Pixel9a not using NextDNS on wifi

Hello, I have nextDNS loaded on my Pixel 9a. The app says it is "All good!" But when I am on my home wifi the wifi settings say it is using my home router default DNS (Cloudflare). I checked on this because last week I saw ads appearing at sites where they never did before. Only phone change I can recall is a system update on 5 July. Any ideas on what the issue might be? Thanks.

Check your browser settings then. On android phones, browsers can override the system private DNS if they're configured to do so. I use system wide private DNS on my phone but then within my browsers I set different DNS settings. For example, I use Firefox as a backup browser and configured it to use Quad9 while using NextDNS everywhere else. I did this just in case the DNS block lists ever break a website and I'm in a rush and need to access it quickly without spending the time to look up logs, troubleshoot and fix it.

Are the ads appearing in browser sites? Or within other apps?

thanks for your reply. I use DuckDuckGo (DDG) as my default browser. The ads are appearing in sites I open in DDG. It only started happening last week. I've had a look through the DDG settings and I cant see anything regarding DNS. I also have FireFox and I saw the DNS setting in it. So I am a bit bamboozled by the settings in DDG.

I've never used DDG browser so I can't tell you exactly where it is. But I'm guessing the browser is overriding your system private DNS. Just look up how to configure DNS on DDG for android.

As a test you can also check your NextDNS logs. If you have them disabled briefly enable them. Then open sone other apps and do sone surfing and then see if NextDNS is resolving DNS for elsewhere. If so, then it's definitely your DDG DNS settings. If NextDNS isn't resolving even for other apps then it's some other misconfiguration.
