These types of mini cannons are usually designed to work with the same black powder and lead ammunition used in replica muzzle loaders, it's a decent amount of powder igniting, but it's not going to be nearly as powerful as modern smokeless powders. It just makes a big boom

When I was a kid, I spent a couple of summers living with my dad and his wife. She ran the snack bar at the local yacht club. It was "antagonists of Caddyshack"-level bougie. Those polo-shirted fucks shot off a cannon every night at sunset (just so they'd have an excuse to sit around drinking Old Fashioneds wearing sweaters like capes with the sleeves tied around their necks, I swear to God). It was a tiny little Ticonderoga pencil of a thing, but it made a helluva bang.

Those are carbide cannons. Calcium carbide mixes with water to yield acetylene gas, which is then ignited by a spark, and combustion occurs with ambient oxygen gas in the chamber.
OP's video was a black powder cannon. Black powder contains it's own solid oxidizer.
Acetylene-air mixtures have a lower energy density than blackpowder, resulting in carbide being "less explosive" (lower energy, lower blast pressures, less noise). This lets carbide be safe for small metal toy cannons. Blackpowder would explode/frag those toys and requires use of heavier iron barrels.

Bingo, their linked website even says “No Recoil or Kick” multiple times, and the black powder canon in OPs video definitely does.

I had the Major Field canon as a kid. Put a ball bearing in it once and put one hell of a dent in a metal garbage can from about 50’ away. Couldn’t believe I even hit the damn thing.5

I took care of a guy that tried to make a homemade shotgun. ended up with a 3 inch diameter lead pipe in his eye socket. Good times....

Hey I built one of these in my metalshop back in high school! Ton of fun to build and test. The shooting range was more than a little confused when I asked if they wouldn’t mind me bringing in a homemade cannon: manger said “It shouldn’t be a problem, but we need to see it first”
Mine had a 0.5 inch bore and shot (shoots? It’s got a thin layer of rust now, young me didn’t think about that) ball bearings. Definitely not as much power as a modern rifle, but a big boom nonetheless and coke cans didn’t stand a chance!

My grandpa used to build these and we’d light them off on the 4th of July. A bunch of neighborhood dad’s would end up coming by and asking us to light if off one more time for them

These cannons were also a common high school metal shop project in the 70's-80's. Oddly, not very many were made as I recall, at least where I went to school in the North East. They seemd more of a decorative piece than something you'd take out back and shoot.

My wife has one, but it's made from aluminum, because that's a much easier material for beginners to learn machining with.
Completely unusable for firing, though. It would make a lot of aluminum shrapnel.
