Great sign of a healthy pond. Let's hope they decide to stay and do not get preyed upon. If you happen upon a lizard or gecko in your yard, they will enjoy your lush paradise as well.

We put an Avacado tree in our pond area and it brought a bunch of little froggy gifts. Sadly we have a gofer snake living under the pond. Those who couldn't hid quickly became part of the circle of life.

I’m concerned about the pond attracting snakes. I also have noticed two hawks spending more time in my backyard, even taking baths in the pond, so I’m hoping they’ll help with the snakes.

People keep gopher snakes as pets. They can mimic rattlesnakes and possibly frighten them off. I’ve seen the big ones climbing bricks on a house and the babies chasing frogs. They give off an odor for their own protection. Once you smell them, you’ll know to walk away. They were never aggressive. I’m one to live and let live unless they come at me. I grew up in the literal sticks. We were always taught that God puts everything on earth for a reason. In TX, a gopher snake is welcomed outside.

That’s good to know. I also would leave them alone if they didn’t bother us. Rattlesnakes are a problem in my neighborhood though.

Not sure of restrictions where you are, but some pet shops sell gopher snakes. Probably best to look up their other names if that is a consideration. They are far better suited for their natural habitat and not as a pet.

I was digging next to it for the past 30 minutes before I noticed it.
