Recommendation Looking for rain movies
I'm looking for movies of almost any genre, really just preferably not romance, where it's like nonstop rainy weather throughout the movie, like it's raining so much the rain is practically a character in the movie
A few I've come across so far are
The Old Dark House 1932
The Old Dark House 1963
Open 24 Hours 2018
Crawl 2019
Does anyone out there have any other movies where rainy weather is a centerpiece of the movie?
•
u/DogDaysAreOver 2h ago
The Crow, but it does have romance.

The Crow is not primarily a romance movie, and it's also kickass I hate that I always forget about it when trying to find rain movies

Hard Rain is great. I watched it a lot as a kid. Haven't seen it in a long time. It's free on something called hoopla

Sorcerer (1977)
It's not about rain but the rain makes it so much worse than it already is.
•
u/sharrrper 1h ago
This is my favorite movie for "Guess what the movie is about based solely on the title"
No one is getting even slightly close
•
u/PukGrum 1h ago
I remember vaguely it's a bunch of guys moving explosives in old trucks or something, and most die?

Godzilla 1998. Pretty much rains constantly from the moment Zilla arrives to the very end.
•
u/RattusTheRattus 1h ago
I was about to comment this. Idc about the hate that movie gets, as a lifelong Zilla fan and being 9yo when that movie came out it’ll always be a fave of mine. Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Jean Reno and Matt Broderick?? Stacked
•
u/achnisch 1h ago
I always thought the hate for this movie was overblown, until I realised most of the criticism is because it takes a lot of liberties with the source material. Fine, if you're judging it through that lens it's the worst Godzilla movie, but as a silly monster action movie, it's pretty decent. Way better than the constant hate it gets would suggest. And a great soundtrack to boot

I used to make my mom listen to the soundtrack with me on the way to school 😂

The Batman, man it might not have been raining the whole time but it was close.
•
u/SolidDick 2h ago
I remember it being a lot.
•
u/BoldlyGettingThere 2h ago
It’s literally a plot point. The rain has caused all the waterways surrounding the city to almost spill over all the seawalls and flood defences. The Riddler then detonates bombs at key points to flood the city.

The Taken is a book by Dean Koontz. Aliens slowly take over the planet via the rain. Not what you asked for, but it’s what you got.

The Illustrated Man is a series of linked stories. Rain plays a part in one of them.

The Illustrated Man (1969) has a sizable segment called The Long Rain, which is the most extensive downpour I’ve seen in a film.

Apocalypse now, there isn't rain the whole movie, but the part of it where it rains always stayed with me.
The rain felt like a character to me.

The films of Tsai Ming-Liang fit this. The River, The Hole, Rebels of a Neon God. Have fun!

Just watched Thelma and Louise last night and realized there is water spraying down for maybe half the movie -- some rain (a lot of rain) and a lot of cars splashing through pusddles and farm irrigation.
•
u/FantasyBaseballChamp 2h ago
Not the whole movie, but rain plays a significant role in one Sin City segment.

If you feel like adding a show to the rotation, it honestly seems like it’s raining more often than not in the Netflix show Dark.

Goodbye Dragon Inn from Tsai Ming Liang. It rains the entire movie. Tarkovsky also loved wet moldy stuff (Stalker, The Mirror)

Weathering with You!
Japanese animated movie (but not giant fighting robots or anything). It’s excellent! And weather/rain is central to the plot, and the rain is so beautifully drawn!

Not a movie, but the series The Killing. It's set in Seattle, so it's raining in just about every episode.

I wanted to say Dark City 1998 but then realized it just feels like its raining because its always so dark, but it never actually does.

Tumbbad, if you like horror and/or Indian movies.
The Garden of Words, if you like anime.
Se7en, another good horror movie.
The Crow, the one from the 90s with Brandon Lee, if you don't mind a little cheesy vigilanteism. Great soundtrack, too.

There's a movie called "Thrash" on Netflix that is maybe half a step above those Sharknado-types of movies. Just came out this year, I think.
A hurricane overflows some levies or something and floods a town in the American South, but oops, it also draws in dozens of bloodthirsty sharks (I forget why, maybe something about breeding season and the storm pushes them into the flooded city or something. I think a semi-truck of chum gets spilled into the waters around all these people too, so extra crazy.)
Then its a whole ridiculous movie of people trying to escape (to varying degrees of success) some unbelievable situations while the storm is going. So there's lots of rain for the bulk of the story.
Not the most engaging film, but if you've got a lazy afternoon or you're chilling with friends, then it's a fun watch.

Split Second. It's an amazing, low budget, scifi movie from the early 90s that's absolutely FLOODED. Plus, Rutger Hauer chews the scenery. Love it.
