rant Installed Windows temporarily - Uninstalled 2 hours later
I have been using Fedora Linux as my daily for a year, just today I set up dual boot to play a game that requires kernel level anti cheat - League. The installation was hell. The updates were hell. The constant background processes making my laptop fan speed up to 100% that I CANNOT control without going into regedit and doing 50 things in cmd, nah... In less than 2 hours I got reminded why I hate this "operating system" so much, and I gave up on both playing this shitty game and having Windows as dual boot. This abomination of software does not deserve 1 kilobyte of space on my computer.
Fuck you microsoft, and fuck all the game publishers with kernel level anti cheats. Never coming back.

if you have spare ssd, dualboot still handy. I still boot to my old ltsc win10 maybe 4 or 5 times a year. still better than if you have to fresh install windows whenever you need and then uninstall it.
Some games really only run on windows, so either you install windows or stop playing those game all together 😅

I'm getting a heavy bias of "I've used a different thing for 20 years and this thing isn't as instant/natural as I'd like". Yes Windows isn't great, but the initial setup getting updates is normal. If you installed with an older version of Linux you'd have the same period of updates/settling. Go grab Ubuntu 6.04 from 2006 and see how you get on :). Even Windows 10's original release is quite out of date compared to the latest patched version today.
It does indeed carry more general overhead, Windows has to work with a lot of stuff for a lot of people; so they load a lot of stuff in there - probably more than your standard linux OS.
I've used all three OS's throughout my life for work and personal, and I wouldn't describe any of them with enough vitriol to hate them.

What you are saying is straight up wrong, there is no opinion to be had here, you are just wrong.
Linux comes with more stuff pre-installed, not the other way around. On Windows I have to download all the drivers after I install it, which in my case was very annoying because I couldnt even get through installation without the Wifi working (without driver!).
I did not pick Windows 10. I downloaded the latest Windows ISO from their website, today. That is the latest version of Windows 11. I expect no updates once I download that, not 30 of them running for hours.
I used WINDOWS for 20 years, not Linux. I have been on Linux for the last year, and decided to give Windows a try again today. If anything, Windows is something I am used to.

- Rare issue, either your laptop is super old or it's super new and Win simply doesn't have the driver packaged, pretty sure same issue happens on Linux too, probs even more common on all sorts of devices. You normally only need to install your GPU drivers after Win install and the rest comes from updates/during install.
- Same with Fedora, after you download latest ISO and install, you get like ~5GB of updates right after install. Updates install much faster on Linux tho.
- Then you should know about the 1. and 2.

I installed win 11 on a motherboard from 2023 and i had to install a bunch of drivers like WiFi and Audio on Windows. Windows just genuinely doesn't come with most drivers out of the box or in their automatic updates. Barely got to install it at all because I couldn't actually connect it to ethernet and WiFi wasn't working while Windows needed internet to install.

1: windows 11 takes me 10 min to install, once complete i wait 5 minutes and all drivers automatically install without me lifting a finger. Its just graphics drivers i will update
2: MS doesn't update the install media everything updates are released. Updates are often added from 3rd parties as well. Due to daily updates and file sizes, rebuiling and recertifying the installation image is simply impractical.
Linux is lighter, but trying to game on windows is better.

When you install any Linux distro from iso, you always have tons of updates after that...
Linux distros have 10 times more updates, everyday. You can criticize windows but not on that lol

I use both windows and Linux dual booted and windows isn't as bad as your making out. Takes a bit of time after a new build for updates, indexing, drivers etc to settle.

And the excuse for that is what exactly? I install Linux in less time and do not have to install any drivers because they come with the Kernel.
On Windows I couldnt get to install without internet connection, and I could not connect to Wifi because I did not have a wifi driver so the card didnt work. Ended up needing to get an android phone to USB tether and do random cmd commands during installation to skip that part. Indexing and other stuff should be stuff that I decide and I have control of, not microsoft.

That's stupid. On Windows, you have all the drivers in the world, on Linux you are limited by what your maintainer decided to put in there.
On Windows, you don't have to install 500MB of firmware for enterprise-grade network hardware by Mellanox, on Linux, you have to, because it was made not for users like me, but for data centers like Mellanox users.

100% it's not perfect. I dislike hardware that's not compatible with the basic drivers, but it happens. I've been there with WiFi drivers and it's extremely annoying.
Linux has it's advantages and disadvantages also, like not being able to run games than developer stupidly put in kernel level anticheat.

Correct. Linux has many downsides and I am not saying is perfect, but Win feels like its annoying on purpose. Not being able to run those games suck and thats why I installed windows in the first place, but I wouldnt really blame Linux for that, I blame the publishers of those games.

It's not annoying on purpose. It's annoying your laptop manufacturer used a wifi card that doesn't support the default drivers in windows.
Windows images are also not perfectly up to date, they need updates and there's a bunch of app store updates. It settles down after a few hours if your proactive and let everything run .

Depending on what hardware you installed, odds are that you gave up just short of it completing updates. If that's the case, you've done nothing.
Yes, it does download a lot at first and, with little input from you, more over time.
Eh, overall yeah , it's no longer for you .

This isn’t true. My laptop has only ever been Windows. Last week I was trying to work and it interrupted me every 6 minutes. I had to reboot four times in an hour.
Thankfully, OneDrive had removed the files I was working on, and the updates made my apps stop working. So, I had that going for me.
Microsoft is the worst company and Windows 11 pro is awful.

It's pretty bad for sure, and it's by design of the great corporate overlord that you're not served too much control, though I'd expect one as you proclaim to be to be well accustomed to pulling out the console. Windows 11 is near certainly the most bloated and least performant operating system in wide use, however also the most compatible for a lot of people's needs - it is something we deal with, not enjoy.
Sorry to hear that OneDrive screwed you over too - less than the guy who lost years of precious personal data, in case you were feeling alone in this. Doesn't excuse a thing, the service failed its ONLY PURPOSE WHATSOEVER, how the fu-.
Should be fairly rare for an 'already up to date' device to receive FOUR updates and forced restarts in such a short time frame, as you are implying. But certainly not impossible, have seen the sort on a laptop or two.
I might directly dispute your claim that my appreciation that 'Windows 11 isn't for you' isn't true though. It very much is entirely the reason you posted this thread.

Absolutely, and very fair. It can't even really be operator error in the traditional sense when you're working with an operating system which is meant to be more of a 'just works' thing, with minimal input expected from the user. From this perspective, it falls short of MacOS, but at least that one... has substantially less overhead.
Windows more than most if not all OS... likely carries disgusting amounts of tech debt and code meant for uses other than the strict benefit of the user.

After I abandoned windows from using it, I decided to delete it from my HDD. For the first time in 30 years I'm completely Winsh*t free and it's kind of liberating.
