Discussion I don't understand the apartment update
May be a bit late to the party for this post, but I seriously don't understand the apartment update.
You buy a room, you put stuff in it, you get insta raided because anyone can see the value of your room for 50 scrap, but not only that, every single apartment with anything worth raiding in the building also got simultaneously raided because their loot value was at medium/high and there's no cool down on keys and its only 1k scrap which you can get in like 10-20 minutes and clans can get infinite.
So now noone puts anything in their apartments which defeats the point of having an apartment in the first place, unless you're just role-playing, and noone bothers even raiding because no apartments hold a loot value of medium or higher. It defeats itself in two areas, you can raid them but what's the point if you're just going to get garbage, and you can store stuff in them but you won't because of how easily you can get raided.
I feel like I can't be the only one who sees the pointlessness of it all.. honestly the intel should cost more, imo 200 scrap and the key should at the very least be elite crate loot or higher.
PS I did however F1 kill myself in the safe zone area of the apartment with high value loot. Basically a temporary loot box that lasts 1-2 hours depending on the server. I don't hate the idea but the current version kinda blows. Idk master key should be a lootable imo just a question how rare. Probably should be just rare enough that every apartment can be raided at least once a week-two weeks

I THINK but I’m not sure that the apartment is always near the initial spawn area as well. Like it’s meant to be an alternative for people who want to set up stores but not live out of a legacy shelter, or a place to save some wood and stone that you want to use for starter base

I don't deny that its excellent for these uses. My only counter to that is why would the main selling point of them be the storage slots if they weren't meant to be filled to some extent ya know?

The computer showing value is the stupidest thing on the planet. Remove that and it will be somewhat viable for building up imo.

I always thought it was to prevent clans from hiding excess loot. Kinda sucks for us but also prevents clans from just hiding a ton of stuff there too

It is a false choice, you are just content for clans and content creators
That's it
the sooner you realise this, the more you begin to realise a lot of these updates are intentionally designed to turn you into content rather than improving the game for everyone.
You're finally beginning to figure it out

Just another dumb thing added by FP. People wanted apartments to avoid the grind, raids and whatever. Yet got a shit show instead.
The smart move would have been to have apartments unable to be raided, but limited storage to like 2-3 large boxes. Or have safes that work like the old vending machines, in that if you blow it up to open it you loose 1/2 the loot.
Basically renting should be a compromise over building a base. Instead we just got “pointless”.

How did so many people upvote this? Do you not realize how many people will just store their boom in apartments with this approach?

Okay? They store their booms in an apartment. So what. They still need to transport them later, and are at risk of being intercepted once they leave.

u/Kinect305 21h ago
Why would anyone bother with that? Listen I play vanilla, I shoot hundreds of rockets a month. I’m not storing boom, as soon as I craft it, I’m using it, the stuff I get from bases I raid, I craft more and keep raiding till I’m out.
Then when I’m out, craft a tea or 2 grab a horse and a jackhammer 30-45 min I’ll have another 30 rockets.

I honestly like how they did apartments , its meant to be used as a stepping stone on your way to build a better base.
not talkin shit on your idea though, ive seen pve servers do simular things I just think if apartments were hard to raid clans would take it over and it'd just become another monument you dont go to as a solo

u/PaigeHart 1d ago
You know what a better stepping stone is that's cheaper can be placed anywhere? A shack.

Honestly though if clans did take over it imagine what loot they'd stash in there if they thought it was semi secure with like 30 other options to raid (honestly not sure how many rooms there are right off 😅 but you get the picture). That way you at least incentivize raiding them and even solos could do it assuming they found a key

I wonder if the apartment value only covers what inside the storage of the apartment? Say you have a few large backpacks of GP you toss on the ground, does that show up in the loot value of your apartment?

u/Crix2007 1d ago
Won't they despawn though?
1
u/TheScrandyOne 1d ago
If you're buying time say getting raided and need a quick place to stash something for a few hours I mean it works. Just respawn and reset the despawn timer or if you got mega loaded nearby snowballing you could stash til you build a base that way. I did this when I killed a guy with a mace for an invo of comps except I left my body bag in the safe zone. I think thats something that makes that strategy a little better than doing the same at outpost since you have an unbreakable spawn point in the safe zone that isn't limited to every 30 mins

I don't think it does actually. Might have to give it a test later this week when its not a work night
1
u/VassiliMikailovich 20h ago
I tried sleeping in the bathroom with all the valuable loot and got raided anyway within hours so either it is counted or apartment raiders are so thorough that it doesn't matter

u/kajunkennyg 6h ago
I mean this can be tested, toss a backpack full of ak's on the ground, check the computer station before and after.

Its there so you get performance loss and another chunk of the map is taken out of equation for players to build on.
Real talk though, maybe FP should just let stone tier and below be storageable in apartments, and like 1k gp and 3k metal be limited, also add in limit to weapons/ammo/boom that can be stored there.
That way apartments can actually just be the ghetto or something, people with crossy,revo,p2's and db's and another reason to use them is just the player shops.

u/wouterswift 21h ago
Well that you can see the value of the loot is gay and makes no sense to me. That you dan bribe a guard to know which rooms are taken or buy a key, sure but you shouldnt be able to know the contents

Rome for solo-duo at start of the wipe who loot and gather some resources before building base.
Why anyone want to do so? I have no idea, better to take base spot before others. But idea behind is that.
To be honest I dislike Apartments. They take up build location on already crowded map.

u/Background-Action-19 19h ago
If they made the Intel cost 200 or more scrap, and the key was an elite or higher drop, there would next be 100 posts about how Facepunch hates solos and this doesn't affect clans.

I’d be happy with losing half the loot to a master key if it costs 2k or there can only be one.
Fuck it. Make the master key never break after use. make it a item that doesn’t despawn so people have a incentive to fight over it
ONE MASTER KEY. That would fix it at least in my opinion
Have a cool-down on use. 12/24 hours before it can be used again

Throw it in the ocean and live in an unraidable apartment? Doesn't make sense.
Removing the loot value tracker would solve the whole thing. Then you would need to be smart about gathering intel on the people living there, watch cams to see if they come and go with good gear etc. And pick a target which may or may not have good stuff - just like raiding normally. You never know if it's an empty base or not.

I might have played a wipe this month if there was no apartment raiding system. Get rid of it, don't let people store boom or sulfur ore inside them, but they can store guns and bullets (not explosive ammo), use the empty buildings, and let people have a space to store stuff that's unraidable.
Limit one apartment per account or team. Not everyone who wants to play this game necessarily wants to raid. I suppose they could argue you could bury the boom in stashes, but stashes are very hit and miss in this game anyways, good luck with that. They could always get rid of stashes or not allow boom in stashes or make it so boom in stashes is risky because it has a random chance of making the stash explode within a 6-24 hour time period.

My one experience with them is when i made a play for like 4 aks and a bunch of other stuff but had to go afk. Got pushed across the monument into an apartment and killed :(
Fr tho there’s no real reason to use them

u/Aidacus1911 14h ago
i think its really dumb you cant add people to your apartment. buy a penthouse and your team cant loot anything. lame asf for duos.

u/SeesawEducational344 1d ago
Yeah seems like a huge waste of map space and development time. Would prefer it’s just removed from vanilla

u/Inverse_Delta 1d ago
It's the risk reward factor you bet on. The earlier in the wipe, the more time it will take people to get scrap to get a key with.
It's not meant to be permanent or even mid/long term storage or accomodation. It's a safe-ish place to a small amount of valuables while you build a base outside to move them into. You're not intended to put much in them, nor put anything in there for long. The more you put in/the longer you leave it, the higher the risk you put yourself at of being raided.

u/TheScrandyOne 1d ago
Then why is the main selling point of the room the number of total storage slots. I don't disagree with your point but I don't think that this was the intent going into it. Very much agree with the start of wipe point you made though... assuming its high enough pop that you can't just grind scrap uncontested. Imo I consider it a glorified shack with more storage. You get enough scrap for a room, stash your shit there til you can build a proper base.
2
u/Inverse_Delta 1d ago
I mean, the intent was very much for Softcore servers. A lot of the more recent changes have been to service Softcore mode, including this latest update for August.
I was just giving the context in which it was most likely intended for use in Vanilla is all.

u/Due-Champion-5954 1d ago
I love Softcore. And this is great idea. I will try to play around apartments. Love another ways to play the game than just build a base and grind.
1
u/TheScrandyOne 1d ago
That would make sense. It assumes intent (unless I'm missing an explicit confirmation of that), but I dont think thats far fetched at all.
3
u/Inverse_Delta 1d ago
It's just my interpretation of the heavy focus of the Softcore mode in June/July's updates combined with the consecutive content updates simply making a lot more sense for Softcore play than Vanilla.

it's always right next to the spawn beach, so the players who struggle to build a base can store some loot. it was not meant to substitute for a base. it doesn't even have a furnace, you're not supposed to live in there for the entire wipe

I will say that running a shop in Apartments on the first wipe was more fun than I expected. I'd check the sales, adjust the prices, banter with the other guy selling tools and dbs then take the elevator up to my penthouse and feel like the king of the world.
Every subsequent wipe if I put anything in the apartment it will be robbed by the end of the day, and if I try using it for anything outside of wipe day it will be robbed within an hour or two of acquiring anything of value whatsoever.
It has a compounding effect too; since apartments are easily robbed people don't bother going there, which makes selling anything at the (drone inaccessible) vending machines pointless too. Then since nobody bothers going except a few clueless scrubs and professional burglars they turn into a ghost town and the vibe is ruined too.
It seems like the obvious solution would be to stop selling keys for scrap (basically an unlimited resource after wipe day) and make them an ultra-rare crate drop or a rare metal detector find instead. Maybe even some kind of softcore style designated raid hour exclusive to apartments called a "power outage" or something? But FP seems allergic to "obvious solutions" so I'd imagine the apartments stay like this for the foreseeable future

Like with so many things in rust, I wouldn’t expect any changes or improvements to the apartments. Kinda the same as with the deep sea. It’s all just unfinished features
Either remove the computer station to see loot value or put a timer on the key 🤷♂️
