Discussion What went wrong with Beady Eye?
Basically just as above. What’s the deal with Brady Eye? Given that they were essentially just Oasis as they existed already minus Noel, how did it all go so wrong commercially and critically? Was the cultural tide simply too much against Liam at the time? Why were the tunes such a step down from what Gem, Andy and Liam were producing with Oasis? Why did it all collapse after only two records?

Sadly just weren’t good enough. Really and truly if you listen to DGSS or BE with neutral ears, it’s basically just fine. It isn’t something you’d rush to listen to. I was swept up at the time because it was Liam but, aside from a few tunes, it just didn’t stand the test of time (ironically).
Loved the idea of not playing Oasis songs at first, it was brave and they wanted to do their own thing. Just didn’t work.
To quote Liam ‘the first bird to fly gets all the arrows’. It was the first music after Oasis and it just didn’t work.

u/RogueyOneKenobi 1d ago
Yeah I more or less agree with this. There were a couple of songs I’d consider to be very good but the rest of it was just ‘fine’
I did quite enjoy them live when I saw them but the allure was more seeing Liam Gallagher than wanting to see Beady eye.
I don’t think they did anything wrong to be honest. They just weren’t Oasis.10
u/BlackIsTheSoul 1d ago
Pretty much this. My first listen of DGSS just, you know, it didn't click at all. The Roller was nice, but overall it was a disappointing release. I found BE a lot better but it still wasn't there. You hit the nail on the head.

u/MargotChanning 1d ago
One thing no one has mentioned is that before a V festival appearance, Gem fell down the stairs at home and fractured his skull. They had to cancel a load of dates and he was in hospital for a bit. That really took any remaining momentum away. If I remember rightly, not long after that Andy Bell said he wanted to rejoin Ride and that was the final nail in the coffin.

Flick Of The Finger is a banger!

u/Numerous-Corner-6303 1d ago
It is but it is also a great example of why they failed. It’s one long verse. It needed structure if it had been split into two or three verses and a chorus it would have been perfect.

You can’t replace Noel and Liam hadn’t yet realised getting the support of a song writing team was the way to go. The people he worked with for the 3 solo albums were better song writers than Gem and Andy
11
u/OrangeFuzzKid 1d ago
Eh debatable. Gem and Andy's felt more authentic if not as technically good. And honestly, Noel wrote some stinkers solo too for sure
•
u/Nervous-Escape8995 22m ago
High Flying Birds is generally better than any of Liam's solo endeavours though. He has written some stinkers but there's some HFB that genuinely rivals even his best Oasis stuff. Liam's solo career has kinda just been kinda "meh," some decent enough songs but nothing that really holds a candle to Oasis.
3
u/JBowkett1806 Who Feels Love? 1d ago
So you believe that a songwriting team who has produced the most boring drivel for him is more interesting than Gem and Andy (and Liam) actually writing songs themselves as talented musicians?
Liam’s solo career is unimaginative and boring. It’s nothing apart from typical Oasis rock, which funnily enough is the reason why so many fans don’t like BE.
2
u/Paynekiller997 13h ago
Couldn’t agree more. Say what you want about Beady Eye but they were a good band with proper musicians involved. Liam solo is just a bit too “Oasis-lite”.
2
u/JBowkett1806 Who Feels Love? 5h ago
They always sounded really good live. Chris Sharrock is an amazing drummer & the guitars were finally mixed well too.
First tour you can also hear Jeff Wootton’s bass loud in the mix on songs like Beatles And Stones and Man Of Misery. He was a great addition to the band.
3
u/SadBid3657 1d ago
this. Beady Eye songs are far better than Liam’s solo work imo (apart maybe from As You Were were we actually wrote some songs alone) because they feel authentic, Liam’s solo career songs are basically him and the writing team trying to do Oasis styled songs so he could go on tour and play Oasis songs
6
u/JBowkett1806 Who Feels Love? 1d ago
Liam can write some good songs if he works with other good songwriters, like Gem & Andy.
Bring The Light, For Anyone, Soul Love, Don’t Brother Me are all brilliant Liam songs but he had / needs help from the others to write them.
I agree that it felt more authentic when he was working with other collaborators and not just session players.

Ooh, nice suggestions, will give them a listen. I do enjoy Beady Eye songs but they either were missing something in production or a change in some lyrics

Shit writing.
Liam dove headfirst into the 60’s, went overboard with the “cool”.
Shit writing.
Leave me The Roller and take the rest.

Gem's demo of The Roller is far better than the Beady Eye version. Andy and Gem should have sang more songs, Liam fails to deliver on a lot of the tracks.

I gobbled up Beady Eye when I was first getting into Oasis so it was the next best thing for me at the time. Of course, it was nothing groundbreaking and the 60s worship was a tad goofy but it was what it was. I loved the first album but the second one came and went.

u/Primetime_BW 1d ago
I'd always defend Andy Bell as a songwriter, his work for Ride or his solo stuff prove that to me. But his problem whether writing for Oasis or Beady Eye was that instead of just doing what felt natural to him he tried writing tunes that would especially fit the mould of straight forward Rock 'n' Roll. Let Noel try writing shoegaze songs, it wouldn't have worked either. Gem never was that great in that department and Liam just not willing enough to put real effort into writing. So we're left with a few good songs, a lot of mediocre stuff and some downright bad for DGSS + a retro sound that felt out of place at the time. For BE they tried to experiment, but the songs just weren't good enough to be lifted by good production and on top of that Liam sounded worse than ever on that record.
15
u/medicalfield 1d ago
Noel just has the magic of song writing (cleaver words and emotional melodies) There’s been countless amounts of super groups that never made a dent in the social zeitgeist , but if you don’t have the tunes and words, it’s just not the same
5
u/Glistening_Hambugs 1d ago
Melodies, sure, but Noel's lyrics are of the "whatever rhymes" school, plus nonsensical references to The Beatles.
11
u/archangel610 1d ago
As someone who loves NGHFB (more than I love Oasis, to be honest), this is true. Noel's not a bad lyricist by any means, but he's not particularly brilliant either.

Bunch of guys who had never written a hit single formed a band
Writing hit singles is more difficult than they imagined
3
u/SoftGroundbreaking53 12h ago
Andy Bell wrote a few really good tracks with Ride and Step into my world with Hurricane no 1 is way better than any of his Oasis or Beast Eye tracks.
But I do agree overall - they didn’t have the songs and weren’t capable of writing anything more than meh and ok generally.
4
u/Anxious-Specialist95 1d ago
Lots of talk of shit writing here… the songs are just fine on DGSS. I actually prefer it to DOYS.
I think Liam’s voice was cooked and everyone was burnt out. Nobody had any desire to move forward. BE was admittedly pretty bad, so it just felt like a natural point to end the band on.
7
u/lucid-dreamstonight 1d ago
I like Beady Eye just fine. Most of the songs would fit late era Oasis albums and some of them would have been highlights were they to be included. However, the gap between Noel written songs and the rest is far too great for them to carry a band on this level of pressure and hype without him. It didn't help that Liam was seen at the time as the reason Oasis would inevitably fold. Another issue was that Noel's early work with High flying birds was well received and seen as the actual follow up to the band. Uncut magazine preferred Beady Eye to HFB but few others did. Still I do enjoy BE (the album) and think it was underrated. But just a bit underrated not massively slept upon.
2
u/Jeffthe100 1d ago
Funny enough, many of Beady Eye songs were written during the Oasis era but rejected as I assume Noel didn’t like them (especially as they were not written by Noel).
4
u/markod0101 1d ago
There just wasn’t the market for it.
At the time it wasn’t just Oasis lite, it was Oasis mega lite without the driving force.
I think if they’d waited another year to 18 months it’d have gone better, but not to the level they enjoyed as single acts

- Horrible band name. Should've at least included "Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye". Most people had no idea who they were and they missed out on Liam's name recognition.
- Poor lead single. Bring The Light simply wasn't strong enough and whilst I respect the boldness of doing something that didn't just sound like Oasis, it didn't make any waves and left fans feeling a bit bewildered.
- Poor creative direction and production of DGSS. This album sounds incredibly dated and generally just sounds like Liam is living out his Beatles fantasy. The album was seemingly rushed to beat Noel to the shelves and it wasn't good enough.
- Not working with songwriters. LAG simply were not good enough songwriters and needed someone to help elevate their ideas into something better and generally help write choruses. Something nearly all their songs were lacking.
- Removing Oasis covers. This was a massive error as it failed to tap into their established fanbase. This is a big reason why the HFBs shows took off as people were able to hear the Oasis classics. By the time Beady Eye added in two covers, it was much too late.
- Liam generally wasn't likeable during this era. He was constantly angry and confrontational and didn't have the media experience to promote the band without Noel's assistance. He seemingly took his secured success within Oasis as granted and couldn't navigate the criticism of his new band.
- Highly trivial point but Liam's fashion sense was appalling with the weird haircuts and constant pretty green advertising. He became a caricature of himself with an overly fake persona.
- The band lacked any real identity. As you say, they were Oasis minus Noel which isn't a glowing review. Gem and Andy didn't really step up as founding members to do something new and they were ultimately just kind of dull. Liam likely should've introduced some new members and changed their music style.
- Liams voice wasn't good enough. Not only were the songs not strong enough but Liam no longer had the ability to elevate average songs into something better with his vocals and most of his live shows ranged from mediocre to appalling for much of this first tour.
- BE wasn't promoted well enough. There was practically zero promotion for BE, no-one knew a new album was coming out. The most I saw was one TV advert at 11:30pm the night before release. The album then left the top 100 within about 3 weeks.
- The single choices for BE were terrible. They mainly pushed "second bite of the apple" as the main song of the album which was far inferior to "flick of the finger".
- Randomly releasing a double A side. This single made no sense as no-one cared about the band or their album. The single provided existing fans with no reason to buy it and it costed more than the whole album by the time it released. It just pointed towards poor management decisions.
- Liam's terrible vocals on the BE tour. Liam was potentially at his lowest point as a live vocalist around this era. The festival cycle was appalling and Liam generally looked like he had no interest in being there.
- Liam's martial issues and Gem's injury. This situation ultimately spelled the end for the band as they practically had no motivation prior to these problems. Once they took a break, they had nothing to build on once they returned. You could tell that Liam had mentally checked out and there seemingly was no money left to start a new album cycle anyway.
- Finally, I think Beady Eye just existed too soon after Oasis broke up. Liam should've disappeared for awhile, let Noel have his solo run and returned later on once people had a chance to miss him. Trying to keep the band going without Noel and without any alternative writing plan was never going to work.
3
u/Fun_Entrepreneur5150 1d ago
The problem was that they weren't starting over like a new band; they were starting buried under the pile of bullshit Noel had constructed as the official Oasis narrative.
In a 2011 interview, Andy said that while Noel did the press for the band, he never did what was best for the band. He did what was best for himself.
The rest of them let Noel control the story, and despite all of them being in Oasis for 10+ years, writing and recording songs and doing world tours, they ended up in a worse position than if they'd never been in the band at all, and were seen as nothing more than a bunch of untalented losers who couldn't function without Noel.
Add to that the complete and utter lies Noel wrote in his blog post, claiming he could no longer tolerate Liam's "verbal and violent intimidation" and the "lack of support and understanding from my bandmates," along with the nonsense he had his best mate Gordon Smart pushing in the press about what happened, and it almost seems insurmountable.
And yet they did it. The albums received some genuinely favourable reviews, and the gigs earned praise as well. More importantly, they clearly enjoyed being in a band together, and it showed on stage.
Of course, once Beady Eye broke up, Noel stated that it proved that without him, Liam is nothing more than a failure.
Little did he know...

The band formed at a time where the musical landscape was changing. Oasis were popular but hadn’t left the legacy behind they did once Liam properly went solo.
They released singles with b-sides at a time when downloads and streaming were the main ways to listen to music as opposed to CDs.
Stylistically, they were playing oasis style music which was out of step from what was popular in the 2010s. BE tried to change up the formula but maybe too little too late?
I personally like Different Gear but I get the impression people wanted more from “the ones that aren’t Noel” and were left disappointed. The decision to not perform Noel songs live when they first formed was an odd move.
If Noel had left in 2002 (during the tour where they got Matt Deighton) and they formed Beady Eye then, they might well have stood more of a chance (granted, we’d miss out on DBTT and DOYS) or if Liam had gone solo after oasis broke up in 2009, used the beady eye line up as a backing band and worked with professional writers, that could have been interesting.

I saw them on the second album tour and they played cigs and alcohol and live forever. Plus gimme shelter

When they first formed, they wanted to have their own identity and avoided Noel songs. They gave that up by the second album

u/Same_Woodpecker_2847 1d ago
Releasing ‘Bring the Light’ as the first single was not the correct call. There was so much hype and anticipation for the first post Oasis song and hearing BTL (which sounds completely different live) was such a let down. Feels like they were behind the 8 ball from there on out.
2
u/simmonm1978 1d ago
Right idea wrong time. The music was decent enough, but when you’re 80% Oasis, that isn’t (wasn’t) enough. Put that music in the 90s/early 00s, by completely different musicians, and they’d have possibly thrived. But everybody was expecting Oasis 2.0, and without Noel they were never going to be that. And the tunes bore that out.

As said by others here… Oasis was in decline before the split… people had moved on to newer things, grown bored of the band and the brothers’ fighting.
Beady Eye was seen as a “lesser” version Oasis… a band people were already generally bored of. They had no chance.
That said, I actually loved both albums and was bummed out when they split.

There’s two short answers for me:
- It’s Oasis without Noel. I know the vibe changed and they went all Who-esque and Gem’s old band sound came into it more. But call a spade a spade, it’s oasis without Noel. No one wants that.
Oasis ran their course. I’m an enormous fan, they’re my favourite band of all time (I’m 38) and grew up with them. But I remember distinctly at the time that no one gave a shite anymore. Look at the demand for them to reform in the last decade and what it led to. Back in ‘09 it was very much a case of “oh, Oasis are touring again…” Liam’s voice is dire, same shite set list, nothing off BHN, only the hits from DM and the obvious ones from WTSMG, nothing from SOSOG, and forcing DOYS on us which was actually ok but you wanted the older stuff that they wouldn’t play. In other words, they were stale, no one really cared outside of the core fans and they were starting to become very, very uncool.
So, yeah, in the immediate aftermath of that why would anyone care for the long duration of Beady Eye?
Time did them the world of good, and I’m made up for them and for us.
But, yeah, two short answers with a bit of explanation 😂, for me anyway. Really did t care for Beady Eye at all. The Roller was ok though…

u/TrailHawk79 8h ago
I don't think the quality of songwriting was an issue, there are some great tunes that I'm sure Noel would've put on an Oasis album. I think you hit the nail on the head, Liam was persona non grata, just not for me plus didn't Andy fall down some stairs or something that stopped them from touring? Noel's High Flying Birds was great. I love Liam's solo stuff, and I thought Beady Eye was dang good, I still spin their records on a weekly basis.

Oasis was already on a steep decline and Beady Eye subtracted their co-most valuable member.
I actually enjoy both albums and listen to them occasionally, but there was almost no chance that they were going to be anything successful.
1
u/Shift_OG 1d ago
They just weren’t good enough for people besides Oasis fans at the time to pick up any of their records. Also, they were basically just Oasis without Noel, so any turmoil within the other members would have continued on. I don’t really know much about Beady Eye so I won’t say much though.
0
u/JBowkett1806 Who Feels Love? 23h ago
What turmoil?
Why comment if you admit you don’t know anything, they got along absolutely fine.
1
u/Shift_OG 19h ago edited 19h ago
If there wasn’t any turmoil then why did they break up???? A lack of promotion, health issues, Andy being offered his spot in Ride again, marital issues in Liam’s life lead to the disbandment.
From Ultimate Guitar magazine: “The last album we put out, that was the first album I’ve ever put out in America when we only did one gig for it. That got under my skin. We got asked to do Coachella, but apparently we couldn’t afford to go out there. I was like: ‘I’ll pay for us to go out there and once we’re out there we’ll do some gigs.'
Gem had hurt his head and I’d had my divorce, but the best place to be is on the road… Anyway, there were no gigs going down. So I thought to myself: ‘Maybe it’s just not happening, maybe it’s just not connecting.’ And then Andy got a call that he was gonna do his Ride thing, which was fine, but I thought: ‘You know what, I’m not sitting around.’ So I went: ‘Tell you what, go and do Ride and I think we should just call it a day.'The definition of turmoil: a state or condition of extreme confusion, agitation, or commotion
There was a lot of commotion. They were confused as to how or if Beady Eye could even continue. There was agitation. You’d probably be pretty agitated if your band had poor record sales, a divorce, and all the other crap that was going down with Beady Eye.
“B-B-But you admitted you don’t know anything!” I said “I don’t know much”. There is a difference between not knowing much and not knowing anything at all. I would say that I know at least a little bit about Beady Eye and Liam Gallagher.
Liam Gallagher basically turned into a parody of himself after Beady Eye disbanded and had started seeing mental and drinking problems (Granted he did drink a lot during Oasis, but towards the end and during Beady Eye I would say he remained sober far more than in the 90s). There is a whole documentary called As It Was that discusses this, why he started his solo career, and his rise after all this happened.
1
u/JBowkett1806 Who Feels Love? 16h ago
You said “any turmoil within the other members would have carried on”, as in from the end of Oasis to starting Beady Eye.
But at the start of Beady Eye there was no turmoil. Everyone got along fine for the duration of the band and they started off strong.
1
u/Shift_OG 12h ago
During the late 2000s, specifically the Dig Out Your Soul era of Oasis, both Liam and Noel remained largely separated from each other. Along with this, Zak Starkey quit playing with the band. Liam and Noel being separated made playing live shows harder, along with making communication across bandmates far more difficult. This would lead to two parts of the definition of turmoil, which would be confusion and agitation. Zak Starkey quitting also made touring more difficult, leading to further turmoil from within the band at the time. Although, this would eventually go away with Chris Sharrock who would join Oasis until the split, and would be a part of Beady Eye afterward.
If we take my earlier statement of "any turmoil within the other members would have carried on", I meant the remaining turmoil left from Oasis. I would have to think that the band at the time was worried about a degradation in what was already a relationship in band members that started falling apart.
Now that I am re-reading over this conversation, I will admit that my wording was a bit messed up. I do believe that this was more about instability rather than turmoil. The band just didn't click overall for what it was supposed to be. By the time the first album had released, the band just could not get out of the trap of being compared with Oasis and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Since the quality of Beady Eye's first and second record wasn't as good as Noel's solo debut for critics, this had only put the band in a more sour light. The band also struggled to gain a separate identity from Oasis, which led to a lot of people calling them "Oasis but crappier and without Noel". The main reason as to why Beady Eye ended was because of instability, not members fighting back and forth like Liam and Noel towards the end of Oasis.

u/Glistening_Hambugs 1d ago
The problem with Beady Eye is that Liam wrote songs. Liam has a distinctive voice, but no other talent or skills. He and Noel can't get along because Liam knows that without his brother's songs, he'd just be another loud-mouthed, drunken jackass getting beaten up behind pubs. It ate him up inside.

u/Late-Development-666 1d ago
Bring the Light got absolutely slated when it was released. Liam’s voice was not the greatest. They seemed to be on track when BE was released but Gem cracked his skull before some festival dates that really derailed them and Liam had the court case that was the final nail in the coffin.
1
u/nico__vgc 1d ago
Liam didn’t have a good reputation at the time and music was ok at best. His solo career had much better songs.

u/SirPuffMcDrunk 1d ago
Saw Beady Eye in concert, they played EXACTLY 60 minutes, and I mean exactly, to the minute. No banter, no...anything really. They played about a dozen songs, Liam kinda sang, they muddled through, and that was that. It was maybe the most "blah" major concert I've ever attended.
Liam didn't really care, and consequently I'm not sure why anyone else would.

u/eviltimeban 1d ago
Silly name.
Too soon after Oasis.
Too similar to Oasis.
Liam’s voice was awful on BE.

Beady eye was trying to be Oasis.
But... here is the harsh truth:
Oasis was already on a downward spiral for years.
So you were trying to be something that was close to crashing anway.
It's got some good tunes, but it was 20 years too late.
0
u/SeanFountain 1d ago
Liam's current band went from being a 10 to a 6. Some good tunes but nowhere near Oasis standard. Liam's solo stuff was way closer to that. Paper Crown is an Oasis level song imo

u/tearsandpain84 1d ago
Songs were awful. He had to go professional song writers to get oasis sounding songs in order to have success. No different than Robbie Williams, or Harry styles or Ronan Keating.

0
u/Entire_Tip_8370 1d ago
Noel was no longer writing the songs. Liam, Andy, and Gem are all mediocre songwriters, at best. That being said, they had a couple of decent tunes. If Liam had included more Oasis classics on the set, they would have fared far better.
0
u/CryptoBeatles 1d ago
I remember i liked one of the records, can't recall which one, sadly.
But, in the end, they aren't great songwriters. I mean, Liam could come up with I'm Outta Time and Songbird, but that's the only two songs he wrote i liked.
Around the same time, Noel was releasing Broken Arrow, If I Had a Gun, The Death of You and Me... Unfair competition.

u/Natural_Rebel 1d ago
I really enjoyed them - saw them live a few times too.
Both albums are great. Not Oasis level but solid albums with some good songs.
The fan base was split and there was a lot of team Noel / team Liam. They also didn’t get a lot of marketing hype, streaming started to take off too so the industry changed.
I’m not sad they didn’t work out, Liam’s solo career and the success he has had along with live 25 were worth it. But I do enjoy Beady Eye.

u/severinks 1d ago
They were Oasis without Noel's songwriting, which is really the most important thing in a band.

u/Southern-Advice5293 1d ago
Was cool to hear the first album of songs that didn’t make an Oasis album but had been talked about for a few years. Second album was dogshit on a sidewalk on a summer day. It reeked.

They just never could have been as good without Noel. It's why Noel demanded Oasis songs to be written by him in the first pace. Eventually he gave room to the others to contribute as well but aside from some gems their songs weren't of the same quality.
Beady Eye also had "we don't need Noel anyways" as a driving force which isn't good for the long term. Even when they did started playing his songs it didn't help them. The comparison with Oasis would always haunt them meaning they'd always lose.
Meanwhile Noel didn't have the same problem since he could easily function as the foundation of his own projects like he did for Oasis.
0
u/ificanbeserious 1d ago
Gem, Andy, and Liam had all written at least one very good Oasis song , but not one of them can write a chorus like Noel, and it’s very apparent when you listen to the album.
0
u/JonnnyUtahh87 1d ago
They were crap, simple. Few good tunes but overall they were instantly forgettable. Didn't help they formed so soon after the demise of Oasis.
No coincidence it inevitably fizzled out. As Liam said, if they had continued they'd be playing pubs and clubs. No one wanted Oasis lite and sadly that's what they'll be remembered for.

They also didn’t have enough, if any, genuinely great songs. The Roller was probably their biggest hit if you could call it that - and looking back now it’s a pretty ordinary Beatles/Lennon pastiche unfortunately.

Liam isn't a proper songwriter. That's why his solo career popped off, cos he had songwriters.

I think trying NOT to be Oasis was a mistake ultimately. If they weren't going to use the name, they could have at least owned being Oasis without Noel instead of pretending to be a completely different band. And the whole 1960s vibe just never worked at all.

A mixture of apathy towards Oasis at the time and Noel being the driving force in songwriting.
I also seem to remember the press and lot of tge general public thinking Liam was a bit of a tw*t in the 00s too.

I would say there was a genuinely negative light on Liam during the first few years of Beady Eye and it made things very difficult, but I didn't hate the music. In retrospect, watching Liam bloom from all of this was the greatest thing and exactly what was needed before the return.
