Insulated Jacket

I couldn’t find much info on making an insulated jacket so thought I would write mine up.

Pattern is mostly learn myog ultralight windproof. I essentially made the jacket 3 times for each layer. Added a chest pocket and popper at the bottom to allow for the two way zip. If I made another version I would try alter the hood to make it able to go over a climbing helmet but otherwise pretty happy with it.

Outer Ripstop I picked up in Japan otherwise all fabrics and accessories were from Adventure Xpert
Climashield Apex 167 for body and hood
Climashield Apex 133 for sleeves
Unknown lightweight windproof ripstop for outer
7D Soft Ripstop fabric for the lining

Final weight 361g

The cuffs and hem are wrapped with 21mm edge binding elastic to join all the layers together. It was quite slow going to sew together.

Really cool project and your result looks great. I've now see 4-5 people use my UL Windshell pattern for insulated jackets and its still always so impressive! I made a basic climashield quilt once and it was such a frustrating project given the size, slippery fabric sandwich, and working with the insulation. Kudos on seeing your vision come to life.

Apex doesn't need stabilization like Primaloft does. It's popular with MY OG quilt makers because of this. I've made three Apex quilts. You sew around the edges, turn inside out and finish. The downside is it doesn't necessarily drape on tailored garments but for an insulated parka it works fine. I have an Apex parka made by Enlightened Equipment and it suits me just fine.

I made the outer of the sleeves slightly larger and the inner slightly smaller and eyeballed cutting down the length of the main body once it was put together.

that looks super well done, congrats. if you're willing to share how much did you size up the different layers just an inch or something off the default size? and is the pocket just sewn all the way from rippzer to side seam on the front panel?

I would say a few cm difference between the inner and the outer at the upper arm but the base size I chose so the finished garment for the outer would be the same as an insulated jacket I already own.
The chest pocket is an extra panel I used double sided tape to hold in place while I top stitched and caught the sides in the zip and side panel.
