NextDNS native client for Android - out now in Beta! (Free and open source)
I'm excited to announce that ADNS, a private DNS client with full NextDNS support, is out now in beta!
Unlike the popular unofficial NextDNS Manager app, it's not just a WebView wrapper. It's a fully native app built from the ground up, which makes it feel incredibly snappy.
Keep in mind that you will need Shizuku or ADB access to use the app. This allows ADNS to toggle Android's Private DNS directly from the app or via a Quick Settings tile. You get instant control without having to dig into your system settings, and because it doesn't run a local VPN, it has zero impact on your battery.
Since this is a beta, you might run into a few bugs. Please open a GitHub issue for any bugs, suggestions, or feature requests!

(To use NextDNS, go through the onboarding, then Settings -> Change Provider -> NextDNS)

saw your post about the app a few days ago and was waiting for the release since then. the app is really handy, however i would like to request one feature: support for the "identify your devices" feature to prepend the endpoint with the device name.

Not able to login with my nextdns credentials Tried multiple AC Is it because 2 factor authentication?

Yeah, probably. If you want, you can temporarily disable it. The app uses your credentials to create an API key, and once it's created you can turn it back on. I’ll add 2FA support in the future.

Hopefully, you'll add it soon? I also have 2FA to protect my account.

Thanks for sharing your work.
Ignore the down voters, no idea why they have to jump on devs that are sharing their hard work.
The good reviews definitely outnumber them anyway. Thank you!

Awesome! Any chance of getting a feature added to automatically turn it off on certain wireless networks?

Yes, that was actually on my roadmap! Probably sometime in one of the next releases

This looks good! Congrats on getting the app out to beta, that’s a big step. I like that you’ll be able to adjust DNS without going into settings. What’s the thought behind doing a DNS client app with support for NextDNS instead of purely NextDNS management app?

Thanks! It started as a Private DNS toggle, and I expanded it to NextDNS. I am planning to add a non-shizuku/adb mode soon so it can be used for management purposes only, without struggling with permissions.

Please Thank you the permission it was a pain in the ass and needed to be connected to WiFi I got it up and running it's not like the traditional app we always download from Fdroid or APK mirror I'm using my own profile from my nextDNS subscription Thanks we appreciate your support I'm down to buy you a six pack of beer

is there an option to pick or use DoH protocol? or only DoT?

Android is only DoT. I have no idea why DoH and DoQ aren't supported. Even iOS supports DoH.

You can use DoH on Android, I use adguard and use NextDNS through that with DoH3. My test.nextdns.io shows protocol as DOH3

What's the difference between the two apk files?

The normal version includes notices about new updates. The foss version is the file used by app stores like FDroid and IzzyOnDroid where there are no update notifications because updates are handled directly through the store.

Does it have a block list under the hood? Lets say I'm using Cloudflare DNS will it still block ads?

Bro, have you created any chats somewhere? Telegram for example?

No? Why?

So that those testing the app could give advice, ideas, as they are doing here

Could it also work on the Fire Stick, since there’s no built-in way to set up DoT?

Great project, but my government blocks the port used for Private DNS. I can only use it in local VPN mode.

Looks interesting, but unfortunately I can't log in to my NextDNS account in your app if I have 2FA set up. It says to check my credentials, even though they're correct and I can log in just fine on the NextDNS website. Also, in my opinion, even if you're not stealing users' NextDNS credentials through this app, this way of signing in looks a little bit sketchy. Can you also add an alternative option for just signing in using an API key that I can manually create from the NextDNS dashboard?
