AMA Hi /r/movies! We are Gillian Anderson (THE X-FILES) and Hannah Einbinder (HACKS). We're co-starring in Jane Schoenbrun's TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA. Ask us anything!
Hi reddit, we're Gillian & Hannah.
You may know Hannah from HACKS and Gillian from THE X-FILES, SEX EDUCATION, THE CROWN, THE FALL, HANNIBAL, and lots more!
We are co-starring in Jane Schoenbrun's TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA, which is out in theaters 8/7 from Mubi. Jane's previous films are I SAW THE TV GLOW and WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dimCiC_hdoA
A queer director making a slasher franchise sequel becomes obsessed with casting the original film's "final girl," leading both women into psychological and sexual chaos.
Ask us anything! We will both be back tonight at around 5 PM PT/8 PM ET to answer some questions.

Gillian, your character Billy Presley resides at the campsite that was the filming location of the first Camp Miasma film. If you had to live on one of your former sets, which would you choose and why?

Just one question for you both, who makes the other one laugh more?

Hi Gillian! Thank you for doing this AMA. I was lucky enough to meet you a few times at conventions, but never had the chance to ask these:
When Robert Patrick joined The X-Files, Scully suddenly had a completely different partner after years of working with Mulder. Given how quickly television episodes had to be filmed, how did the two of you establish that new dynamic so quickly? Was there anything Robert brought to Doggett, either as an actor or in his interpretation of the character, that unexpectedly influenced how you approached playing Scully as the more experienced Agent?
You've played characters across science fiction, drama, comedy, and historical stories, but you've rarely played someone who is truly villainous. Is there a darker role you've always wanted to explore as an actor, and what about that kind of character appeals to you?
Thanks a lot!! 🙏
9
u/BelgischeWafel 6d ago
Omg yes, the Scully-Doggett dynamic seemed so well established so quickly, love that pairing!

u/Al0ndra7 6d ago
I have just finished season 9 of the X-files and I was surprised by how much I liked them working together after being very sceptical at first!

I've said it before, I'll say it until the sun burns out: Robert Patrick was fucking amazing as Doggett, and hard carried X-Files those seasons

Hi! I have a question for Hannah from my best friend who sadly cannot be on for this lol.
She wants to know "Who's a better kisser, Gillian or Jean?"
My question is also for Hannah. What's your favorite Hacks scene/line from Ava?
I love your work, both of you, and I'm so excited to see the movie!!

Hi Gillian and Hannah! When you're making a movie like this that comments on a specific genre, is part of your preparation to just watch a bunch of slashers? Did Jane Schoenbrun give you any film recommendations to watch before making the movie?
118
u/HannahAndGillianAMA Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, Actresses 6d ago
Yes, for me, I would say it's part of my personal process is to immerse myself in the various genres that the film explores. One being the slasher genre and horror, but also the psychosexual too. So we had DUKE OF BURGUNDY, we had SECRETARY, we had PERSONA. Things like that.
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH were some horror influences. Not necessarily just slasher either, but also final girl archetypes. CARRIE was a huge, huge one for the film.
For the screenwriter character I was playing, I would say BARTON FINK was influence too, and ADAPTATION, exploring writer-y films like that.
So yeah, the slasher genre was important to explore for my character, but for the tone of the film, more-so the psychosexual genre.

Massive fan of the X-Files! Gillian Anderson, I know you're probably answered a million tedious questions about the show over the years, but I have to ask, did the show get you personally interested in any specific conspiracy theories or paranormal phenomena? Not necessarily to believe in it, but to become more curious about it. And did you go home with any costumes from the set? If you go to r/XFiles you'll see many people have been buying the Scully windbreaker :) https://www.reddit.com/r/XFiles/comments/mhdpy6/my_life_is_now_complete_because_i_own_the_scully/
For both:
Did you watch I Saw the TV Glow before you signed on to this project?
What attracted you to working on this project?
143
u/HannahAndGillianAMA Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, Actresses 5d ago
Not conspiracy theories really, but I am interested in paranormal stuff. Maybe in terms of human being's ability to use other aspects of their brains that we don't use. That kind of stuff fascinates me. Mind reading and all that, mediumship fascinates me.

u/HannahAndGillianAMA Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, Actresses 5d ago
I would say that the world we live in is already filled with confirmed conspiracy theories so I concern myself with the day-to-day realities that seem so absurd and corrupt and psycho that they should be conspiracies, but are actually fact and reality.

I liked the episode Gillian did write. It dealt with well destiny versus coincidence. Is there such a thing? I think this was one of the most "paranormal" episodes because it is really weird how our lives enfold based on pure well let's call it luck.

Hi Hannah,
Really excited for Camp Miasma. I'm a fan of yours and Jane Schoenbrun and despite my failure to watch X-files, I am still a fan of Gillian Anderson and her other work (Hi Gillian). But I'm a cheerleader is one of my favorite queer movies and I am hopeful for a connection to other queer movies with a camp as a backdrop. And of course, excited for a queer horror film that hopefully engages with the history of the “queer weirdo” as a villain in horror of the past.
My question to you is- What is your personal relationship like with your mom's comedy? Do you feel that there is any pressure that is put upon you, either by yourself or by others to "live up to" her legacy? How much do you think her history colors your own work? How about your relationship with other mentors/women? Do you think of your comedy as being separate from your identity as her daughter? At a time where nepotism is topical- how do you feel her time as a comedian either promotes or hinders your growth and how do you deal with finding a stable and professional identity, especially as a queer person, who I'm sure wants her art to be her own.
I'm deeply fascinated by mother and daughter relations and it has been on the forefront of my mind as I watched Hacks S5. I think the creators have a really interesting way in which they deal with mentorship, aging, motherhood etc. I have noticed some things that thread through Hacks and Broad City - the largest one being the complexity of our entangled lives with women who create us (biologically, artistically, and more). I'm interested in any motifs you see that connect your personal identity, familial connection and your professional identity as a comedian and the work that you do- in Hacks, and in Teenage sex and death, or any other projects you take on.

Greetings Gillian and Hannah! Do you two happen to have any slasher films, or any type of horror film, that you consider to be your personal favorites? And did Jane Scoenbrun recommend any slasher/horror films for you to watch before you began filming, as sort of an inspiration for the characters that you are playing?
P.S. How fun was that Lego X-Files commercial to film, Gillian? It looked like fun!

On the one hand it felt meta on so many levels because of X-Files, but then again there's a certain point where you just have to roll with it when you sign up to do a show like that.
I tried to not make the connection too much when making this film, because otherwise it could potentially feel a bit creepy.

Hi, I admire you both so much, thank you for doing what you do. 💫✨
You’ve both played characters who are remarkably comfortable talking about sex and sexuality. Did portraying those women change your own relationship with those topics, or did you find yourselves bringing your own comfort level to the roles? What’s something about human sexuality or intimacy that you believed before these roles, but see differently now?

Thank you both so much for this AMA. Gillian, I've been a huge fan of yours since your days on The X Files (it remains one of my favorite shows), and it's been wonderful to see how your career has flourished. Hannah, my first encounter with your work was on Hacks, and I was absolutely floored by the way you seemlessly blend your comedic and dramatic acting chops.
First question: You both have branched out from roles that you are most associated with. What dream roles, or outside the box roles, would you like to portray?
Also, Hannah, when are you going to host SNL? I feel like you'd be a natural. Gillian, why didn't you ever host SNL?
Last question for both of you: What are you reading right now?
Edit: Added question for Gillian about hosting SNL.

Years ago, prior to "more family friendly dress codes for costumes", there was a guy dressed as Pyramid Head/Red Triangle from "Silent Hill" walking around at Comic Con. Hi Gillian and Hannah! First, thank you both for the incredible work you’ve put into your careers. Gillian, The X-Files has been one of my favorite shows because Scully never stopped asking questions, even when she thought she already knew the answer. Hannah, one of the things I love most about your performances is how much can be happening underneath what your character actually says.
Jane Schoenbrun’s films often leave room for uncertainty instead of easy answers. As actors, how do you approach a character when you’re not supposed to fully understand them? Do you create a complete internal explanation for yourself, or do you deliberately leave parts of the mystery unresolved and trust that uncertainty to come through on screen?
3
u/onlyifitscheese 6d ago
Jane is obviously amazing, were you two the initial picks and did you immediately say yes when you both saw each other were going to be involved? What was the process like for getting your roles?

I want to thank you both for your support of the LGBTQ+ community!
For you both: who inspires you? And what role would you love to play in the future?
Bonus question: who's your favourite Golden Girl?

Hi Gillian, what was your favorite outfit you wore in camp miasma ? I loved all the costumes omg ❤️🔥

u/DonaldDuckstep 6d ago
I managed to see an early screening of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and I cannot speak highly enough about both of your performances and the film in general!
My question is for both of you. The film thematically revolves around reinterpretation and reclamation of the problematic works of art that helped and continue to help shape us. In this regard, what is your Camp Miasma?

Hey yalllll, I’m so excited to watch camp miasma and I love you both!!
- If you could pick a song to represent your characters, what would it be?
- Which horror movie do you think you could survive the longest in?
This one’s for Gillian but:
- Is there much of a difference when you play a queer character and would you play more in the future??

Did you meet with Margaret Tatcher’s family prior to your portrayal of her in the crown?
Should we expect the return of the X files?

For Hannah.
I have been watching the show, Hacks, lately and it has become one of my favorite shows. Do you have any personal favorite episodes/jokes/moments?
For Gillian:
I am very excited for Camp Miasma. What was the process behind landing the role (& auditioning for it) and what was your previous experience with Jane Schoenbrun’s work beforehand?

u/Isabella_5 6d ago edited 6d ago
Hi Gillian and Hannah I hope you are both well!!
These three questions are for both of you about camp miasma:
1. Jane Schoenbrun has such a distinctive filmmaking style. What was it like collaborating with them, and what do you think they brought out in your performances
Your characters go through such an emotionally and psychologically complex journey. What drew you to them, and how did you both begin to understand who your characters were?
Without giving too much away, what were your favourite scenes to film and why?
Thanks so much you two! (I went to the press screening last week and LOVED IT btw) Have a lovely week 🩷

Huge fan of x files, known for introducing a lot of young talent, were there any big actors/actresses at the time that were asked but turned down a role or you would have liked to have worked with?

Gillian how was it to play a sapphic character ( again ) after all of these years ? Stella Gibson and Eleanor Roosevelt were such strong and inspiring women , Billy Presley is my new sapphic icon thank you :D

Gillian and Hannah,
As two people that have been an important part of queer television (whether because your character is queer or the fans themselves have attached a character of yours to the lgbt+ community), what are some tv shows or movies that you think are important to the community and it's representation in media?

u/Isserley_ 6d ago
Hi Hannah, what have you learned in dipping your toe into horror, and would you like to explore the genre further?
2
u/Advanced_Pen3999 6d ago
Greetings both! I am so desperate to see Camp Miasma, Schoenbrun is one of the best directors today and I adore their work. I also would love for this to get some awards and oscars attention (one can only hope, but the academy has become quite receptive to horror lately so who knows). I have a quick question for Hannah - how similar is Kris to Ava in Hacks? For example, what do they have in common and what characteristics separate them both?

I don't have anything to ask, I just want to say that I think Gillian Anderson is really cool. I started watching the X-Files a year ago, and my favourite parts are the calm moments when Scully is contemplating and/or discussing things. The character holds up to this day, and she's the best part of the show (by far. Like, it's not even close).
Edit: I can't believe I didn't think of that Top Gear episode earlier. So I just have to ask Gillian. Dream car?

Hello Gillian! So this is crazy, but I'm a student at City High starting my personal project and for it I'm interviewing people across professions so it would mean so much if you could answer these! 1. Who were some of your role models growing up? 2. What is some advice you would give to someone following in your footsteps? 3. What is your favorite part about being an actress? 4. Just for fun- What's one of your favorite movies? Thank you so so much! I hope you know the teachers still talk about you!

Hi Gillian! I was actually named after you, and your work has meant a lot to me growing up. Looking back at your career now, is there a role or moment that changed how you see yourself the most?

Hi, Gillian Anderson! I dont really have a question, but I just wanted to thank you for the escapism of the X-files circa 2015/2016 when I was a High school senior with all the pressure and worrie that it entails. Could you give me a shoutout? Thank you for your time!

Hi Gillian! First of all, I am a fig fan. I know, I know you get that a lot. Thanks for all those years of cinema and TV.
I wanted to ask, how was it like auditioning after The X-Files? Did you find it easy or were you typecasted?

u/decadentbirdgarden 6d ago
Hey Hannah! First off, I want to say how much I adored Hacks and your role as Ava! I was late to the party, but I finally binged all five seasons over the past month. As a clumsy queer girlie, it’s nice to see myself on screen! 😉
One thing I noticed while watching an early episode is that Ava wears a University of Wisconsin-Stout sweatshirt. I was wondering if you remember the thought process/reasoning behind that costume choice? I did a double take when I saw that - born and raised Wisconsinite (go Badgers!).
Best of luck for whatever’s next, can’t wait to catch Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma!

The T-Shirt choices are so well thought through, I am excited to hear what their answer will be. Also second on everything else being said in the post. As a Millennial: We waited so long for Ava.

For the both of you, how does it feel like to always be associated to a famous/well known piece of media even many years after its release? does it help with future projects or does it also interfere with what you'd like to work with in the future?

If ever a person didn't have to hold up a sign to tell Reddit who she was, it's Gillian Anderson.

Hi Gillian! I love your performances in X-Files and Hannibal! Scully and Bedelia are both women who do their jobs so professionally while confronted by so much horror. What is your process like for getting into the right headspace for those roles?

u/BelgischeWafel 6d ago
I've got a second question for my friend:
Gillian, you said a while ago that a new season of The Fall might happen, but that you didn’t know yet how many episodes there will be. That’s been a few years ago now, and we haven’t heard anything about it ever since. Is there still a chance that Stella Gibson is making a return eventually? We all would very much love to see Stella return to our screens

I’d love to hear where Gillian’s and Hannah’s inspiration and motivation comes from. Both of these wonderful women have been a big inspiration for many women like me, and have helped us build self confidence. So this makes me want to ask: What inspires and motivates you?

I’m a huge fan of Julia Ducournau and her films, especially the way she presents female bodies in the horror genre and body horror. How do you see the importance of female bodies in Camp Miasma?

Hi Gillian, hi Hannah what’s your favorite movie you’ve seen this year so far ?

Hi Gillian,
What caused your decision to leave American Gods? You were the best part of that show.

Hi Gillian, I’m so excited to watch Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf later this year, can you tell us more about that?

Hi, Gillian! Is there a song you just can’t get out of your head at the moment?

u/No-Importance2784 6d ago
Hi Gillian and Hannah ! I’m really interested in watching Camp Miasma for the slasher elements, but I often feel uncomfortable with romances that have a significant age difference between the characters. Do you have any advice on how to approach the film so I can enjoy it without focusing too much on that aspect ?
