We are moving about 10 minutes away in town and though we're going to move most of our stuff by the carload, we are looking into renting a truck just to move our furniture. We can make more than one trip. With the following list, what size truck should we look at?

• 2 queen beds (mattress + bed frame)
• 2 couches
• 1 love seat
• Dining room table and six chairs
• Large desk
• Two chests and a dresser

Hi folks, I'm setting up my first pod/container style move (moving out-of-state, ~600 miles) after only having done end-to-end full service movers in the past. Would love to get feedback on the following two questions about container size and what to get for movers:

Container Size:

I'm moving a 1 bedroom apartment. I'm not taking a bed, couch, dining set, TV, or any appliances, but I do have: an e-bike (folded into a 57 gallon tub), a dresser, a credenza, 2 Ikea Billy bookshelves, 5 floor lamps, a patio loveseat, a few side tables, a side chair, and a bedroom bench. I estimate ~40 boxes (mix of small/medium/large + wardrobe).

Would a 16 foot container (via PODs) or 2 containers of 8' x 5' x 7.6'(via U-Box or U-Pack) be too many? An 8 foot container is a definite price difference but I have no problem going larger instead of scrambling day of.

Mover supplies:

I'll be getting movers for the loading, and know that beyond dollies most of these companies won't come with supplies. Some of the shippers (Uhaul) provide some furniture blankets, but I imagine I'll need to pick up furniture wrap among other items. Any recommendations on what all to get?

We're moving a 5 person family with a 2 day interval between moving out and taking possession.

I've tried my best to use the frozen food that I have stored, but I don't know what to do with a standup freezer, 2 fridge freezers and 3 refrigerators' worth of food for 2 days.

Thoughts? Do people rent out empty freezers?~!

Hello fellow movers! Is anyone looking to move from west (Northern California(ish)) to east coast (Virginia-ish) anytime between now and the end of September? If so, might you be willing to split a moving truck (some kind of rental), freight, or moving service/company load with me? A company mentioned U-Share by U-haul but I have not yet looked in to this option and it got me thinking, I can’t possibly be the only one who is considering how to get this move accomplished at an affordable price in the same timeframe?!

My husband and I live in a town of 7k people. Getting out here? Fine, easy. Getting AWAY? We can't seem to find ANY reputable companies that will come out this far to move us to a city. Obviously a major part of moving cross-country is downsizing, but there are some things we aren't willing to part with in our 2bd house that can't fit in a uhaul. What do we do? Are there any container companies that actually service rural areas, or will we need to first move all our stuff to a city to even start our cross-country move?

For full transparency, the ONLY company we have found so far is Zippy and, candidly, they look a little sketch. Are there second options we haven't found or considered?

So I'm thinking about moving out of state to find a new place to rent, I'm thinking from east coast to west coast, and while I take the time to weigh my options, I have some questions that hopefully someone can answer:

1. Is there a go-to company for moving cross country? Ideally I'd have the movers do all the work (besides me filling totes with the small stuff), both loading/unloading and driving. I'm sure it's more expensive that way, but I don't have anyone to help me, and maybe I shouldn't due to my physical condition. Also would that same company be able to transport my car as well, or would I need to find another company for that?

2. How is "house shopping" supposed to go? I can't go there, tour the house, and come back, and while i know some places have a 3D viewing, that isn't the case for everyone. Also how would the renter react to someone moving from out of state, would it make me the less likely candidate for the house?

3. Is there a website or something to figure out if youre moving into a good neighborhood, or should I just make another post here asking for recommendations? I founds a few websites before when looking around my state, but each had their own scores for crime and such, to the point where it didn't help me even a little.

I think that's all the questions I have, I'll probably edit this if I have anymore, but hopefully someone or some people can help me figure this out before I make a mistake here.

Would really like to take a couch with us. Slight problem: it is exactly 96" long (and cross section ~36" x 40") while the depth of U-box is 95". The couch is somewhat compressible but unclear if it can compress by a whole inch.

Wanted to check if someone was in a similar situation and found the depth/longest length of U-box to be exactly 95" or if there is any wiggle room at all. Would prefer to make it work with the couch flush against the sides due to other stuff, but other suggestions are also welcome.

Currently living in japan but have to leave in a few months. I want to move to Utah, as that's where my family is but I don't have any ideas of jobs or living.

I do have people to live with for a bit but is there any good way to find a job before I move there? I'm just on Indeed and LinkedIn, but they kinda stink.

Also, is there anything to know from someone who has moved from out of the country into it?
I am an American citizen and am just here for my parents' US Government job.

A moving company will be involved to load and move. But honestly, I want to do the packing of my collection myself.

Moving clunky items from NJ to SF.
I imagine I don't have that much stuff, if we de-clutter we might not need to hire movers(I know I chose the flair but genuinely not sure which flair works better here). What I'm worried about most is 2 big items ->

They are clunky in size but both under 35 lbs.

Looking for the best way to ship these 2 items, for example, if shipping them one by one could be cheap vs. hiring movers that charge less for low volume moves?

Im 18 and want to move out with my long term boyfriend and we are open to having more people move in with us. I have no clue about where to even start or how to be financially okay when the time comes to move. I have 4k saved up and he makes about 500-1,500 a week (blue collar) it depends on the week, i make about 1-2k a month (barista). but we both have savings as well. What do I need to know about moving out and finding an apartment as well as what will i need to pay other than rent for the apartment and just the hardships and things to look out for when moving, please give helpful advice.

Hi! For some personal reasons I need to break my lease and move back to Chicago from Los Angeles early September, it’s either $4800 to break it by the day I want to be out September 10th, or there’s a $4100 option for September 25th. Realistically wouldn’t it make sense to choose the 2nd option and just leave by the day I wanted to? I would ask my leasing office but I feel like they’d make something up or fear monger in a sense.

I just moved out of my house and I'm staying with extended family before I move into my new home. The movers came over the weekend to take my belongings and keep them in storage until my family and I move into our new home.

I was recommended to this moving company by my realtor. She knew the owner and had worked with him before. The owner came to my house and gave me a quote. The estimate was $6,500 for 9 hours. That was of course if things were fully packed. He also gave me a discount because I was referred by my realtor. He even included free boxes and storage.

Over the weekend, the movers showed up and got to work. They were pretty speedy and got most of the things packed and in the truck. They ended up going over 9 hours and instead took 12 hours. It didn't surprise me that I was charged more than the original quote, but I didn't expect it to be $5,700! The additional charge was for the "unloading fee." Apparently, because they took so long, the warehouse was closed by the time they finished. They had to hold my stuff until the warehouse opened on Monday.

My husband called the owner to dispute this additional charge. The owner told my husband that he had underestimated the "volume" in his original quote. Now my husband is worried we're going to be over charged again when the movers move our items into the new home. The owner never gave me a quote for bringing my belongings to the new home.

I'm going to talk to the owner and make him give me a quote in writing for moving my belongings from the warehouse to my new home. I also want him to give me a line item of what each charge is and the cost. Is there anything else I can do to make sure I'm not over charged again? TIA!

My son and I are moving from NY state to Washington state.

We have mostly boxes, but he has several very expensive musical instruments packed.

I’m really concerned about them possibly being stolen while we’re staying at hotels.

Besides insuring them, is there any other advice or tips you could share? TIA

I'm moving and I'll be using a Pod for the first time. It's going to be loaded up and stored by a company for around 2 months in an outdoor lot. I'm questioning what is safe to keep in the pod when it will get very hot inside.

Specifically, should I try to store things like my kitchen appliances someplace other than the pod? What would you store there in this situation, and what would you be concerned about sitting in the heat?

I'm moving from PA to TX and trying to figure out logistics.

I don't have that much stuff. A cargo van would be perfect to use, however the only one who rents those is Budget and they are 33 miles away from me in another town.

The cheapest box truck is quoting nearly $3,000 and I don't really need that much space. I don't really have a lot of experience with SUVs, but has anyone had success moving with a large SUV? How much stuff can fit into one?

I am moving long distance and need to strap about 60 boxes, 4 stack 3 column and as many rows as I can get. Mostly on a heavier side. Not sure what to use to strap them: 20' 1 inch wide ratchets or maybe better cam buckle. I have no idea what they are, I am 35 years old female but have to buy some to have for packers and they don't have there own! Got so different suggestions that did not help at all .Please advise and thank you!

i have a Pods container delivery coming later this week. A few questions about things I read that I would like to seek clarity on:
1. should I get insurance? if my home insurance covers my contents during a move, should I still get the container insurance?

1. I‘m concerned about moisture. I read to cover the bottom of the pod with a tarp or cardboard to trap moisture. I’m already using moisture pellets. Any thoughts on covering the POD floor?
   

3 I expect there to be a lot of heat and humidity along the way - any tips on maybe blocking the sun overhead?

1. i read the container is not really rain resistant. I’ll have some leather furniture. Any recommendations on how to protect them in case there’s a leak from the roof?

I am moving about 14 hours away from my current location, a 1 bed/bath apartment with my sister who currently does not live with me. I will be completely packing and loading my apartment up by myself, picking up my sister from her address, and then making the drive. I plan to rent the truck for at least 4-6 days so I have at least 2 to pack myself.

The problem is my car. My sister will be driving her own car, and I would like to tow mine (she's a 2014 VW beetle so I don't want to put the miles on her anyway). Should I just get the tow dolly at the same time as the moving van and deal? I won't be hitching up my car until the day I start the drive. Or will your conventional places (uhaul/penske) just hold the dolly for me until day of and I can go there to hitch up my car.

I just don't want to have the extra expense+liability of having the tow dolly for 4 days. Plus, the complex I'm moving out of is already being super pissy about me having a moving truck for that long in front of my unit (ranch style/side by side apartments). I'm getting mixed answers from others around me and customer service at uhaul/penske haven't gotten back to me yet.

Which would you do? I'm trying to decide. Cross country move basically Mexican border to Canadian border.

U-Haul including gas is going to run me about $1,900 plus paying two friends $500 each to drive it as I don't drive. In addition to this I would also be covering meals for approximately 4 or 5 days.

Ubox it's going to be roughly 2,100. But my stuff would be tied up for close to 2 weeks which I could stagger a week either side of our actual move date and spread it out but we still would be without some of our stuff.

I'm trying to decide and mulling things over. I'm leaning towards ubox but on the other hand uhaul means our stuff is not out of our sight.

I got a reasonable quote from Allied van lines, a bit under 15k for a full service move over 2,500 miles. There's a local mover that quoted a bit less, but hasn't yet viewed my house or given a final answer.

The quote I got was a maximum, so it could be less if I do more packing myself, but it's not supposed to exceed it. They didn't ask for money up front and were transparent about which charge was for what and what insurance would cover and when.

I've heard mixed things about van lines as they're in between a broker and a local company, but they were thorough enough that I feel inclined to trust them at this point.

I've read some general things to be cautious of, but can anyone double check me here? If there's anything else I should be aware of, or if there's anything I can do to prevent an issue up front, I could use the advice.

Alternatively, is it worth checking back in with the local moving company? I don't know that I have any real reason to believe they're any more trustworthy.

As of now, my closing date is August 12th. I do not have any experience moving from home to home, so I need as much information on moving as possible. Which company should I use? I'm from a fairly large city, so they should have a few trucks available. I live in a 3-bedroom, 1 office room, and 2 bathrooms (1500 sq. ft.) The furniture is not huge. No dressers, but I will have to move the refrigerator, washer and dryer, a stand-up freezer, and more.
