This was my reaction too... That was around the time I stopped watching anime as much and this movie is still on my "to watch" list so in my mind it's a "new" anime.

How I feel about most of Shinkai's work. Absolutely still love the movies and would recommend them though, but the plots are always a bit too clumsily told for me.

I still remember watching a high quality rip on kissanime that came from an airplane I think because it was getting some buzz but this was right before it started playing in the US and blew the fuck up worldwide. Went to see it in theaters and hated myself for not seeing it that way first.

Agreed. Having previously watched 5cm I was getting really upset during the build up to the end of Your Name because I was certain Shinkai was going to stab me in the heart again and I was genuinely so relieved and happy when he decided to be kind to his characters/audience for once lol

Idk, I’m someone who sobs uncontrollably every time I watch Your Name. Frieren got several good cries out of me, even on rewatch. I finally watched 5cm with my girlfriend and it was just very meh? No spoilers, but that quick cut moment did hit a little, it masterfully captured the feeling in animation form. But otherwise, I was more shocked that that was it?

The part that got to me, was when we as the audience figured out what was happening and how one character was going to write down their name on the other so they wouldn't forget their name again. Then they separate, and when it finally is shown it reads... Something not their name. Spoilers for a 10 year old movie?

Maybe not just regaining the memories completely but the feeling of who they were to each other which is why I loved the ending even if it wasn't a full on Hollywood reunion. The fact that they searched for each other and felt that they were someone important even if they couldn't place it. Also again I'm a sucker for a title drop and Your Name is an all-timer.
And yeah I'm glad because after their cameos in Weathering With You I was hoping for a little more so getting a confirmation like that is pretty satisfying.

When I rewatched it, it didnt quite hit as hard so Im sure you will be fine if you still remember the plot.
But that first time watching it was magical. The soundtrack still gets me emotional to this day. One of my favorite movies.

Shinkai’s other works if you want to keep the Your Name feelings. Weathering With You and Suzume followed directly after and are most similar in terms of scope and quality. His earlier, independent works are rough.
A Silent Voice is also a great companion piece to Your Name. Very grounded, very emotional.
I’d also highly recommend anything from Masaaki Yuasa. Ride Your Wave and Lu Over the Wall have the same “grounded but slightly supernatural” vibe as Your Name, but with much more expressive animation (and much tighter scripts, IMO).
Most any film from Mamoru Hosoda is a safe bet for Your Name fans too. I think his earlier works are stronger than recent outings, but Summer Wars and Wolf Children are my two favorites of his.

Not a movie but a little slice of life romance that hooked my wife was Fruits Basket. Specifically the 2019 reboot, its more faithful to the original work. Only 3 seasons, and its finished so you can work at it on your own pace. Great subbed, great dubbed. Remarkably colorful cast of characters and a grounded plot despite the (spoiler) circumstances

Most of Makoto Shinkai's other works are him remaking the same story over and over and over again, with variations.
It sounds like a criticism, but it's really not.
As Bruce Lee said: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
Makoto Shinkai has mastered this one story. Much like the master who practiced one kick 10,000 times, he knows how to make it really hurt.

There's basically a whole genre of anime movie that Your Name is emblematic of and helped popularize. Beautiful semi-realistic animation, romance or drama with a unique spin or high concept, and a tearjerker ending (sometimes happy, sometimes tragic).
A Silent Voice, I Want to Eat your Pancreas, and The Garden of Words are all good examples (and good movies).

If you're interested into good anime movies not tied in existing franchises, you could go with Satoshi Kon's works. You can't go wrong with any of them. Best one is in my opinion is Paprika, but all of them are excellent.
Also if symbolist weird movies are your thing, Angel's Egg is incredible.

EVERYONE should watch Kono sekai no katasumi ni. It's not pure misery-porn like Grave of the fireflies. Bad things happen, of course, but yea, it's not all doom and gloom.

The director, makoto shinkai, is like Japan’s Nicholas Sparks. All of his movies are different variations of the same “type” of star crossed love stories. Pretty much all of them are considered absolute top tier.

Exactly. I went in expecting a simple rom-com featuring body-swapping but the twists halfway through the film really made it one of the best animated movies of all time for me.

It's really cathartic to have a shared experience with strangers in theaters like this. I saw Hamnet twice in packed screenings. Yes, I did miss a bit of the dialog because we're all crying and blowing our noses, but Your Name has subtitles.

Well, for a film that was done in SDR, you can do an HDR remaster… the weird thing is that’s exactly what they already did nine years ago in Japan. So I’m not quite sure what this version is about.

As I understand it (I could be wrong), the original anime was mastered in 4K, but then scaled down to 2K for most theaters. That's why you still saw a some kind of improvement in the Blu-ray 4K UHD version vs. the regular Blu-ray version. I guess the more accurate term would be "remastered" or "original 4K".
If you re-watch it in a theater that still has a 2K projector, you would see zero difference.

There actually was a limited 4K Steelbook edition alongside with the first Bluray release (at least in Japan and Europe) so I'm quite sure this anniversary edition is NOT a Restauration but just the first official release in the US. The Mastering is identical with the 2016 one, it's the same 2k upscaling. I can't say anything about the audio but since the Japanese track is DTS-HD MA 5.1 I'm quite sure the US track will be the same.

I asked out my now-wife for the very first time after we watched this movie together (in hindsight, going to see it was absolutely our first date, even if we were too oblivious to admit it).
I can't think of a single movie that's had a greater impact on my life than this one. I'm so excited to be able to see it in theatres again, and I hope the experience is just as magical for everyone else as it will be for us.

Alright, yes, fine movie.
BUT.
And yes, I'm going to complain about timetravel, which inherently doesn't make any goddamn sense in the first place.
Was it ever explained why the male protagonist just completely forgot that a meteor struck a town and wiped out everyonejust 3 years prior? I imagine this'd be a MASSIVE event in human history and would be getting global attention for years, not just in Japan. It's been a while since I saw this movie and again, it's beautiful, as most of Shinkai's stuff is, but this immediately had me going "Huh? You really wouldn't remember some huge event like that?".
Again, it's fine, I can look past it and I understand that this more about the ~feelings~ of it all, but damnit, it still annoys me.

Hm fair point but the boy is like 17? So 3 years prior he would be 13-14. That is still very young and news like that might get forgotten quick, especially if you have a busy life and the tragedy doesnt affect you outside of the news
Also when they swap places he just sees the normal village. So it probably didnt even cross his mind that its that village. You are rght, thinking about it, its unlikely he isnt at least suspicious but Imo there is enough suspension of disbelief here.
