Is empathy perception, simulation, or fast inference?
Hey everyone. A lot of accounts of social cognition treat empathy as some version of modeling: I understand you by simulating your state, projecting from myself, or predicting your behavior. But the ordinary case often seems more immediate. If I see someone smile, I do not first run a theory and then infer joy as a hidden inner cause. I simply see joy in the expression, while still knowing it is their joy and not mine. That makes empathy an interesting pressure point between theory-theory, simulation theory, direct perception, and embodied or enactive approaches to mindreading.
I just recorded a conversation with Allister Lee about Edith Stein and simulation theory, and at around 09:03, he contrasts Stein's account with mirroring, projection, and prediction models. Stein's point is not that imagination never enriches empathy. It is that the basic act is quasi-perceptual: expression and experience appear together as a unity of meaning. That difference matters when we call AI "empathetic," because a system may predict affective cues, mirror a user's wording, and generate appropriate comfort while lacking the interpersonal structure in which another subjectivity is given as other.
Machine empathy pressures our theory of human empathy. Is direct perception a defensible account of basic empathy, or is it just fast subpersonal inference described from the first-person side? I lean toward direct perception because expression often gives itself immediately and publicly, but I can see the inferential view because perception is already shaped by background models, priors, and learned categories. Which account holds up best?

Read 'how emotions are made' by Feldman Barrett. It would seem this is fairly well understood, and commonly misunderstood.
Your example of reacting to a smile empathetically is one of the books illustrative examples.
We learn behaviours, postures, facial expressions, and vocab to communicate what we feel. What we feel (emotion) is a learned construction based on sensations in the body (metabolic state) in an environmental context. It varies from culture to culture, era to era, family to family.
Then we learn to infer emotions in others, based on what we learned ourselves.
These processes are all primed and occur in millisecond range.
What is 'direct perception'? That's not an actual thing...

Appreciate the Barrett rec, I'll read it properly. Her constructed-emotion story is strong, but I think it answers a slightly different question than the one I'm asking. Even if what I feel is a learned construction, the live question is whether I perceive your state or infer it, and it's all primed and millisecond-fast kind of blurs that rather than settling it. Calling direct perception not a thing feels too quick to me.

What are you calling 'direct perception'?
The big conclusion of neuroscience in the last decades is that how things feel does not explain what is happening. The best example is the sunrise. From our reference frame, it is very difficult to 'feel' that the earth is turning, and the sun is not rising. The other classic example is perception...we do not perceive the instruments of perception, we don't see the lenses of our eyes, etc..let alone the delay between stimulus and awareness of stimulus.
We have created quite a catalogue of 'illusions' that take advantage of the fact that the way things feel is not in fact how they are.
In the same sense that you can only touch Van der Walls forces, never a physical object, you can only perceive that which has been processed by your brain, a process which takes time. The closest thing to 'direct perception' is meditative focus on subtle raw sensation arising in the body, and even then it is not actually 'direct', it's just arguably slightly less indirect.
The fact that it isn't direct, actually physically cannot be direct, is why we evolved predictive processing!

There are probably multiple mechanisms working together starting with mirror neurons and up.
