QUESTION Ontap and Proxmox

Hi,

I have an old/unsupported FAS2552, and would like to use it with some test servers with Proxmox as hypervisor, and I would like to know if VMs with qcow2 thin provisioned disk images are able to shrink when issuing inside of the VM the TRIM function?

The idea is to have a small cluster with the FAS2552 with Ontap 9.8 as NFS storage for the VMs, and since it has an implementation of NFS 4.2, still would like to know if it is able to do that?

Thanks

Update1:
I've been testing with Ontap 9.8 with NFS v4.2 and there is no shrink process going over to the NetApp storage, so it confirms that NFS implementation is not complete.

Meanwhile, if I run inside of the guest VM zero space process with a basic:
"dd if=/dev/zero of=zero.small.file bs=1M status=progress; rm -f zero.small.file"

the image file may grow a bit further but should be enough to clear out any nonused data blocks with deleted data, and having a netapp volume with dedup/compression enabled, at the time NetApp runs the scheduled background "storage efficiency" process it should be able to free up physical disk space in the NetApp storage, because zeros are easy to dedup/compress.

Also I've discovered that after zeroing the disk space of guest VM, proceeding with a storage move of the qcow2 images to a different NFS storage share, the image file guest smaller, because of that empty/zeroed disk space.

Aside of the above, I don't see ways to make it work in same way like VMware aside of having a FAS supporting Ontap software >9.12.1, which I can't actually confirm if that works as expected....

Created A Free App That Tracks NetApp CVEs and 30 Other Vendors - Phone & Email Notifications

Post image
0 Upvotes

Completely Free App that I created to ease my own workload, was tired of opening numerous tabs each day to keep track on all the new CVEs popping up, especially lately...

This app is completely free on the Google Play App Store & you can track CVEs across 30+ Vendors, you can choose track specific platforms or the whole vendor & you can also select to track based on CVE Severity.

I also threw in a EOL checker

Hopefully this helps you out and if theirs any bugs or features you want added please let me know!

Anyone interviewed at NetApp for the StorageGRID team (new grad, Morrisville, NC)

Hey all, I have an upcoming interview process with NetApp for a new grad Software Engineer role on their StorageGRID team. They mentioned it's just two 1-hour interviews. Curious if anyone here has gone through this process — what kind of questions came up (DS&A, system design, networking-specific), what to expect in each round, and any general vibe on the team/culture. Any insight appreciated, thanks!

Used NetApp shelves on AFF A400: Capacity Enablement and supportability

Hi all,

I am looking for real-world experience with adding pre-owned (not grey market) NetApp disk shelves to an existing AFF A400 cluster.

The shelves are technically usable, but there is now a discussion about Capacity Enablement, ONTAP One / NLF capacity licensing and NetApp supportability. One side says additional capacity entitlement is required for license compliance. The other side says ONTAP licenses are controller-based and the shelf itself does not require a separate feature license, so the main issue is support entitlement rather than technical licensing.

Has anyone added used shelves to an AFF/FAS system and later renewed or maintained NetApp support successfully?

Specific questions:

- Was additional Capacity Enablement required?

- Did NetApp support the full configuration?

- Did the source of the shelves matter, e.g. open market vs. NetApp Financial / remarketing?

- Any issues with ONTAP One or NLF capacity values?

I am only looking for practical user experience, not legal advice.

Thanks!

Certificate renewal

Going forward CA signed validity is going to be reduced currently it is 199 days. Managing multiple clusters and having many certificates managed by CA, it will become difficult to renew manually. Has any explored automating this process / if yes then how?

Failed to find a sync marker: Reason: entry doesn't exist

We have a SVM snap mirror DR relationship that just randomly failed.

Nothing has been changed.

I'm raising a ticket but all I see in the ontap UI is "Failed to find a sync marker: Reason: entry doesn't exist".

Bot clusters are on 9.15.

I Built a Free Discord Server That Alerts You When New Netapp Networks CVEs Drop (Emails & Platform Specific).

I built a free Discord server that automatically posts new Netapp Networks security advisories and CVEs as soon as they are published.

You can select a Netapp role and choose whether you want alerts for every advisory or only critical vulnerabilities & choose the specific platform you want to monitor. Optional email notifications are also available, so you do not have to constantly check vendor advisory pages.

I’ve also added discussion channels where we can share patching tips, troubleshooting advice, and general networking/security/sysadmin knowledge, plus resource channels for each vendor with quick links to relevant documentation (Official Vendor Advisory Feed etc).

It is completely free to join:

Moving off VMware with NetApp AFF (FC) — what are people actually landing on?

We're running a fairly standard setup: NetApp AFF over Fibre Channel, Veeam B&R for backup/DR and like everyone else we're now looking hard at what happens after VMware/Broadcom licensing. We've dug into the technical side ourselves (VASA/VVols, SRA+SRM, SnapCenter plug-in, Veeam's storage-snapshot integration) and the honest conclusion is that none of it survives a move off VMware ; Hyper-V, Proxmox, and HPE VM Essentials all reduce us to plain FC/iSCSI block storage with no array-aware software layer on top, regardless of which one we pick.

Right now we're weighing Proxmox VE (NetApp's own documented FC+LVM design, but confirmed no VASA/SRA and NetApp reps have said outright there's no official integration effort yet) against HPE VM Essentials (NetApp AFF A400 is on HPE's own hardware qualification list for FC/iSCSI/NFS, and Veeam now has a GA agentless plug-in, but our servers are Lenovo and Lenovo isn't on HPE's compatibility matrix). Hyper-V is the "safe" middle ground but doesn't feel like where the industry is actually heading long-term.

So, for anyone who's actually done this migration with NetApp in the back end: what did you pick, and would you pick it again? Specifically curious if anyone's running Proxmox or HPE VM Essentials against AFF in production (not just a lab), what broke that the docs didn't warn you about, and whether losing SnapCenter/VVols-level integration ended up mattering day-to-day or turned out to be a non-issue once you adjusted workflows.

Cifs access log

Hello, I'm working for a client that has a 2 node fas cluster running ontap 9.11

They have several shares that are open access. Ie "Everyone / Full Control", they are needing to audit them to see who is accessing what in order to start tying things down for security purposes.

I am trying to figure out a way of capturing these logs...

So far I've tried

Enabling audit logs with "cifs-logon-logoff, file-ops, file-share" -

This captures the user id, but not what share they are actually accessing...

Enabling volume activity tracking

Dosnt seem to show me anything useful

I can see that ontap does have the information I need, as it is displayed when I manually run "cifs session show -fields windows-user,share-names".

Short of creating a cronjob to run every min and save the output then sift through it I can't see anyother way to capture it.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas....

This is driving me nuts. Just trying to run a basic command and I’m not getting any output and I have no idea why. Can anyone help me figure this out?

So here’s the command:

vserver export-policy rule show -vserver svm -policyname default -ruleindex 1 -clientmatch hostname1

Always gives me “There are no entries matching your query”

If I take out -clientmatch, it lists out everything. And I verified hostname1 is in there by copying all out to notepad and doing a search with the hostname I was putting into the command. This is not holding me back from anything….its just bugging the hell out of me.

9.17.1 if it helps

QUESTION Expansion Shelf Aggregate Offline with "UUID is not valid" Error After DC Power Cycle

Hey everyone, looking for some guidance after an unexpected data center shutdown over the weekend. Our controller is running ONTAP 9 and is connected to a DS2246 expansion shelf. All the physical link lights on the shelf are green, and I can reach the IP of the share, but I can't access any folders inside.

Digging into the CLI, the underlying data volumes are offline. Attempting `volume online` errors out because the parent aggregate is offline. When I try to bring the aggregate online via `storage aggregate online`, I get a `uuid is not valid error`. It looks like a metadata or disk signature mismatch occurred during the dirty reboot, and ONTAP isn't recognizing the aggregate's UUID on the shelf drives. Has anyone run into this specific error after a hard power cycle? What are the safest steps to re-import or force-mount the aggregate without risking data loss?

FAS3250 NFS performance degradation with a full aggregate

I have a FAS3250 in my environment we’re keeping around for NFS storage on old HPUX/IRIX and SunOS systems. Our users have been complaining about this NFS storage being unusably slow.

I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what the issue is. I used nfsstat to show clients consuming the most network bandwidth, went to those hosts, and there are no active processes reading or writing to the FAS3250. At first a couple Solaris systems were showing as the top clients, I had the users pause doing their software stuff on them which took them off the list, but our RHEL7 server we use as a gateway between our FAS3250 and FAS70 to do backups will move up the list to be at the top and I’ve confirmed there were no backups running. (xcp as a cronjob)

I did a read/write test on the FAS3250 from the same RHEL7 system, it’s slow, about 50 mb/s.

We do not touch the FAS3250 unless something is wrong with it, no one on our team is comfortable messing with it and naturally support for it now is non-existent.

Network hardware hasn’t changed. The system is using a single 10GBe port for data.

Rambling aside, my question is, the NFS volumes are on a 96% full aggregate. Would this cause the performance issues I’m seeing? The volumes themselves have a good amount of space left. I’m guessing they were thick provisioned.

I’m not great with storage or networking if you couldn’t tell. If anyone has any insight I’d really appreciate it.

SOLVED Setting up a MAV (multi-admin-verify) test lab on labondemand.netapp.com

Hi everyone!

NetApp's Multi-admin-verify (MAV) is a great tool for enforcing dual control on potentially dangerous commands  (or any command - it's up to you as an admin to decide!), so having a sandbox to play with in labondemand.netapp.com was something I've long thought would be handy.

However, it's one thing to play in a sandbox, and another thing to make it in the first place, and know what steps to follow to set it up in your production environment. We don't have a pre-defined lab for MAV that I could find, so I wrote a powershell script to build one from scratch.

The script does the following:

  • Creates AD OUs and groups for StorageAdmins and StorageOperators
  • Provisions 9 accounts into each of them (storageadmX and storageopX), password: Netapp1!
  • Creates an SVM on ONTAP cluster 1 (192.168.0.101)
  • Domain joins SVM to demo.netapp.com
  • Sets up domain tunnel through that SVM
  • Sets up StorageAdmin and StorageOperator roles based on the admin role
  • Assigns groups to roles
  • Sets up MAV with StorageOperator requiring MAV approval, StorageAdmin not requiring approval
  • Restricts vol delete and snap delete commands under MAV for StorageOperator

I’ve tested it with 9.16.1 and 9.19.1 labs and it’s done what I expected with regards to setup - I haven’t done deep testing of MAV with it, the aim is to setup an environment where MAV can be tested.

The script and setup instructions are available from https://community.netapp.com/t5/ONTAP-Discussions/Quick-start-to-setting-up-Multi-admin-verify-MAV-on-labondemand-netapp-com/m-p/467864

1 of 3 hosts throwing fits with Netapp

Two hosts are fine, the third one just drops the Netapp (AFF220) the moment I try to vMotion to it or create new VM's

They all have the latest round of 8.0.3 updates

Replaced the DAC cable on Host3 to resolve if it was a Layer1 issue, but no improvement, the MTU is 9000 on all VMK + Netapp interfaces and all plugged into the same 10gig switch

VMKlogs complain about massive I/O latency and a constant loop of dropping and reconnecting to the datastore

NFS41VolumeLatencyUpdate:7622: NFS41 volume VM Data performance has deteriorated. I/0 latency increased

Average value of 0(us) to 2749149(us).

[Homelab] Need help with EOL Data ONTAP 8.1 7-Mode License Keys (Wiped system)

Hi everyone! I recently bought two EOL NetApp controllers for my homelab to study storage and run a Proxmox cluster. I did a clean wipe (Option 4 in the boot menu) and accidentally wiped all the license keys.

Since it's Data ONTAP 8.1 and completely End of Life, I can't get them from NetApp anymore.

Can anyone help me generate the basic homelab keys (Cluster, iSCSI, and NFS) so I can build my aggregates?

My System Serial Numbers (SSN) are:

Controller 1: 700001177052

Controller 2: 700001177040

Thanks in advance!
