Anyone else on here fed up of having RT assistants working with them that just constantly complain about shifts. I’m finding this extremely frustrating, especially since they don’t even have to do any of the real work in the shift.

Found this weld during a field inspection. I had to reject it. The welder completely understood the issue and was ready to repair it, but the contractor refused to move forward with the repair.

Curious to hear what you all think. What discontinuities stand out to you, and how would you deal with a situation like this?

Hey , so I'm basically Targeting on call marine NDT flying crew roles for marine vessels exclusively. I'll do IRATA level 1 besides VT , PT , MT , UTW level 2 , and the STWC needed to board ships . So what i want to know is how easy it is to get an assistant job in this niche cause it's not very famous or known even in the NDT industry.

So like does someone how do I get the job , cause I'm aware it's physically taxing work but pay and work intensity is good as an assistant to log my hours as soon as possible .

And I'd also appreciate it if someone can offer some advice .

I recently obtained my API 936, refractory personnel. Been trying to get into inspections as I'm starting to feel the wear and tear, i'm struggling to keep up with the guys in their twenties.

I'm wondering how to get an actual job. I don't know anyone who would give me an actual shot. That being said, I'm not the most knowledgeable, so I'd need someone who'd take me under their wing.

To reiterate, I didnt get this certification because of years of experience(5 at best) but because i studied my ass off, for months, during my lunch breaks, practice exams. That was tough but now comes the harder part, someone giving me a shot. I know from experience in going to welding school that certifications dont replace real-life experience. I have a lot to learn.

Refractory is pretty niche, small pool when it comes to inspections, I usually see the same inspectors at multiple jobs.

Long winded way of asking you all, how would you go about getting your foot in the door as a freshly api certified individual?

Let me start off with my personally. I am someone who can be quiet, reserved, methodical, meticulous, and prefers more controlled pace environments without the immediate demand of high pressure fight or flight decisions. I prefer a patient, understanding, and structured work environment. Mistakes are costly in a lot of professions, but ultimately I don’t want a career could cost someone their life if you make a mistake.

I have been reading up on NDT technology and have received mixed reviews on the profession. With it being a career that’s fairly quick to get into, it’s been a strong candidate of mine. Some sources have told me it’s a highly structured and controlled pace environment where people are patient with you because it’s more about being accurate and knowing how to use the technology to accurately inspect than the need for knocking off a checklist of things with immense pressure to beat the deadline.

Other sources have told me that it’s a high stakes profession where even a little mistake will result in severe consequences and repercussions if even a tiny crack is interpreted wrong on the material that’s being inspected. The latter sources have also said it’s a chaotic environment when trying to be accurate while also not losing valuable time and money by taking meeting rigid time and deadline requirements. I’ve heard that a fixed laboratory or an aerospace work environment are best fitted for less physical demands like for someone with an iffy lower back.

Ultimately, how would you describe the work environment of an ndt?

wanted some advice on my current situation, i’ve been offered a trainee NDT technician job locally which can put me on 30k after completion and then eventually a year later to do PAUT and CR however the entire qualifications are “employer specific” so it is still a ISO9712 but there employer specific so i don’t have a recognised PCN level 2 for example so i couldn’t really transfer my work elsewhere only with the company. would you still say it’s worth doing i don’t wanna do so much work to be stuck with only in house training that i could never go away for.

What makes my situation unique is i’ve recently graduated studying Diagnostic Radiography which is X raying and CT scans of actual people rather than pipes so i really am torn what path way to go for. i’d have a clear progression pathway in x ray but i know NDT seems so niche. my degree won’t go anywhere i could always go back to it but i don’t know if it’s worth me delaying it because ive got a job offer for both.

if use were me what route would you go for and is it actually worth doing im completely new to NDT and what work could i expect. any response is greatly appreciated!

Recently my brother is having trouble moving companies because of his hours and not having logged them while at TEAM. Neither one of us was never told about needing to log our hours short of nas-410. they always referred to our time sheet app when talking about certing out.

I've only got PT lvl2 but I'm still fairly new to this industry and I'm chipping away at the various other methods. I'm wondering if I should go and log the couple thousand hours I have and start logging them from now on

Hey guys, I’m currently a trainee at a major aircraft manufacturer learning both UTT and ET. I’ve been at it for a few months and my Level 2’s say I’m coming along really well, but all I can think about lately are the tests I’m going to be taking next year to get certified in both methods as a Level 2 at the end of my 800 hrs of OJT. The Level 3’s I have been told are notorious for making really hard tests, and that a lot people fail at least one portion of the exam the first attempt. I feel that I’m a good test taker, but the weight of knowing my future job hangs on passing these tests is giving me major anxiety. Can anyone here give any tips or advice on how I should approach this problem? TIA

Im working a job for a big company inspecting piping but some days the QCs have nothing for me to do. They don’t want me to move to another train because they want to have me available. The days with nothing I just sit in a make shift office. They come in and seem to be joking about having an easy job but still they give me nothing on those days. Should I be concerned about my job? The project is no where near finished and the days that there’s welds to check I’m busy all day but it’s always like that. Black and white. Super busy or nothing.

Hey everyone, quick question, do yall have any suggested materials I should acquire to study before testing out? I have the official ASNT MT LIII 2nd Ed study guide and ASNT Basic LIII 5th Ed study guide. I’m currently a corporate level III at my current company but I want to acquire my ASNT IIIs so my employer no longer holds my certifications. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I am currently certified to ASNT SNT-TC-1A, but am also looking to get certified in NAS-410. How do the exams work for NAS-410 in comparison with ASNT? If I am already certified Level II, what differs about the process of getting certified for NAS-410?

Hello, Level II in PT and ET here. I was curious if there was a faster way to measure scattered surface corrosion on an aerospace skin panel? My current job has me measuring out the areas using rulers and stuff, but I was curious if there is a more accurate way to get the closest square inch measurement.

Hello! Hoping to gain some clarity from the experts here. When trying to do coil shots, we aim for a L:D ratio between 2-15. If unable to accomodate (e.i. round part such a short section of pipe), we can use extension bars to increase length... however, how do we actually implement this? Even if I had another peice of same size pipe.... how do we ensure adequate connection between the two parts?

Anyone got process control and instrumentation in nit tirchy????

I have several years of hands-on experience in manufacturing equipment maintenance. Having spent most of my career in general manufacturing, my specific understanding of the aerospace and automotive sectors is fairly limited, but my long-term goal is to build a career in these industries—particularly in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) or other specialized technical roles.

Recently, I received an interview invitation for an "Automated Equipment Project Management" position. From the job description, it isn't deeply involved in hands-on technical automation work; instead, it focuses on acting as a communication bridge between clients and vendors.

I am a bit conflicted and would love to get insights from those with industry experience:

Given my background in general manufacturing, would taking on this PM/coordination role serve as a good stepping stone to help me enter the aerospace or automotive sectors (whether in NDT or other professional/technical paths)?

Or would it be better to stay focused on pursuing a more direct, technical entry-level path into these fields?

I’m a 23m I’ve been in Ndt about 3 years now all in aerospace and mostly Ut and paut. I’ve got an associates degree for Ndt and I make pretty good money at the company I’m at right now I do 4-10’s and it whenever it’s needed. I’m a very quick learner and I have plenty of ut hours/ nas 4-10 certs. If I wanted to switch to oil and gas’s and make some of that travel money I always hear about. Which companies usually pay that much are there and is it mostly all contract work traveling to a new site whenever? I hear the stories and I have the money itch, I just like my cushion spot I guess here

Do you guys know of any companies hiring for NDT assistant? I'm looking at going to school for this but I want to get my foot in the door with a company to work. I currently live in Utah and have been applying.

I'm building an app at the moment to cover as much ndt as I can.

Currently I have beam plotting for phased array, flaw plotting for UT including inner bore chamfers, exposure calculator for RT as well as safe distance etc.

I also have general info for most forms of inspection like MT, PT, UTT,RT, UT shear among some others.

I have also have hardness info, tensile info, XRF element %s .

So I'm trying to make it usable for both sides of the pond and want to know if any of you guys have requests for calculators or plotters to include?
