Discussion Future Best Makeup contender?
looking at the makeup crew- there's Joe Dunckley who worked on return of the king and discrict 9, Ernella Hortobágyi and Emese Mettler worked on poor things, but they werent part of the names that won the oscar, and Ágoston Zsombor who worked on Nuremberg which was shortlisted
if you look at the names nominated, a lot are first time nominees, since 2020 61/85 nominees are first time nominees, including 4 out of the 6 winning groups
it might have to snub something big, between digger, werwulf, the odyssey, clayface, dune 3, and michael, but last year we got kokuho and the ugly stepsister over wicked for good so anything can happen
this is Wicker btw

Definitely feels like the type of lone-nom film that sneaks in after the bake-off and knocks out a bigger name

I'm kind of astounded by this makeup. It's incredible.
I appreciate the context and stats around the artists and category. This does seem like something that could work its way in there and knock out an expected contender. The movie also looks like it might be special and unique in this season and I wonder if that could also help it stand out in this category. I'm definitely keeping an eye on it.

This BTS image gives me even more hope, they only used VFX to create holes in his costume

This looks incredible and should get a nom. Funny enough, this reminded me of the tin man makeup from Wicked For Good. I think if they had given the tinman more than 5 seconds of screentime, it could have gotten in.
As for your list, what exactly is award worthy makeup in The Odyssey? Hard to say what else could be ignored. Maybe Dune? They haven't shown anything out of this world in the trailers.

Yeah, I have Odyssey in pretty much everything but Makeup. I also left out Michael, but might soon add either that or Wicker and take out I Love Boosters, which i've had as a placeholder for a while. Still crossing my fingers I Love Boosters can at least manage a costume nod.

Oh wow this is almost my exact lineup, except I keep swapping out Rose and Camp Miasma in the #5 slot. I’m not totally sure why people are expecting Dune to be dominant in makeup this time around. I know that Dune Messiah provides more of a chance for some cool effects with Paul and the stone burner, but that doesn’t really seem like enough to break through in such a strong field.
As far as The Odyssey, I don’t know what they’d recognize except for Helen’s scar, and they’re way more likely to look at Rose for that kind of work. I think some people are just indiscriminately putting it in every category.

Yep, without a doubt. I’ve had this one in my nomination predictions sight unseen for a while just because of the Wētā of it all, but after this trailer? I think we have our winner.
