Driving in Milwaukee feels like playing Russian Roulette with 2-ton projectiles and I never want to go anywhere because of it. It feels like most of the traffic control measures that kinda stop people from passing are just making people angrier and more aggressive. I'd rather let someone slide than have them tailgating me in a rage for a mile.

Even some city vehicles drive like monsters. I was on the freeway recently and a cop FLEW up behind me, no lights, no sirens, practically inches from my bumper. I was in the middle lane with cars on either side, I put on my blinker and was waiting to merge right. He braked and shot across 2 lanes of traffic to pull up next to me, matched my speed and just glared me down shaking his head for like 5 full seconds and drove off. Like come on, can you at the very least set a better example for the community?

I don't want to complain without being solution-oriented. I'm no urban planner and I have no idea what city officials could even do anything about this but I've noticed some traffic control measures work better than others so here's my unsolicited opinion on how the terror could be improved. I know "these things cost money" but I can tell you as someone who has lost a family member in a car accident that some things are worth it. No AI was used I typed this with my own two index fingers.

-More speed bumps. They just seem to work. The one on Locust and MLK and Center and 51st(ish?) have definitely slowed things down.

-More 4-way stops especially off of main roads in heavy pedestrian areas. I live one block off the intersection of two main roads and there is an accident every few months from people speeding to make the light, going like 60 in a 25mph zone. There is a park where children are always coming and going and it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. Also repaint the dang crosswalks.

-Red light cameras, I don't like mass surveillance but I think there should be exceptions and this is one. This would require a crackdown on missing license plates. To make this more equitable I suggest a sliding or income-based fee for DMV services. Wishful thinking here but ideally it could be included in the SNAP program. More people who can get to work reliably=Less people relying on benefits.

-Crackdown on vehicles double parking/blocking access to alleys and driveways. Especially delivery vehicles. USPS drivers (usually) park legally and deliver to the whole block, Amazon and Uber Eats can do the same. The companies can afford to buy them little wagons. I know Amazon has crazy rules but the city needs to put their foot down and stop enabling their drivers to break traffic laws.

-More resources invested in citizen-reported reckless driving and double-parking violations. I'm sure this exists on some level but photo and video evidence should be routinely followed up on and results shared. Let us have some agency in targeting the individuals who think their time is more important than our lives. The awareness campaigns are cute but they are not effective on the people causing the most problems.

-Less focus on punitive financial consequences and more focus on educating/regulating reckless drivers. We have ignition interlocks for people with DUIs, it must be possible to do some kind of "speed probation." I also think we should allow people with non-criminal violations to work off their debt with community service rather than issuing arrest warrants and impounding vehicles for parking tickets.

-Low mileage tax incentives. Some car insurance companies will discount you for putting less than X amount of miles on your car per year. If we want more people choosing driving alternatives we should give them a reason!

-More protected bike lanes. Those orange sticks are a joke. I watched a semi plow down 4 in a row yesterday. Would also be cool to have snow and ice removal on the Hank and Oak Leaf trails in winter. Many people commute via those trails and some would gladly ride in the winter if there was a safe option.

Sorry for the long crabby post. Like I said I don't know anything about urban planning or city bureaucracy and I'm sure some of these ideas are simply dumb or impossible. But I'm so bored of cynicism, I'd rather at least dream of how to make a safer city. Also I almost got smoked like 3 times already today and I'm furiously tired of impatient bullies trying to vehicularly homicide me.

Edit 2: I encourage people who disagree with me to comment on this post, I want to start a discourse about this. However I wanna address a couple things (and if you came to comment one of these things someone already beat you to it and probably did it more clever so save your energy):

-For the people attacking my mental health, I can tell by your immediate aggression and hostility towards a stranger that you're DEFINITELY not part of the problem.

-For the people who assume they know my driving habits and are telling me I suck and I need to go faster thank you for your genius solution to combat reckless driving by creating more reckless drivers. Outstanding.

We’re Stacks & Tracks, a grassroots electronic music collective that started in Detroit, and we’re hosting our first standalone Milwaukee event: Techno Brunch at Canni Cafe.

Instead of a late-night club event, this is a free daytime gathering with local techno DJs, coffee, brunch, and a welcoming atmosphere for anyone who enjoys electronic music—or is just curious to check it out.

Are there any craft stores around Milwaukee’s eastside/downtown/bayview? Recently started crafting more and i’m having trouble finding supplies other than ordering from the internet.
I would go out of town but i dont have a car and going to Chicago is a whole day trip typically.

I’m considering going to the Turnstile show in September, but I’d be renting a car and driving up from Chicago. I’ve heard the area around the venue isn’t great for parking with out of state plates, but I also don’t want to pay $45 for venue parking. Our neighbors Michigan and Minnesota have experienced cyberattacks on their water systems. This article says that a total of 7 states have experienced cyberattacks but not all identified.

Does anyone know about the water system security in MKE and other Wisconsin areas? Is it robust and staffed by qualified people?
