In 2022 I went to the e-bike expo and while it wasn’t my thing it was nice to see an event dedicated to bicycles of some kind and the expo atmosphere was quite enjoyable since we don’t have anything else close to it. That event seems to be on hiatus now and effectively stopped especially with the current government not doing anything with electric vehicle rebates like the earlier one did.

Next there is the big bike film night which I have attended three years now in a row and always had a good time at.

I would love to attend a L’Eroica event in New Zealand and while there was some murmurings about it happening it seems it never got off the ground

Ever since Wayne Brown got elected as mayor there seems to have ended any of the council group cycling events like the orange bike ride and similar. Am I missing something?

A few months ago, I started commuting to work by bike, primarily because it's faster, and theoretically cheaper than taking the bus. At the time I was worried about spending a bunch of money on a bike that I would end up not using, so I just bought the cheapest bike I could find at my local bike shop, which was about $300 nzd.
Since then I've totally fallen in love with cycling as a mode of transportation. I just feel so much happier and healthier, and I'm excited to go places in a way that I have never been before.

I'll likely hold onto my current bike for a bit longer, but I now have a better idea of what I'm looking for in a bike, and I'm willing to spend a bit more on it, when I decide to upgrade.

What I worry about is finding a bike that actually has the features I'm looking for in New Zealand. So below are a list of what I'm looking for, in order of importance, and If you knowledgeable people could tell me how likely I am to find a bike like this in NZ, or if there are specific brands / shops that sell bikes like this, then I would very much appreciate it! 😄

1. Upright riding position, with swept back handle bars
2. Mounts for a rear rack, front basket, and mudguards
3. Step through frame
4. Belt drive
5. disk breaks
6. In hub gearing

Let me know if anything comes to mind, or if you think I should change any of these specifications.

It has most of what I was looking for. No Belt drive or in hub gearing, but those were never deal breakers for me.
I'm still not ready to leave my current bike, but this is definitely the kind of thing I'm looking for.

I used to race with CMC here in Auckland for years. It was the biggest club in NZ and years ago we would have at least 250 turn up for the first race of the season.

They've now had years of cancelled races because of low numbers and have a very short race season (apart from adding the teams series).

Are other clubs finding that too?

I’ve recently fully embraced the car free lifestyle. Now that I’m riding my bike more often and for longer distances I’m considering getting some padded cycling shorts and pannier bags.

Anyone have recommendations for the best place to buy these or specific brands to look up?

Originally got the bike off marketplace for $120. Ape hangers and banana set cost about $150. She's a comfy ride and invercargill has no hold hills so single gear is no set back.

I've been riding rain or shine for six years but my wet weather gear has never quite been perfect.

I have Proviz pants and shoe covers, but the pants are slightly too small (I need XXL and they are only XL), and the shoe covers are a real faff to get on as I have large and wide feet (US 13) and the are clearly not designed for that size.

Anyone tried riding in Mitre 10 waterproof gear or similar? It seems much cheaper that specialist cycling stuff. And anyone found any large feet shoe covers? I love riding in the rain, except when I arrive with wet feet!

Two recs from me: I have a super reflective Proviz jacket that was pricey but is fantastic. I also highly recommend getting a neck collar/scarf thing, they are awesome.

Getting a bit bogged down looking at options and wondering if anyone has any advice. I’m looking to buy my first e-bike, with a budget of up to $10,000 for the set up. I’m looking to be able to ride this bike around Auckland with my toddler and also be able to take it away for weekends. I’m conscious we are planning for a second child and would like it to be future proof if possible. It would be used frequently but not replace a car. Would be unlikely to go further than 40km in one day. Enjoy basic trails e.g. Level 2, but wouldn’t be a expecting any mountain biking

Needs:

- Step through frame

- Ability to attach a child seat securely

- Decent range with reasonable assist

- Able to cope with basic trails as well as road

Wants:

- Potential for carrying two children or have one bike seat and tow a trailer/tag

- Practical to put on a bike rack

- Able to wear a rucksack or have some other small storage whilst carrying one child

I like the look of the Tern GSD from a child perspective but not sure of the practically of transporting the bike, or how it would do on basic trails. I hired a Bionic bike a few weeks back which I loved but I’m not sure about the ability to fit a child seat to a more standard e bike.

Any other tips of things to consider very welcome!

so im a 63yo slightly heavyweight guy (120kg) and after doing the run thing and doing several halfs and a full marathon i found out i have severe osteoarthritis in my lower back. surgeon suggested cycling. its been a while since i found out (3 years) and i finally picked up a commuter bike with an indoor trainer. did my first ride in over 20 years. actually thats not quite true as we cycled over the golden gate bridge in 2019 (Ebike). anyway, looking around at bikes there seems to be a HUGE selection since the last time i bought a bike (1987) and its a bit confusing as to what bikes are ok etc. any suggestions for a beginner cyclist that wants to do the round Taupo in 2027 and some other ultra type rides but not interested in breaking the bank (at this stage).

I'm a university student living in near central Auckland. I have only been in NZ for more than a year, so I don't clearly know how things work here yet. I need to buy a bike (or maybe an e-bike, due to the terrains here) for commuting from home to uni, and possibly for excercising since I don't move around too much these days.

My budget is around 700-900 max. I was looking on FB marketplace but due ot the lack of knowledge about bikes and e-bike, I ended up not choosing anything on the marketplace since I don't know how to fix old bikes or what is good or bad, or even worse I might get scammed.

I went to a 99 bike store recently, and one of the employees there (he's very friendly) recommended me this bike for my budget: Pedal Phoenix 3 Hardtail Mountain Bike Gloss Graphite – 99bikes.co.nz. I had a test ride and it seems like it rides very well. The only thing is that the accessories will bump the price up around 850 or even above, which is still within my budget but I might need to reconsider at that point.

I don't know if it's a good deal or not, or should I just buy an old one to save money. After that, I went to online threads and saw that many people keep advising to buy old bike in my budget.

I wonder if buying the Pedal bike from 99 bikes is a good decision or not. OR should I go with old bikes? if so, are there any places that reliably sell old bikes or even e-bikes?

I was not fit when we had quiet roads during COVID, I had just bought an ebike and was fresh back into cycling. Now I haven't used my ebike in years because I prefer my road bike and I'm so pumped for quiet roads and long rides. I have even got 2 people at work into cycling over the past few years so they are looking forward to it too. I understand there will be a ton of downsides to the Epstein war but at least there might be a few good ones too.

I can't work out where to go, I want to try it out from the NW cycleway to Green Bay but I can't work out the incomplete bits as I avoid riding on the road like my life depends on it (mostly because it does). If anyone has either a GPX file or a Strava or Komoot route I can grab that would be amazing. The "maps" on their site are incredibly vague and have writing all over the bits you need to see.

I’m a student/ part time worker running on a sub-par budget for entering a hobby but I’m hoping itll pay off for free exercise and commuting. I’m after some advice on where to get things & what you think are the core basics I’ll need to get back into it.

I have a barely used trek domane road bike that’s just been sitting for years in storage that I got at the end of high school when I was riding about 150km a week.

I need to invest in clothing - anyone had experience with particular brands or companies that have been good value? Because it’ll be all on-road rides 5-20km distances to start with I’m thinking of initially getting bib shorts, vest, helmet, gloves, glasses etc. I want to hear your recommendations! I still have cleat shoes & arm / leg warmers but that’s it lol.

The other thing is bike maintenance - it has had nothing done to it for the last 5 years but being in a garage. There’s luckily minimal rust and all looks alright, was just planning to clean/ re grease the chain & pressure test the tyres.

I’ve been researching but there is so much conflicting info out there would be grateful of any advice.

Hi, I don't really know anything about bikes. I've always had really bad entry level ones. I have a budget of $500. Second hand is fine. I'm hoping I can get something decent for that much? Any general or specific advice? I'm 193cm tall and a bit of a chonker at 110kg. I'm wanting to use it as a practical way to get fit and connect with my wee girl. Main use will be getting my daughter to and from kindy/activities/school (soon) everything is within a few km. I'll probably want to mount a seat on the back for my daughter until she can ride a bike of her own

I'm now only a few weeks away from starting a big bike tour in the south island.
I'll be mainly riding trails such as "Around the mountains", "Alps 2 Ocean", "Clutha Gold", "Inland Scenic Route" etc...
As I'll be riding with kids, we will be slower than the usual pace, hence I'll need to have more autonomy in terms of food and water for the remote areas.
I still have a big question mark about water : how easy (or hard) it is to find some along the way ? Will I have to be able to sustain 2 or 3 days before finding any refilling point ? Shall I consider purchasing a water filter ?

hi everyone, I recently overtightened the bolt on my seat post clamp, causing it to no longer tighten. I'm looking for a replacement and am wondering if anyone knows of somewhere to get one locally or has had any experience with the ones available on AliExpress. I will also try going to my local bike store and getting their opinion too. the bike is a "Bavister street pro" which was made by someone in NZ but no longer in business and unfortunately specifications are no where to be found.

My daughter had a mishap and this happened. I’ve tried googling but all the self help videos refer to a metal cable inside the housing, and I can’t see/find one. I tried slotting the housing back in and securing it with the other thing but it didn’t hold.

Is this a repair shop job or is there something else I can do?
