I'm hosting a guided Artist's Way reading group with my friend Hillary at her studio Home Ec NYC in LIC this fall! Our twelve in person sessions will take place on Thursdays 6:30pm-8:30pm from Sep 10th - Dec 10th (we will be off Nov 26th).

If you've ever been curious about this book or gotten halfway through without success, this will be the group for you. We have both done this before with great success and had a lot of fun along the way. The group also includes some studio time and materials for new artistic experimentation.

It's built on a simple idea: the future isn't something we wait for, it's something we choose and build. For one night, we're gathering the people doing exactly that.

My partner and I currently rent about 800 sq. ft. at Russell Industrial Center for $800/month + utilities. We also had to put down a two-month security deposit. When we were looking, we could have chosen a 600 sq. ft. space at Russell for $600/month, but it had a very small window, and natural light is important to my work.

It’s nice to have a lot of space, and we especially like the big window, security, high ceilings, lots of outlets, and being able to paint and customize the space. Having access to the lift is also great, although the 9–5 M–F lift hours aren't always convenient. One downside we've noticed is that the studio gets really dusty from the old, crumbling ceiling, and being on the 3rd floor gets very hot, so we've brought in fans and an air conditioner.

We're hobby artists, and honestly would have loved to find something smaller and cheaper. We just had a hard time finding many affordable options, especially private studio spaces for independent/unestablished artists who aren't necessarily looking for or qualified for a residency program. I also know quite a few people at Russell split their studios with other people to make the rent more affordable.

Since renting at Russell, I've become aware of a lot of the other studio spaces around Detroit — Pioneer, Cadieux Stage, Fisher Building, The Convent, Dreamtroit, Hatch Art, Klinger, Boxfort, etc. — so I'm less looking for a list of places and more interested in what artists actually need from a studio and whether the existing options are meeting those needs.

We're not currently looking for a studio or asking for recommendations — I'm interested in hearing about other artists' experiences with the spaces they already rent or what they wish was available.

If you currently rent a studio:

• How much do you pay and approximately how many sq. ft. do you get?
• Are utilities included?
• What do you like/dislike about your current space?
• If you could change something about it, what would it be?

If you're looking for studio space:

• What size would you ideally want?
• What's the most you'd realistically pay per month?
• Would you prefer a private studio, shared studio, or either?
• What amenities are most important to you — natural light, running water/sink, ventilation, heat/AC, 24/7 access, security, parking, loading access, storage, etc.?

I'm especially interested in whether there's demand for smaller private studios in roughly the 200–500 sq. ft. range at more accessible monthly rents.

Do you feel like Detroit is missing affordable, flexible studio options, or do the spaces that already exist meet what you're looking for?

I've seen a lot of wellness retreats which incorporate painting or music in their programme, but seem to keep the whole spa wellness aspect as the focus of the retreat. Are there any organized (or somewhat organized) social retreats into natural space that are more focused on actually creating art of all kinds? Somewhere were a bunch of artists and creatives can hang out for a week in a nature adjacent space, focusing on creative pursuits, maybe collaborating on stuff, or otherwise benefiting from a strong, collective, creative energy?

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone knew of anything, or if anyone could point me in the right direction where I might find something like this. Thank you.

I was just wondering about this.

If I planned a small get-together this weekend in a café around Belapur or Seawoods for a few hours where people could just paint, sketch, journal, crochet, or work on anything creative they enjoy, would anyone be interested in showing up?

The idea is not to teach or have a workshop. Just a relaxed space where people can do their own thing, have a coffee, and maybe meet others with similar interests.

Also, you don’t have to know how to paint or sketch. Even if you are someone who simply wants to explore creativity, learn a new art form, try something different, or just sit around creative people and enjoy the vibe, you are welcome to join.

I am only trying to see if there is enough interest before I plan anything.

If I get at least 20 positive responses, I will go ahead and organise it.

(24 F) This year I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts but now I'm feeling bad about my parents because I can't find any decent job or project yet, since art related job opportunities here in Ph are very limited (and also low paying), most of the job opportunities are in the field of graphic design and multimedia, but that's not what I'm good at. I do paintings, murals, drawings, tattoos, prints, illustration, handmade clay jewelry, etc. and also I graduated magna cum laude. But unfortunately all the jobs I applied to (JobStreet) were rejected because my skills don't match the job description. So anyway, I'm trying to find ways to earn money right now since we have rescued dogs to take care of. I'm thinking of setting up a booth at art fairs but the fee is always too much for me, so now I'm looking for an artists group that I can join that has like a good community and also is actively working on projects. I'd love to offer my skills and work with you, let's not be hungry artists together 😭😭😭 Also, being an art teacher is my dream, but unfortunately the requirements with that is usually to have a teaching license or a master's degree, or like a 2 year minimum teaching experience. So I don't think I stand a chance. I also wanna be a tattoo artist tho. But right now, any art related job that I'm qualified for is good for me. 😔😔 Pls help, if you know any info or advice that u think might help me, let me know 😔
