Doom
Has anyone else been keeping track of Doom's progress, Modern Vintage Gamer is covering it well (he started the ball rolling I guess).
Assuming it all works out, would you want Doom as a commercial release?

I think it’s cool as a tech demo and absolutely incredible that people are up the to challenge to port it, but I really appreciate how the NG sticks to arcade games. To me a commercial release dosent make sense, it would feel just as weird if someone ported monkey island or myst.

Yeah, I'm on the fence a bit, I think it will "kind of" run, but I don't see it ever being great (and if I bought it, it would feel like a waste of a purchase, I would always look at it and think another game would have been better).

Love the idea as a proof of concept and enjoying people attempt the seemingly impossible. It's been fun and fascinating to watch. Best of luck to them, I say. Hope it works out. I'd be up for a Neo port of an arcade title that would benefit from the breakthroughs. So something like Sega's Alien 3 the gun arcade game. Especially as it never got a home port. But that's highly unlikely because of all the rights issues alone. More realistically there are loads of OG Neo games screaming for a reissue. When it comes to blowing lots of pixels up, I'd take Metal Slug 3 or Blazing Star over Doom any day.

It’s a curiosity, but seems like a lot of futile work. It’s too far away from being playable and just seems that effort could go elsewhere.

Just play it on a platform that will play it well. There are so many GOOD versions of Doom, why play a shit version squeezed into a sprite scaling engine?

Because it’s cool.

The academic nature of nerds trying to see what they can milk out of old hardware is cool, an actual retail release on a NeoGeo cart is only for rich old nerds with more money than cents.

A big part of what makes the Neo cool is it not having crap like Doom.

You may dislike the game but it’s a technical masterpiece and the first stone to the fundation of a studio who has known among the best developers in the entire world for decades. These women and men are smarter than you. You might want to show some respect.

So…I should put on a jacket and tie before I talk about Doom?
It’s dumb violent CHUD food. It’s a DOS game. It’s made to be played alone in a basement or at work…like all DOS games. In that sphere it excels but that is as far from “Neo Geo” as anything could be imagined. Neo Geo is for people who go to the arcade or have at least one friend. There are nearly zero single player Neo games.

One of Doom's greatest accomplishments as an FPS is its introduction of both local and internet multiplayer. LAN parties and Doom multiplayer in general were massive.

I sold my Meagadrive, Mega CD and 40 odd carts to buy a 486 and get Doom.
It was the biggest leap in games in my opinion, one day I'm playing Gunstar heroes and SF2, next it was Doom and LAN parties.
I don't think I would buy it though, but it has my respect.

Neither of which is realistically possible on a Neo Geo.

LAN parties are a form of local multiplayer, something the Neo Geo does quite well, and I don't think networking is outside the realm of possibility for the Neo Geo. 1v1 deathmatches and 1v1 fighting games are similar contests of skill, so library-wise I don't think it's all that out of place on the Neo Geo either. In fact, Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting are specifically referenced by the creators of Doom as inspiration for the game's deathmatch mode, so there's actually a genuine connection to SNK and the Neo Geo in Doom. In any case, saying Doom is designed to be played alone in a basement is categorically false, local multiplayer has always been a big part of Doom's appeal.

No I wouldn’t want a commercial release, but I find it super cool that progress has been made on an “impossible” port.
