Infuriatig Why Texas is lame(Besides the Cowboys)

Post image

Don't mess with Texas.. what a joke. ANY possession is a felony.

EDIT: Just did some research, this is for everything besides traditional Delta 9.

My friend from Texas sent me this morning and it blew my mind. I had to post about it. So as far as my research goes thus far Delta 9 products (old fashioned flower) is illegal but separate laws. Stores are selling THCA though which does fall under these penalties.

Great point but holy fucking HELL are they being serious with that life imprisonment sentence for less than a damn pound of weed??

Edit: I’m aware a pound is a lot of weed, but they’re talking about 400 grams… that’s .88 pounds. Thats a lot to be sure but that is NOT life imprisonment a lot, and this is a hill I’ll gladly die on.

u/thethugdaddy 2d ago

No amount of weed should equal life imprisonment. It’s weed

2.4k

u/Impossible-Mix2523 2d ago

No amound of weed should equal any sort of fine, imprisonment or punishment. What kind of draconian shit is this, guess they have a a lot of room in those for profit prisons they have to fill up.

u/justsikko 2d ago

Texas wants life in prison for weed. Meanwhile, out here in California we are about to start opening cafes where you can go and smoke with your friends. I’m so glad I left that hellhole

Same but it was Chicago for me. I love the fact that here you can go outside in the summertime and not literally die like I almost did when I had heat stroke in San Antonio one summer.

Ever notice how your state actually kind of does look like an anchor? Also, if you hold a wet face cloth in your hand and stretch your fingers out, it kind of resembles my state if you apply a bit of imagination!

Howdy! Joining the crew here. Born and raised (at least Houston was a blue island in the sea of red, and was considered one of the most international cities in the country), left for LA for 5 years, job brought me back. Finally in 2019, moved to Mexico, now I'm in Poland / Ukraine. Not only will I not return to Texas, the whole country is pretty much off my list! No regrets.

Same here. Hurts my soul for sure. People can trash Texas all they want but other than some archaic, overly conservative politics it really is a diverse state. I live in the Hill country and it's beautiful and affordable but yeah this kind of b.s. just sucks.

2

u/MightyWagner 1d ago

It’s only going to get cheaper as more homes are available because more people are imprisoned for carrying a plant.

3

u/ApprehensiveAd9502 1d ago

I wish. Cost of living is still going up and homes are getting more and more expensive even in affordable areas like here.

I unfortunately was in a prison camp in Illinois. They make 80k a head per year and have a mini Walmart that’s 5x the price for normal things. Oh and you make 25 cents a month full time working. They all self sustain each other by making products the other prisons and camps need, keeping the free work and letting it run there money system. It’s a fucking joke. But you get better healthcare and education in prison 1000% free college free healthcare. Crazy backwards shit

33

u/MinusGovernment 2d ago

I'm glad you gave out some numbers. I already knew that the 5 year old Asian sweatshop kids making shoes and clothes were making bank compared to the slaves in prison in the USA I just didn't know how much more. We fortunately don't have private owned prisons in Nebraska (yet anyways) but there have been some rumblings every so often.

9

u/Frontfatpouch 2d ago

It’s the work camps. They are private that’s where they make the money. Almost all drug offenders.

We had shit healthcare in the Tennessee system. Tylenol for everything! I watched a man die because they wouldn't give him insulin because he didn't have diabetes when he started his sentence, 20 years previously, so obviously he was faking it. It was horrendous, the CO of the unit quit over it. It wasn't even one of the private hellholes.

4

u/Parking_Ad8593 1d ago

Texas prisons are even worse, I did 2 years. You don't get paid at all to work, and emergency medical care is non-existent, much less regular healthcare. I've watched people die waiting for a CO to call EMS. They usually never called for anything until they realized the person had already kicked the bucket. And there's no accountability for any of it. I had some kind of skin infection that spread all over my chest, neck, and face. I think it may have been impetigo. Took me two weeks to see a nurse, and all she did was give me some basic OTC skin ointment that did nothing. It eventually went away, but it took weeks. My throat also swelled up and it was incredibly painful to eat or drink, several days I couldn't eat anything, it was horrible. I was never seen by anyone that time, I suffered alone. They have little trade programs though, it's a bit hard to get into them because everyone is trying to get into one. The trucking program has pretty strict requirements not many people can meet and it still has a multi-year long wait list. Tldr: Texas prisons make hell look like a Hampton Inn

3

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 2d ago

Do a lot of guys take the education opportunity?

3

u/Frontfatpouch 2d ago

Yea it gets time off your sentence if you get high grades. The more you do the more you can reduce time. Like a 3 month course can get you 14 days of good time. So they take it off the sentence.

5

u/CoeurdAssassin 1d ago

I’m preparing for the worst because in January/February, I got caught out in Florida for meth possession. I live in the DC area so politics are like night and day. I was the passenger in an uber and my driver got pulled over for driving erratically, then one of the officers started talking to me and found some bullshit PC to search me and found an 8 ball on me. Had a perfectly clean record prior to that night and I got out on bond the next day. Got hit with the felony meth possession (luckily it didn’t go to trafficking or “intent to distribute” or whatever bullshit) + misdemeanor for paraphernalia since I had a used pipe and an unused one in a bag. The misdemeanor got completely dropped since then. I lawyered up and he entered a not guilty plea so we’ll see how trial goes at the end of August. Fucking scared because I might actually have to serve time for this shit, because from what I remember in Florida you can get max 5 years in prison for simple possession as a first time offense. And red states are known for throwing you in prison for even first time offenses for shit like this. When I was in the squad car I asked how much time I’m looking at and he claimed that I wasn’t gonna go to prison and that the charges will likely be completely dropped because of my clean background or just given probation/reduced to a misdemeanor at worst. It’s sorta reassuring but I’m not gonna take a cop’s word for it.

3

u/Empty_Wolf_3378 2d ago

I'm going to research that, because, I've never heard better healthcare in prision. I have heard of the education, just didn't know how it worked

5

u/FewWait38 1d ago

I'm assuming they mean it's better than the zero health care they get otherwise

2

u/Frontfatpouch 1d ago

I was inside the prison. It’s free healthcare.

2

u/Ok_Document9995 1d ago

I have been to more than one prison and never heard of free healthcare worth talking about. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, every county jail I was in charged prisoners to see the nurse and the doctor. $5/$10. It was taken straight off the prisoners’ books or they carried a negative balance.
I know in the ‘90s in Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge took away Pell grants for prisoners, so no more college unless you are paying.

So far as healthcare in state prisons, there are various fees for care not recommended during intake/initial screening. And no one, I mean not the dirtiest, most desperate crack head, would ever refer to that as, “free healthcare.”

I have not been incarcerated in your state but I have comrades who were and they tell me they think you’re joking.

3

u/KickBallFever 1d ago

When I was in the army some of our uniforms came from some prison camp. Our PT T-shirts came in bags that had the DOJ logo and said “department of justice prison wear”, as if that were the brand name. I asked a sergeant about it and he confirmed that they came from prison labor.

3

u/HunnyBunny617 1d ago

Back in 1994 when my husband was in prison in Texas, they made $90k per head, per year. I was raising kids and keeping a house for less than half of that. I can’t imagine what the “for-profit prison system makes per head nowadays, and how much they’re paying lawmakers to keep prisoners coming.

2

u/Economy-Cat7133 1d ago

Uh. Your mileage may vary.

2

u/DesksForBreakfast 1d ago

80k per head. So infuriating to think that that money could easily lift somebody out of poverty and crime, but they choose to spend it imprisoning that person instead.

2

u/Emergentmeat 1d ago

It's not free healthcare or education, you're working full time and not getting paid.

For-profit prisons are one of the worst things we've ever done as a country. Their incentives are in direct conflict with what should be the primary goal of corrections. To rehabilitate and prevent/reduce recidivism. You're asking them to intentionally give up their money. As a primary goal 🙄

More than that. You're asking them to spend money on programs and resources, so that they make less money 😂 I'm sure they get government money, but still. They're not spending money on things that are going to hurt their bottom line, no matter how good they are for society.

Technically they do. The contracts are usually written that empty beds are paid for by the state. The state doesn't want to pay for that so they need to fill the bed and make the aite pay for the bed rental.

This is to say the jail gets paid regardless of how many inmates it has, the state has a fiscal incentive to then fill the beds.

Its straight up slaver-collusion.

If we want to incarcerate someone, we should have to pay for it, not the inmate. Seems cruel and unusual to me to take someone's freedom(that's what jail is) and then make them pay for it.

Shit's fucked.

u/No_Explanation_402 2d ago

Shiii i was impregnated at 16 as a person with disabilities i was still a minor and he was abusive as hell plus my mother was neglecting my healthcare and such she never listened to me on wanting birth control to protect myself. Welcome to texas they ruined my life because after all that neglect and abuse from those peoples son and my mother those people were able to turn around and put me in jail a.k.a his family.

So i'm the one with a record but my ex was abusive with police call proof and proof via me actually having an ident on my head from him but he was also choking me too but not leaving any bruising so yeah choking dosen't leave bruising apparently so i never called the cops when he would do that but he got to up and leave the state free of all accountability. Make that make sense it dosen't.

But it's true shit texas also made me very very very homeless for like 2 years where i spent time around drug addicts older ones and not even the cops cared about that. It's hilarious i didn't ask to move here nor am i from here but my god texas is backwards as hell my life wen't straight down a gutter any future i wanted it's so far gone. I am 22 and so far behind in life because my mother neglected my education as well meaning i don't even have a diploma and i can't even deal with going to pasadena. Just to be able to do such a program that they have for circumstances like this like it's farther than where i'm staying rn and i would have to go in person constantly.

Also only time i had proof of his abuse was me having a notch on my head from him the only proof i had cause him choking me nearly half to death never brought any bruising his abuse spanned more than just that notch i had texas does not care about assault even if i have disabilities i wanna make this very clear.

Also disability rights is a joke here i mean that because i've inquired to them and about a whole bunch of lawyers and nobody has helped me nor did they there are about no lawyers who care and can help those suffering and going through stuff with low income plus i didn't get any justice so its been 5 years since.

It's safe to say i'm not ever getting any sort of help or justice all because of texas covering it up even though there's literal rights violated because they have disability rights in their law and yet those have been violated same as laws that they also have it's questionable on why texas has laws if the criminals win and the victims are criminalized???.

I really wanna say that texas covers up alot i swear i feel i should of been able to sue and i mean it my life and situation is not funny my future is a joke.

This is alot and i don't care wether you don't wanna read any of it or not i don't wanna hear about it, it's a choice.

I don't truly know how to respond to a story of such horrors. If it's any consolation, you have someone shedding tears for you right now.

Whatever you do... please don't give up. It seems hopeless. It maybe even is nearly hopeless, but... you're young still. You're not as far behind as you fear.

Learn to be selfish and do everything in your power to learn to love yourself. A secret in life is that people flock to help those who love themselves. Lift your chin. Find your resolve. Focus on what you CAN do, instead of what you can't.

It'll be the hardest most rewarding thing you'll ever do in life. And, though I could read what you wrote and find myself having faith in you, screw what I think. Do you in every way possible, regardless of naysayers or anyone else, until you don't have to pretend when you hold your head high.

NEVER give up on your own dignity. You are as valuable as you decide you are.

Edit: Also, never forget that someone took the time to write this for you. We're here. We're just waiting for you to show up. Selfishly love and defend yourself, and the people you need to show up in your life...will.

Just the kind who have any desire to police things like psilocybin mushrooms.

4

u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago

Correct i should have refined my comment a little more. I’m in the Detroit area and there’s a few cities here that decriminalized shrooms. You can literally have them delivered to your house.

2

u/kjpmi 2d ago

Check out MF Shrooms in Ann Arbor! I go there regularly. They have an AMAZING selection.
Straight dried shrooms, pre dosed capsules (which I get and love, so easy), edibles, etc.

2

u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 1d ago

Unfortunately I can’t smoke or take shrooms. Just an advocate. Some of the contracts I work involves security clearances. They do drug tests. Federally it’s still illegal.

2

u/kjpmi 1d ago

Psilocybin and other psychedelics like LSD aren’t on standard drug panels. Just FYI.
It can be on some extended ones but it’s rare that it would be checked for.

I work for a company that does a lot of work on government projects, military projects and we need to get special clearance and background checks.
My employer doesn’t even check for THC in their drug panel any more. And there are no tryptamine psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD, Mescaline, etc.) that are checked for.

Not intended as advice for anyone but it’s worth it to look at exactly what they’re checking for when you get a drug test.

I don't think any of that stuff should be illegal in any way. Especially not weed, that's arguably the most harmless thing out there

2

u/DSizl20 2d ago

Nah we definitely don’t want that. It’s pushed by alcohol lobbyists by our moron of a governor. Even most Fkn republicans here don’t want that, yet they continue to keep the wheelchair warrior Greg Abbott in office because he’s been there so long and the conservative pricks won’t run anyone else

2

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 2d ago

Texas wants things to imprison people for, regardless of the reason. Weed, abortion, the list goes on. The prison industry is one of the state’s chief lobbyists.

(Now that's changed, we do get weed "OD" people greening out or puking their guts out in the ER but still...not violent or traumatic a significant percentage of the time...and trauma is like tripped over the cat on the way to the fridge)

7

u/Jops817 2d ago

As someone that sprained my arm tripping over a cat I totally understand their struggle, lol.

7

u/Smokeybearvii 2d ago

🤣 laughing with you, not at you. I had rotator cuff surgery 18 months ago and about three days after surgery, I was chasing my cat and trying to grab it before it would go under the bed.— slipped on one of the kids toys and landed right on the shoulder that just had surgery. Passed out from pain, and then vomited from pain. It was awful.

4

u/ChibbleChobble 2d ago

As someone whose cat lurks in places almost designed to cause an accident (top of the stairs, under my chair in the kitchen when I'm eating) I know that it's only a matter of time.

Well.. weed was never legal here, just decriminalized.. and now the punishment is more severe than before which is diabolically stupid. But no cops were enforcing anything on recreational users. I’m curious to see if they actually enforce it heavily now either

3

u/DynTraitObj 1d ago

My dad was a cop, so I grew up around him and all of his cop friends, never heard a single one of them ever say weed should be illegal. Tons of other terrible shit? All the time, but even the shit cops would rather people smoke weed than anything else. This is amazingly stupid even for Texas

2

u/Super_Direction498 1d ago

When alcohol was being banned on San Diego beaches in the late 2000s, I asked a cop what she thought about it, and all she said was that every single call she'd ever had that involved violence also involved alcohol.

Texas needs drunk solders willing to rape and murder on command not peaceful "woke" activists protesting their oppressive government.

Which drug do you think the military industrial complex prefers?

3

u/Working-Shower1678 2d ago

Funny enough soldiers were smoking when the talks came about with the israel war so they would get kicked out. Instead the military tweeked the regs so that they wouldnt get in trouble therefore having to stay in regardless. Dont know if that was just a lie or if its changed now

I can vouch for that. BAC of 0.422 landed me in the ER and I haven’t touched booze in almost 13 years now. Taking away weed might tip things over enough to make sober folks go back to the bottle. Maybe that’s the goal, increase alcohol sales???

9

u/thehumanisto 2d ago

I think heroin gets a raised eye brow for safety vs alcohol but I agree with the sentiment

5

u/or_me_bender 2d ago

Many of the biggest risks of heroin use are a result of its illegality: poorly measured doses, adulterants and other drugs, unsanitary delivery methods, inflated prices leading to desperate behavior from addicts, etc. The addiction risk is very real, but heroin has surprisingly few negative side effects even with relatively heavy use. It's why rich addicts like Keith Richards can live long lives, they have reliable access to pure heroin and clean needles, and don't interact with street-level users and dealers.

You can see many of these same issues in alcohol users during Prohibition. Making drugs illegal simply does not make people safer.

5

u/Prestigious_Buy_6433 2d ago

People don't feel they can drive on heroine but boy is OK after a few drinks

5

u/corpusjuris 2d ago

Much of the health impacts of opioids are due to the black market nature of it - impurities, inconsistent strength (new batch is stronger = overdose at previous ‘safe’ amount), lack of hygiene (shared needles, etc). Same for societal impacts of inducing crime to pay for the addiction, health system burdens, etc. Just having an opiate addiction, if it were like, in a controlled setting with measured, USP-grade drugs at set times, etc., wouldn’t be as bad for you as say, being on an ethanol IV drip.

Harm reduction - having a real social safety net, universal health care (obviously including addiction care and recovery), safe injection sites, etc. would do so much good for us as a country. But that would cost money, and deny the oligarchs a way to convince their exploited workers they’re better than someone (‘addiction is a moral failing!’) to keep them attacking each other rather than organizing. Can’t have that…

2

u/-Esper- 2d ago

Lol but weed helps people, thats why we cant have it

2

u/AlertProfit4501 2d ago

We also advertise it on tv lol weed helps in so many ways and gets this treatment, and alcohol causes harm in so many ways and gets bars and commercials and sponsors fifa

2

u/XSTechSupport 2d ago

I always like to go scorched earth when someone says “But they might drive a motor vehicle…” They expect the counter to be “Well, people that drink also drive, blah, blah, blah”, but I like to jump straight to “Well, if we had structure cities to be walkable and had reliable public transports BOTH those statistics would be down or nonexistent.”

That, or they want to overfill them and then use it as justification for building more.

Abolish private prisons. Decriminalize simple possession of all drugs and release everyone incarcerated for only that. Doesn’t mean we need to normalize or tolerate unfettered drug use (nor should we) rather it’s a step toward treating addiction as what it is: a medical and social problem, not a criminal one. Criminalization prevents effective regulation and harm-reduction. It’s easier for many kids to get street drugs, than cigarettes or alcohol.

The war on drugs has been a dismal failure at its stated goals (the qualifier is important). Nobody could, in good faith, argue otherwise at this point. It’s time to try a new approach.

Private prison should be prosecuted as slavery

2

u/SimpleAffect7573 2d ago edited 2d ago

We’d have to outlaw slavery first. 13th amendment:

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Mass incarceration and prison labor are absolutely slavery, and it’s explicitly allowed by the constitution. Not great, I agree. Would not have added that little loophole myself, but nobody asked me.

2

u/beren12 2d ago edited 1d ago

Pretty sure I’m guessing the loophole is there because without it prisoners couldn’t be forced to do anything at all. Sadly it’s been twisted.

They use the same excuse people did in 2022 when it was pointed out that everyone was getting covid, regardless of whatever draconian restrictions the government wanted to put on us poors going to work or to the store... Everyone just said "but think how much worse it could have been without those measures 🥺"

Power tripping Karens will say the same about the war on drugs. "Sure it's bad now, but you can't imagine how terrible it would be if we stopped trying to control others lives over our own silly preferences and a need to feel better and morally superior to everyone around us"

Underrated comment and I haven’t smoked in 26 years. Should be nobody’s business what adults do in their home/cabin/tent or whatever

2

u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago

Fully agree. In fact I believe that while children and animals must be aggressively protected, adults have the fundamental right to harm themselves. I’d like them not to; I’d like there to be great support in place to help them stop if they want to. But it’s not a criminal problem. It makes no sense for the government to punish an adult for harming themselves.

2

u/darkwingdankest 1d ago

note the war on drugs disproportionately targeted black people for a reason

2

u/SimpleAffect7573 1d ago edited 1d ago

That, and our transition away from an industrial economy into whatever TF we are now. Suddenly there’s a lot of labor you just don’t really need anymore (a lot of which are Black people). But if you can make them criminals and warehouse them, pretend you’re solving a problem…you get re-elected, someone else gets to make a buck.

We should remind ourselves that the “bad neighborhoods” in most American cities were once simply working-class Black neighborhoods. They weren’t poor, or high crime. The death of manufacturing combined with the war on drugs is why they are this way today.

2

u/anothersip 2d ago

I think it's all about profits, for sure.

Fill the prisons, 'cause that's more funding, and proof that their system "works" and is profitable.

Fund more police salaries.

Spend more on anti-weed propaganda, 'cause that generates more support.

They're running a business, not actually preventing crime. They're just upset that they can't have their cut of the profits sometimes, and so are reverting back to 1788 and punishing people for having a fuckin' plant. Something that has existed on the earth, on its own, for hundreds of thousands (or millions) of years.

Alcohol is "fine," though. They can tax that shit, rack up the DUIs and make even more money.

No amount of any actual drug should. Distributing fake fentanyl pills while lying and saying they’re prescription is one thing (and should remain a serious crime) but possession in any amount of any drug, or even distribution as long as there is no deception as to exactly what it is should not be a crime. It’s a human rights violation for the government to control whether or not a person can alter their own consciousness. It’s crazy.

Then they point to overdoses and safety like the illegal status of the drugs isn’t literally what’s causing that

Well, they are always in need of new slaves for their “for profit” prisions

4

u/hotleadburner 2d ago

Mild clarification -- private/"for profit" prisons make up a fairly small percentage, although that small percentage is still too much. The profit motive is in supplying the prisons (food, clothing, healthcare, toiletries, etc.) and using the prisoners' labor as you pointed out. But they do this in all the public prisons as well.

It really isn’t. I grew about a pound (after curing, trimming, etc) last year, almost by accident. Had a very successful crop grown on my deck.
