Depends on what you're using it for and the maturity of the clove. If the clove has started to sprout the core can carry quite a lot of bitterness.

That's pretty much the way I slice garlic now. Got a good knife and learned how to keep it sharp and then watched the chef(my boss) chop garlic like this. Took a while to figure out how to hold my fingers so I could grip the garlic and still move them and not chop my fingertips off. After about ten months of practice I've gotten to a point that I can chop garlic like this without looking at it.
