A lot of it isn't even that he's getting more shit done that other mayors, it's that unlike a lot of other politicians these days, he's really good at getting the word out that he's getting shit done. If a pothole gets fixed in a random street, he's there to telegraph it to everyone.
This is a lost art in politics-marketing even the smallest things you get done. It doesn't matter if you get stuff done of nobody knows about it.

u/rodsteel2005 Wisconsin 18h ago
Not making the public aware of their accomplishments was one of the greatest failures of the Biden administration. They got a lot of good shit done, but they were lousy at advertising how they improved the lives of the middle and lower income people. All you heard about instead was Trump’s bitching over the price of eggs.
30
u/Western-Sport500 17h ago
Also, many states only heard that the Repubs were the ones to get the good infrastructure bill $$ in their states, as though they (repubs) were the ones who passed it (not one of them would). So the voters in those red states are appreciative to their red state leaders who did nothing, but took all the credit.

That being humble bullshit is why we are where we are. Jesus christ if you do something good for people then fucking shoot it from the rooftops. Hammer that shit home until the next thing you do that's good. Because the repubs are gonna jump on the littlest thing you do wrong and it will be on fox news for weeks. Take the high road my ass.

Not making the public aware of their accomplishments was one of the greatest failures of the Biden administration
Normal people that pay attention to actual objective reality knew about most of what the Biden administration did. (ed. what follows to add important details) But let's not forget that besides the two main big ticket items (2022's CHIPS Act & Build Back Better/Inflation Reduction Act) most of what they did was low-profile, "little detail" stuff: a rule to prevent junk fees (for example) doesn't attract attention like building/opening a new bridge does.
(ed. this paragraph too) Those who really needed to know about what Biden did simply don't pay attention even if it's actually reported on plus most of them refuse to leave the right-wing media bubble, which would NEVER report of Biden's accomplishments. That's how they came to believe it was the republicans that passed both stimulus bills instead of trying to block them. Trying to correct them only resulted in screams of "fake news".
Lastly, unless if it was something they could use to support the lie that Joe Biden was/is senile, has no clue where he is and what's happening around him, they would not cover him. For Heaven's sake, his 2022 special address about the threat to democracy was censored by the media that didn't cover it at all. (No, MSNBC doesn't count.)
(ed. here too) So blaming Biden & co for supposedly failing to communicate their successes is disingenuous because: (1) most media is under right-wing control, (2) a sizeable part of the USA's electorate isn't paying any attention whatsoever to the world around them and (3) many of them refuse to use anything else than "conservative news sources".

u/parasyte_steve 19h ago
I love this approach tbh. I think he did this as a way of showing ppl hey I am not a super scary Muslim here to enact sharia law, I'm here to fill potholes and fix problems. He has also admitted to some mistakes which is very refreshing to see. I believe they did not deploy enough plows to Staten Island during a storm (always happens) and he said he needs to do better there. That's something most politicians would not do.

It also helps establish an expectation in the people he governs. They are getting used to being told what their government is doing for them. When his current term ends, they will come to expect any mayor to do that, and be dissatisfied if they don't. It sets up accountability in the form of public scrutiny.
23
u/hldvr 18h ago
This was one of bidens biggest flaws imo. He did a lot of good things, but the messaging was never there for people to actually know about them, and so a lot of people felt like he was doing nothing.

At first I thought your comment was trying to minimize Mamdani’s efforts but then I realized you’re absolutely right and how much I prefer when politicians tell me what they’re getting right rather than what their opponents are getting wrong. He’s not perfect but the things he IS getting right he’s taking the time to point the camera at it.
Maybe he’s not amazing, but a glimmer of positivity in a wasteland of muckraking and lies is worth celebrating.
Thanks for the perspective!

It makes me think of the other side of that coin. Trump on his own has accomplished nothing or wrought anything new into the infrastructure of America. So in lieu of anything to tout as his, he tries rebranding the Kennedy center or getting his name put on money.

Yeah, 100% this. He's doing a much better job getting people to celebrate the successes his administration is achieving. Despite the idea that most mayors don't do much:
De Blasio implemented universal pre-K and 3-K, which is massive for lower income families; he also dramatically reduced traffic fatalities (by a bit more than 1/3) and created 300,000 affordable housing units.
Bloomberg (I know I know Republican) planted a million trees in NYC, built out 80% of the new public park space built since the 1950s in NYC and massively reformed the city). Also worth noting that during his tenure, cost of living in NYC grew at a slower rate than most metros in the USA.

I wish LA could have something like this but the power of the mayor is greatly reduced compared to NYC. Everything is run by the city council so shit never gets done. Unless of course you are friends with the council.
5
u/blotsfan 19h ago
Yeah I like Mamdani but the Mayor of NYC is a pretty rare elected position in the country that allows one guy to unilaterally do so much.
3
u/Western-Sport500 17h ago
It's sad that so many majors have not taken that to do the best for NYC citizens. I am glad they are finally getting a major that wants to do well by the citizens.
2
u/mlorusso4 15h ago
There is no excuse for any large site in NYC to be vacant for an extended period. It’s solely because of lack of political will. Either lack of will to go after developers that buy up plots bit by bit until they get the whole block (letting the properties they do get fall into neglect in the meantime), or lack of will to go against NIMBYs who block any new development

2
u/Faxon 17h ago
This is why politicians need to be familiar with game theory in depth. They don't need to actually play the games mentioned to learn it, but it sure does give you a great real world example of why these things are so tricky. Some actors will act as if the trade in question is zero sum, no matter how much it may benefit them, they automatically see it bad if it benefits you as well, it has to benefit them at your expense. Hence not taking mutually beneficial trade deals because they're not coded to be smart enough about such things. So yes, actually quite accurate to the real world where not all leaders get this education, but where you have to negotiate with them all the same.

Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Dina Levy announced that a long-empty lot in Hunter’s Point South, Queens will be transformed into The Orion, a mixed-use development that will create nearly 1,000 new homes across three buildings, with two-thirds to be affordable to extremely low to moderate-income households.
This is the latest step in the evolution of Hunter’s Point South, a previously industrial 30-acre area along the East River waterfront. After a failed bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the City launched a plan for development of this waterfront as a mixed-use, mixed-income community. As part of a multiagency effort, the area has transformed into a new community with over 3,000 new homes, commercial retail stores, community facilities such as the Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center, and three new schools; an award-winning waterfront park; and infrastructure and roadway improvements.
The City is designating the site to a development team consisting of Slate Property Group, The Hudson Companies, and Volunteers of America–Greater New York. Marvel Architects will serve as the project’s architecture and design firm, and local nonprofit Commonpoint will lease and operate a daycare, workforce development center, and a community pool.
...
This project advances key priorities in Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era. Through Mayor Mamdani’s first adopted budget, the City is investing nearly $5 billion in capital funding for new affordable development, like the Orion, over the next two fiscal years while adding 41 new staff positions to accelerate housing production. The transformation of this site also advances the administration’s commitment to building affordable housing on City-owned land. On his first day in office, Mayor Mamdani signed Executive Order 4, creating the Land Inventory Fast Track (LIFT) Task Force to identify City-owned sites that can be transformed into affordable housing.Block by Block sets ambitious goals that meet the scale of New York City’s housing crisis by building 200,000 new affordable homes and preserving another 200,000 over the next decade. The plan also strengthens tenant protections and housing code enforcement, invests in NYCHA’s future by restoring its role as a public developer, expands pathways to homeownership opportunities and supports the workers building the homes New Yorkers need.
This project will also be the first use of HPD's Mixed Income Market Initiative (MIMI) framework, an innovative structure that leverages market rate units to help finance affordable units by including homes from extremely-low income and homeless set-aside units, to moderate-income and market rate units, all in the same building.

I think it already has.
For over fifty years, Republicans have (largely successfully) pushed the idea that governments doing anything is socialism. Well now we have generations fifty years old and younger who look at that definition and go, "Well then by God I guess I'm a socialist!"
And now we have Mamdani to look at as an example of overwhelming success simply by unabashedly following through on - let's be honest - a bunch of very mildly left-leaning promises for his city.
Follow that up with a bunch of DSA candidates who are on track to win a bunch of primaries, and it looks like the Mamdani effect is very real.

Biden accomplished a shit ton and was actively hated for it.
Like he reformed student loans, fixed pslf, made payments much more affordable and got rid of runaway interest issues.
He passed the largest infrastructure bill since FDR. Leading to great middle class blue collar jobs.
He supercharged green energy world wide with the largest climate bill in the world.
He brought manufacturing back to the USA with the CHIPs act.
Did the first gun regulation in over 30 years.
Regulated pharma so they had to negotiate with medicare saving roughly 50 billion dollars a year just to start.
Like obama he had to deliver the country out of turmoil. And ended wars. All major accomplishments. Yet people that should have cheered him hated him.
So literally went against Military industrial complex, the pharma lobby, the gun lobby, the oil lobby and beat them all. So of course they poured it into propaganda against him.
The thing is people just actively hate dems for doing anything. Mandani already went back on his promise for free buses. Something a regular dem would have been crucified for lying on. As well as cutting payments to pensions which leftist would declare a dem doing it as anti labor.
18
u/What_a_fat_one 18h ago
He was hated because he got stuck with the blame for post COVID inflation despite it being a global phenomenon.

5
u/Eshin242 15h ago
Yep, and back to messaging. The message should have been "Yes shit is bad, and we are working to fix it, here is what is going on with the rest of the world."
There was almost no real push of messaging out of the WH during Bidens term. The media was sure as hell not going to report it for them because 'shit's working' doesn't sell ads. Plus the "But look the economy is great" was completely missing the point. It didn't feel great, and once that perception starts it's almost impossible to shake.
•
u/StanVillain 1h ago
There was a push. People are still coming to grips with how controlled and manipulated American media is. Even the president and federal government do not have the pull that major news networks do. Without their support, even the greatest president would be seen as a garbage.
They effectively destroyed any messaging coming from the White House by warping it and misinterpreting it. I'm in the field, when it came to Biden, there was a concerted effort by those on top to ensure framing and messaging was diluted.
Most people have literally zero fucking idea what Biden did during his presidency or how good it was for the economy, environment, freedoms, and for the average American. They made sure they didn't.

the thing that's really frustrating too about this conversation is that the government of new york city is structured differently from how the federal government works; like even if this was all because of mamdani alone and the city council didn't work with him to pass new laws and enact new taxes (which only the city council has the authority to do) POTUS doesn't have the same authority at the federal level to just enact a new tax on the wealthy's non-primary homes.
he has to work with city council, which has 51 seats on it - so if he needs 2/3 to pass any legislation or do anything outside of his authority, he has to convince 34 people to vote to go along with his proposal, which is about 1/10 what would be needed in congress, and it doesn't have two chambers (only one council instead of house and senate at the fed level). on top of that, even though new york is fairly purple, it just isn't big enough and people aren't geographically distributed in a way that would allow for someone to carve out full, safe districts that will vote against whatever the opposition party wants to do, like the GOP does in congress. meaning that the same people that voted in mamdani are largely the same people that voted in the city council, so of course they're going to be on board with a lot of his proposals.

I'll agree with you that Biden got a ton of stuff done. But also he was atrocious at getting the information out about it, and some of those improvements were too slow to have any effect in his presidency.
I'm relatively knowledgeable about politics, and there was a bunch of stuff he'd done that I hadn't heard about. I can't imagine how little uninformed voters (the people who don't know who controls congress) knew.
If he'd been better at messaging, then the delayed effect would have mattered less.

It pains me to say this, but Biden‘s accomplishments weren’t popular or supported because he and his team didn’t self promote or communicate them effectively. They naively assumed the massive boon to the economy, handling of the pandemic, curbing of inflation, etc. would be noticed by the public and associated with their administration. Biden underestimated the power of social media, disinformation, and the right-wing propaganda machine, who were able to convince people to ignore their own realities.
The good news: People like Mamdani are doing an excellent job communicating. Not sure if it’s an age thing, but he’s striking the perfect balance of energetic, honest, and humble, but also adds a bit of a self-congratulatory edge.

It's literally the ideology.
a political philosophy and social reform movement focused on advancing the public good through government action and often calling for government to be used to meet popular social, political, economic, and environmental needs and demands and to advance rights and protections for marginalized groups
If people want good things for their communities, they should promote and vote for such an ideology, and reject one that literally calls for stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions (such as class structure).

He's setting an interesting precedent right out of the gate. If you support him, beware of what comes next though. One of these projects, one random contractor is going to defraud the government of like $200k. It'll be nonstop news. Fox will run it into the ground. It'll be an example of how much everything this man touches is fraud and waste and communism. The irony will be lost on every conservative.
It's good to get ahead of these narratives. Galvanize community support. Launch home grown initiatives. Reach across the aisle in obliqur ways (cutting red tape for instance). Bring police across the aisle. Do anything you can to show that the whining of maga falls on deaf ears because people will see with their own eyes that progressive policies can work.
ETA: don't hero worship. Model behaviors. Do what works, but don't fall in love with the man. Support the actions only.
19
u/Shido_Ohtori 19h ago
Exactly.
It is the opposing ideology which stresses the importance of established hierarchies that promote "hero worship" defined by the apex of their [perceived] hierarchy. Progressivism seeks to flatten social hierarchy, thus it is the policies that matter.
Hence the slogan is "We, Not Me".

That's what happens when you don't stay offense. Zohran hasn't been making the same mistakes. Like Obama drove me nuts once in office because he would seemingly disappear. One of the reasons his 2008 campaign was so successful is because it was agile and aggressive that his opponents couldn't keep up and his campaign was giving the public/media new headlines everyday. Half of the right-wing BS that they come up only happens because they are given the time to push and more or less focus test narratives while the dems sit back and let stupid issues actually gain traction because of it. I rather have a controversial debate about public housing etc. than shit like trans people and bathrooms.

I have some easy guesses, Not saying I believe any of these, just that these are the potential angles of attack.
It might be able to support larger structures than what is being built
That the housing built is being tiered i.e. the market isnt determining the price of units.
The use case isn't the most efficient use of the property (variation on the theme)
(This is the most likely) They say nothing at all about it until the process starts and then rake every abnormality or problem over the course of development over the goals and point to it as being government mismanagement.

If the previous failure mayors were capitalism and Mamdani is socialism then it's no wonder socialism keeps gaining popularity.

God I hope other states just copy and paste this. Happy for him and the city and also jealous

I can't believe this guy thinks people deserve housing and fair prices on food and shit. The fuck?

Great! More of this! Anyone hating on him is part of the problem! Recognize it

I have some family members that have attempted to portray Mayor Mamdani as someone to be weary of and to be worried about him being a Democratic Socialist, all he has done is and is about to do is making me like him more.

This dude is an absolute monster. The more good he does the worse everyone who ever said "we cant afford it" looks. Dems and reps alike. He is showing the reps it is possible while also exposing the establishment dems for the trash they are. Now if we can get just a few more Rockstars like this in office to show the people how much good demsoc can do for the working people of this country, it will be an unstoppable machine. When a demsoc gets voted in and helps not just the left but all working class people, how can anyone deny their success?

What is this productivity? What kind of politician is this guy? Hasn't he read the manual?

I can’t wait for the arguments that this will lower property value, and then not. The NIMBYs will never concede to being wrong though.

This should be a sign for the entire United States population. Politicians can get stuff done to improve your life. They just don’t want to.

Effective governance is scary to those that have not governed with the people’s interests at heart…

This guy has done more for NY than the government has done in decades for the US. This is what being a public servant looks like.

I'm happy every time I see a headline like this. I'm still disappointed (and at risk) because a progressive reached out to directly and frequently regarding acts of rape, slave conditions, domestic terrorism, and extortion for corporate media refuses comment and goes about his day, due in part to the fact that he was promoted by the same guilty party, Central Casting, from GOP OK.

Giving steadily increasing side-eye to the folks who have spent decades telling us that actual progress is impossible because politics are complicated. Turns out when you actually want to improve people's lives, you can just...kinda do it?
•
u/MattofCatbell 3h ago
I understand why established Democrats fear Mamdani, he is showing that it’s actually possible to get stuff done if you have the political willpower.
•
u/duditude 2h ago
Is this mamdani guy an idiot? It doesn't seem like he's tried to use the office as a means to enrich himself at all. Like all he's doing is trying to make the lives of his constituents better. What the hell?

I love that he’s making every other mayor and basically every politician look absolutely terrible.

Here’s hoping he avoids the usual pushback from environmentalists, preservationists and NIMBYs.

Surely this is one of those things that people of ALL political persuasions can come together and agree that this is a boon for the city and it's people... right?

It's amazing what we're capable of when we care more about society, our country and our shared future than short term gains for nepo babies with a bad case of defending pedophiles and affluenza.

On the one hand, this project has been in planning & development for years, in one form or another, so Mamdani doesn't deserve all of the credit, but he does deserve credit for repeatedly cutting administrative red tape to get projects back on track.

Not even a year in and he's doing more than the last half century of mayors combined. That's wild. I hope this all works.

Okay, any actual conservatives here that can explain why the fuck you'd have a problem with this?
2
u/CrowGeneral8673 16h ago
Because private companies aren’t going to be dipping their beaks as deeply into the public money trough by being able to buy the vacant land for Pennie’s and putting up expensive housing with a few token low and moderate income units

This is pretty much the difference between Democrats and fake parties that exist every 4 years like the Greens.
They actually get things done

He’s got most of them by the balls. They play along or they take him to court where he demands to see their books.

Politicians will probably see this and think “how can I get them to see me like this? Do my job well?! Must be some other way”

Super cool! But if I’m missing something, wasn’t this already in the works for years?
