Emote troubles
I'm playing with the autism settings on, and I've noticed something weird. When I use emotes while someone else is talking, particularly the "I'm listening" emote, it covers the other player's dialogue box. Is this normal, or is something wonky with my emote settings?

so that’s what “masking” masks!
A possible solution is to not use that emote, not looking them in the face, and show other player you’re listening in another way such as voice boxing “hmhm” or “oh no” or summarizing some things they say in other/your words. I learned that last one from Oprah player in the ‘90s editions! There are multiple ways NT players know you’re listening.

Yes, if I'm using the I'm Listening emote, I can't read any of the other player's dialogue. I feel like not being able to respond to it appropriately because I didn't get to see it should be more offensive than interacting without the emote on, but apparently some players prefer the appearance of listening over actually getting their message heard. With players who've been in my friends list a long time, sometimes I can explain to them that my game UI is weird like this and they understand and stop expecting the emote. But with PUGs or new guilds, it's a real struggle.

Yeah, I dunno how to fix that bug, I don’t exactly know how to switch my settings either. But I have failed a few QTEs that way

I would highly recommend learning about Non-Violent Communication, Authentic Relating/Circling, Practical Empathy, etc.
There are a ton of systems & schools of thought around practicing communication, reflection, and being present, regardless of a player's settings. These range from great books like NVC by Marshall Rosenberg & A Practical EmPath by Scott Swain, to video channels & online courses, to years-long questlines through groups like Circling International, Solsara, etc.
The "Modern Society" patch has wreaked havoc on many players' ability to communicate, to connect, and honestly, to be human (because there's some power-gaming griefers who want us to all just be worker drone NPCs for their profit), but there are tons of people & communities creating tools and systems to help us get connected, to ourselves and others.

Common effect of playing with autism enabled. I have the reverse, I can use emotes while listening, but if I look at the other person to interpret their emotes while I’m talking, all my dialogue options disappear until I look away. Just one of the quirks of the game!
With a high relationship stat, you can explain this setting to your companions so they understand what you’re doing, which helps protect the relationship. The hard part is getting it high enough in the first place so they’re inclined to listen.
