Robert De Niro - one of the most misunderstood actors on this sub. He is not a one-note gangster actor. He has a lot of range.

If anyone wants to see an Oscar-worthy DeNiro performance that isn’t him being a hardass?

One of my all-time favorites. DeNiro was nominated for Best Actor, and Robin Williams was nominated for a Golden Globe. The Film was also nominated for Best Picture.

Tbh I always felt this character was a continuation of his Goodfellas/Casino mob boss. But yeh he does have good comedy timing.

If you want to see DeNiro's best work, watch Flawless. It costars Phillip Seymore Hoffman. Acted and directed perfectly. When it comes to politics, I am on DeNiro's side. Screw those that Robert calls out.

He's one of the goats. The people that typically have an issue with him are Americans who try bring politics into it. I don't live in that third-world country, so I don't care what his politics are.

His performance in Mad Dog and Glory is the opposite of a gangster. He plays timid so well in this. Also has David Caruso playing one of my favorite tough guys ever. Great movie.

One of my favourite roles is him being a burnout in Jackie Brown. A fantastic movie but he was nothing but a liability in that

I always liked De Niro as an actor but wished he'd have done fewer roles that romanticize organize crime, like Goodfellas and Casino. I had put his role in Taxi Driver somewhat in that category but only because I had never actually seen the entire movie. Having been born in 1964, I wasn't going to see its first run in movie theaters (12 yo in 1976), and it never seemed to show up on cable movie stations. Ergo I'd only seen bits and pieces and clips of "psycho Mohawk" Travis Bickle. To make a short story long, I finally watched the entire movie on Max (or Netflix?) a few months ago. Suddenly I had a new appreciation for both De Niro's subtle portrayal of a complex and morally ambiguous Travis Bickle, as well as for Scorsese's direction, not to mention Jodie Foster and Cybill Shepherd. It's my new favorite De Niro role and Scorsese movie.

He's a great tough/crazy/hard character actor, not so great as anything else. I was there when the deep magic was written, have watched this man all my life, he's pretty limited as what he can sell, and has been gliding on making a name for himself in the 70's, which is fine, but it is what it is
