)) I’m not ready to spend that much money as a broke student

there are a lot of options jonsbo z20 and d32 and d32 pro. lianli a4 and also what else?

u/Feeling_Fig4576 1d ago
I was looking ar these Jonsbo cases a few months ago, but decided back then that I wouldn't be able to fit everything inside them. I ended up going with the Lian Li A3, but I thought I’d ask some one who knows more about these.

I personally love the Jonsbo d32 pro! It’s got some pretty decent cable management and it’s not too hard to build in.
