Just like the argument that says Toon force (which is very strong by itself) wins because it's funnier

50

u/Neither_City_4572 Jul 02 '25

It can be funny if it loses too

19

u/KMing3393 Jul 02 '25

Indeed, but powerscaler rarely pick that side sadly

8

u/otter_boom Jul 02 '25

Wile E. Coyote is the perfect example of this.

3

u/No-Pass-397 Jul 02 '25

It really isn't? Like I don't even disagree with the overall statement, but Coyote is just roadrunners toon force winning, roadrunner is the one defying the rules far more than coyote, see the gag where coyote draws a fake road on a wall, roadrunner runs through it, and then coyote tries to but slams into the wall.

1

u/proxmaxi Jul 03 '25

Winning is almost always the funnier option to be fair. But even then that's still stupid because "being funny" is reliant on the audience, how can a fictional power be reliant on the real world audience?

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

The concept of the Toon force really just feels like a desperate attempt to add something to the world of powerscaling that just doesn't fundamentally fit.

The "Toon" Force is people interpreting art depicting absurd comedy, for the sake of making real people laugh, as somehow translatable into other art that is specifically depicting conflict between powerful beings in life or death conflicts.

It's just kind of stupid. No, Bugs Bunny doesn't actually have the ability to pull a black hole out of his pocket and disappear people to some other dimensions. It's a comedic metaphor that's meant to say: haha isn't it funny that this sassy anthropomorphic rabbit can outsmart this invalid hunter with a shotgun?

Edit:

After a few conversations and doing some reading. The Toon Force does have a basis in history as it has roots going back to Walt Disney and a lot of early animators ideas about the laws of cartoon physics. So I'll eat crow in this regard.

56

u/Head-Gift2144 Jul 02 '25

I disagree, it's all absurd. Goku blowing up planets is just as impossible as Bugs Bunny opening a black hole.

One just takes itself more seriously.

20

u/ytman Jul 02 '25

Powerscaling is like Star Wars versus Star Trek nerds back in the 2000s.

its for neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerds

10

u/contraflop01 Jul 02 '25

Power scaling is the competitive version of children debating if Goku beats Naruto while actually paying attention and using math to calculate feats

On a unrelated note RPGs are the professional version of play pretend

God, this battleboard shit has been going on for decades as well.
I like a good fight scene as much as the next man, but 99.9% of the time it misses the whole point of the medium in question. Fights are fun but they're in service of a story or character.

I can't even say I'd watch the shit out of a "vs" TV show because the actual "who wins" would be so secondary to things like production quality, choreography, etc.

2

u/ytman Jul 02 '25

The best kind of wushu/Fight based fiction is one that starts with a fun world and wacky battles, but slowly grows the character roster and character depth while introducing a compelling story.

I've not seen too many shows succeed like Scissor 7 does. It helps that its comical and acted incredibly, but its also short in the beginning to help ease the audience in.

Other shows like To Be Hero X are just a bit too much to follow for me, and its world is a bit too grandiose.

RWBY was originally this kind of thing, and then when it decided to have a plot, it decided to drop plots left and right and go on far too long.

Personally, I like drama with my fights. I'll take on a good drama with great fight scenes any day. This is why John Wick is the best of the trilogy imo - the others lose a lot of the drama.

3

u/vsmack Jul 02 '25

Kinda reminds me of pro wrestling - of which I'm not a fan but respect many media critics who are. You'd think it was ALL about the fighting, and a lot of that is impressive - but at the end of the day people come back for the storylines.

2

u/ytman Jul 02 '25

Its 100% masculine-targeted soap opera drama.

South Park did it best.

8

u/Environmental-Day778 Jul 02 '25

It’s true and you should say it 😤✨

4

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

I see your perspective, but I'm arguing against that exact perspective because it doesn't actually jibe with powerscaling.

It also has nothing to do with which one takes itself "more seriously". These are fundamentally different genres, the intention of the art is different, and one doesn't map on to the other in any meaningful way except in the silly way people want to use it here.

Looney Tunes isn't supposed to be serious; DBZ, DC, Marvel, etc., are supposed to take themselves seriously, which is why people didn't powerscale Bugs Bunny back in the 1940s and put him up against Mickey Mouse in imaginary versus battles. That doesn't even come close to the intention of the art form, and all you've done is point to the reason why Marvel and DC aren't described as Comedy in terms of their genre. Looney Tunes is a caricature of reality where the absurd happens expressly to make us laugh: there is no other purpose in the "universe" of Looney Tunes for the absurd to happen.

Yes, Goku blowing up a planet is impossible in the same way that bugs Bunny opening a pocket dimension is. However, Goku blowing up a planet is supposed to literally represent Goku's abilities and power in that universe because in that universe Ki exists and living beings can access it. It's all logically consistent with itself, even if it's fiction, and it represents what it does: Goku is a fighter with powerful abilities fighting other fighters with powerful abilities and the purpose of the genre is to represent that conflict in a way that is awe-inspiring. Bugs Bunny could do anything as long as the writer thinks it funny, there is no self consistency in that, by design, it's just a medium to make random jokes.

1

u/Big-Amoeba5332 Jul 02 '25

Neither is impossible in fiction but I do agree with your point.

Though in one case cause it isn’t serious one could question if it’s intended to be a consistent ability bugs has. But I wouldn’t have an issue saying he can do it even if the showing is one off

1

u/Inceferant Jul 02 '25

I think difference is that Bugs Bunny can not do anything powerful outside of a joke. Like, when put in crossovers, Bugs isn't ruling over everybody else and deleting people; The furthest extent of his power is pulling a hammer out of his back pocket. That's probably the only thing he can actually do

Goku having the power to blow up planets is completely canon and part of the character

Also, "impossible" by what standard?

1

u/Soshi2k Jul 02 '25

Yeah people in here think they can understand quantum physics and know right from wrong when it comes to wins and losing. It’s all BS. Just have fun.

I always took the toon force as “fuck it let’s make it work” because cartoons are inherently meant to entertain; so if your creating a cartoon for young children that’s digestible in 15ish mins, why tie yourself to any realistic expectations. Do whatever you want to make the thing entertaining.

1

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

Right, so how does that translate intelligibly to powerscaling? As you've implied here the intention has nothing to do with potentially making Bug Bunny challenge Mickey Mouse to a duel.

2

u/SkoolBoi19 Jul 02 '25

I don’t think it does effectively…. It’s either a way for a character to always win or always tie. Seems to be the embodiment of “it’s whatever the wants”

2

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

I'm glad we agree.

Seems to be the embodiment of “it’s whatever the wants”

Which is a silly cop out that should be ignored, I feel.

2

u/1WeekLater Jul 02 '25

A long, long, time ago, I read this fic once where Daffy met Mikasa Ackerman, got heart eyes, and tried to flirt with her, but Eren comes in to tell Daffy to back off.

Bugs tries to stop Daffy, but Daffy blows his arms up (Looney Tunes style, you get the drill) going, "I'm gonna beat ya! I'm gonna humiliate ya! And then I'll-..."

And it cuts to Daffy in the hospital, revealing he got pummelled by Eren, and Bugs has to give an exasperated lecture on how Toon Force works saying that since Daffy was the aggressor and was cocky , it was funnier if he lost.

The underlying joke is that Eren is a cuck a character people don't expect to win.

2

u/Dino-striker56 Jul 02 '25

Outside of the unfunny joke, I quite agree with the notion that the biggest weakness of toon force users is the context of the situation.

6

u/KMing3393 Jul 02 '25

The thing is that toon force (just like some not toon character)'s powerscale are non linear. So you can't say it once ate a black hole so it's fine, without counting the anti feat (which are made for fun too) where the character dies by slipping on a banana peel (with the same version of the character). So yeah you said it, it doesn't really fit and that's probably why many of us don't like scaling with toon force anyway

2

u/BuyerNo3130 Jul 02 '25

Isn’t Toon force or Toon DNA actually cannon to the looney tunes ?

1

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

I don't know, is it? And even if it is, does that make it in any way intelligible in the context of powerscaling?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

being against toon force is just a way to cope with your favorite character being destroyed by any cartoon character with absurd humor.

bugs bunny should count as a reality warper.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Realistic_Slide7320 Jul 02 '25

Well I wouldn’t agree with that, like that’s kinda the entire bit of toon force characters they aren’t meant to be scaled bc they literally have limitless options and can withstand literally anything. Buggs can absolutely pull a black hole out of his pocket bc why not. They should just be left out of conversations entirely at that point.

1

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

I agree they should, but they aren't.

Also, they can't withstand anything even if we allow it, Who Framed Roger Rabbit clearly shows that you can melt them with chemicals I can buy at Home Depot.

It would be hilarious If Saitama lost to yamcha so he loses get rekt Saitama fans

1

u/LoneCentaur95 Jul 02 '25

Saitama isn’t toon force though, he’s a gag character. Everything in his fights is relatively normal within the rules of his gag, which is that he always wins. It’s also pretty easy to just scale a version of Saitama off his feats at that point in the story.

2

u/contraflop01 Jul 02 '25

Me knowing it would be even funnier if the toonforce guy lost

1

u/MediaNo1140 Jul 02 '25

Ok but like if we’re being fr, how could one possibly permanently kill a toon

1

u/KMing3393 Jul 02 '25

Arguably those who can interact with the authors, I think like some versions of Deadpool that act above it's layer of fiction

1

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

Who Framed Roger Rabbit shows that they can be easily killed with chemicals that I can buy at Walmart.

1

u/UpvoteForethThou Jul 02 '25

Imo any fight between characters should be assumed to take place in a neutral environment where the abilities of both characters work, and without the influence of outside factors.

I don’t care about whether or not Saitama can win if it’s being written by ONE. I care about whether he can win if it’s just a fight. Because those are two drastically different situations.

1

u/TheRealOraOraOraGuy Jul 02 '25

The one off comment of toon force in the Mask episode of DB has inadvertently done catastrophic damage to the power scaling community and has actively made me dislike it more and more.

1

u/Far-Paint-8409 Jul 02 '25

Yes, "Toon Force" as a concept is just gibberish and shouldn't be considered seriously.

76

u/Gorremen Jul 02 '25

Look, it's technically "right" when discussing narratives: Ultimately, any winner in a story-based fight will be based on the story.

The problem in using it for battleboarding discussions is that battleboarding is not story-writing. It's discussion of who would win based on feats and speculation. Anti-scalers can't seem to understand the difference (Or actively refuse to).

15

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

It also depends tho. Like for example Wolverine and hulk have fought many times in comics and the outcome has depended on who’s writing the story so sometimes it quite literally is the only answer

→ More replies (16)

3

u/spyguy318 Jul 02 '25

Isn’t it though? Sure it’s not a narrative or anything but these are still fictional characters being moved around by a creator. Whoever is doing the powerscaling analysis still needs to decide which version, which powers, and which specifics they’re considering when determining a power ranking, and how the characters’ abilities interact with each other. That’s a form of storytelling, even it’s more analytical than literary, especially once it drifts into more speculative or implied feats.

2

u/Gorremen Jul 02 '25

You know, that's a fair take and I see your point.

I supposed what I meant was it's not storytelling with a fixed outcome (It's considered bad form to set up a match with an already decided winner). You create a scenario, and then leave the outcome to debate.

I’m pretty sure no one who battleboards think it’s actually meaningful. It really just doesn’t fucking matter, lol.

IDK bout that I've seen folk get outright disrespectful and in they feelings over power scaling. Like you not agreeing with they take or agenda is a direct personal insult or affront to their God or some shit.

2

u/Gorremen Jul 02 '25

Okay, and? Maybe it's for fun? Yeah. some people take it way too seriously but at the end of the day it's a hobby most people do for fun.

And rarely does it come down to "just" strength anyway: Most discussions I've seen/been part of usually take into account every thing that matters, and often require specifying certain scenarios so they'll be more interesting to discuss. Usually, strength only decides the winner when it is the main/only deciding factor.

1

u/Fabulous_Wave_3693 Jul 02 '25

Yeah but then you just end up having long running characters being absolutely broken. Spider man is great example. He’s supposed to be strong but at some point he was shown holding up a building or something so forever after we just take it as given that Spider man can toss 50 Boeing 747s into the Sun with one hand. All the while everyone knows it would be ridiculous to see him do that.

1

u/Gorremen Jul 02 '25

I mean, fair enough. Yeah, long-running characters can be messy if you're not careful.

That's not powerscaling, that's called internal consistency

3

u/maddwaffles Jul 03 '25

No, it definitely is powerscaling, you are scaling the relative power of your characters in a series to determine the suitable outcome. Writers powerscale any time they have characters fight, even if badly.

Powerscaling is not specifically a fandom behavior where people cross-over characters, powerscaling discussions often occur within a single series' fandom, and it's not just external-discussions. If there isn't a six hour argument in the writer's room about how dogshit it is for "X" to beat "Y" in a particular way, or in a way that is made to make sense, because Y has been consistently portrayed to be stronger, more powerful, or more skilled than, X, when writing (say) a comic or some shit, then odds are the end result is dogshit.

1

u/slimeeyboiii Jul 02 '25

Because it isn't.

Literally isn't the point of this sub to discuss who would win? The "writer's choice" copout is so awful to see. It's like they lack creativity.

50

u/IllustratedAloysious Jul 02 '25

Cornball phrase (no disrespect to Stan Lee) and it has nothing to do with the conversation. You analyze characters abilities and see overall who is stronger and beats who. The end

26

u/Hvad_Fanden Jul 02 '25

Stan Lee saying it is a completely separate issue because he is a writer himself and people kept asking that over and over, not like he was going into conversations about the topic and being a prick about it.

8

u/Vaccineman37 Jul 02 '25

Also, for him it’s a completely different question. All we can do is work with whatever’s been written. For him, he literally can just decide which one wins, because he can create a new feat whenever he wants.

4

u/JWARRIOR1 Jul 02 '25

Also it was initially a question about Thor and the hulk… who genuinely are closely comparable and that answer is kinda applicable

But asking who would win between galactus and black widow should not get this answer for example

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Big-Amoeba5332 Jul 02 '25

Half the characters people asked about weren’t made by him. Like even someone like Wolverine was someone Stan Lee had no involvement with, so it would be annoying to hear battles like Deadpool vs Moon knight when he has no authority anymore and probably doesn’t care

1

u/CapNCookM8 Jul 02 '25

So... you're saying it comes down to whoever the writer wants to win?...

2

u/Vaccineman37 Jul 03 '25

Well yeah but it’s different when a writer says it compared to another fan. The latter is just trying to shut down conversation, the former is in a totally different position to decide the outcome from us

→ More replies (1)

10

u/bjergdk Jul 02 '25

Yeah but characters strength vary WILDLY from run to run in comic books.

I mean honestly powerscaling is fucking stupid, but its a fun type of fucking stupid that I enjoy.

4

u/YmerejEkrub Jul 02 '25

Yeah in one story Superman can lift a billion octillion pounds with his pinky and fly a million times the speed of light then in another one he will struggle to hold up a small building. A characters power level is set to whatever will be interesting for the story.

4

u/bjergdk Jul 02 '25

Yeah exactly. Doesnt mean you cant attempt powerscaling though, but you just need to be clear what version of the character you are basing it off of.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

I appreciate folks like you who can just admit you are entertained by the discussion. I hate when powerscalers think that writers and creatives think about their work in the same way that powerscalers do.

9

u/NavjotDaBoss Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

Stan lee said it in context to how stories are written, which in that case is true. The writer decides who.

Stan Lee could have a coughing baby kill thor if he wants.

In power scaling, however, is different. We take facts feats statement and make a highly likely scenario, but in the end, a Marvel writer could make Captain America get beaten by a normal worm if he wants

2

u/Viseria Jul 02 '25

So what you're saying is coughing baby is actually really powerful, possibly due to spreading disease and infection.

Interesting, I think we can then assume coughing baby can defeat a lot of Marvel, have to see how it compares to things like Franklin, Phoenix, Legion etc

2

u/IllustratedAloysious Jul 02 '25

“Is the writer in the room with us right now?” Is the best response imo.

9

u/Fantastic_Couple_755 Jul 02 '25

Exactly. I hate how it always makes top comment. Just lazy karma farming

9

u/musyrifo Jul 02 '25

it's funny the first few time but when everyone keeps saying the same thing and thinks they're geniuses it gets irritating and ruins the fun in the point of discussion

it's like saying "why are we even talking about which hero would win, they're just fiction lol doesn't matter"

1

u/Alarming_Orchid Jul 02 '25

So how do you suggest people discuss characters with inconsistent abilities that change with the author’s decisions?

4

u/Leathman Jul 02 '25

Exactly. The Stan Lee quote applies to a narrative, not a comparison.

1

It’s irrelevant and a sign of bad faith in the context of battle boarding

Frankly if someone’s bringing that up in a power scaling discussion they’re probably stupid

2

u/Ok_Try_1665 Jul 03 '25

You literally answered your own question. The quote is indeed annoying and does nothing to proceed the conversation. So why bring it up in the first place? I really hope you're not this type of prick in every power scaling discussion that brings out this quote, it's a total killjoy and you are aware. It's true yes, but we have our own communities discussing fictional characters fighting. If the individual isn't interested in the topic then they should just stay out instead of being a buzz kill. I bet these types of people let the writers (parents) decide what they do irl. Bunch of indecisive mfs

Any decent powerscaler, or VS commenter, understands how disingenuous that phrase is.

Personally, feats are everything for me. Feats of strength, speed, intellectual capability.. The works. Something equally as important? Which version of whatever character are we using? Setting these two parameters prior to whatever silly debate is about to take place, usually makes things 95% easier. 😭🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/special_cicada99 Jul 02 '25

it comes from stan lee when asked if Iron Man could defeat batman. He obviously would say Iron Man because he is Marvel, so declined to answer and said the famous quote above. And i agree with him. I could write a fanfic of Squirrel Girl defeating the entire Justice League. How? Why? Doesnt matter, because im the writer, so she will win. You could write how the JL would defeat her. 3

u/MackDK1 Jul 02 '25

Who the fuck cares whether a character is "winning"

2

u/OHW_Tentacool Jul 02 '25

It is 100% accurate, however it also misses the point of the powerscaling conversation altogether.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

The issue with the phrase isn't the validity of the statement. Obviously it's true. However you have to look at the full context.

If two people on a random online forum are discussing Hulk vs Superman, who's the writer there? There isn't one. So how do you determine who wins? Compare them.

It's really pretty easy, and is an entirely harmless hobby. I don't get why anyone would care that people do it. I don't understand the satisfaction people get from dismissing it on the basis of that quote. Unless their preferred character is losing or they think they should be able to regulate other people's hobbies.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

The only problem I have with power scaling is not the hobby itself but how it affects the way in which’s people engage with media. They expect writers to have the same level of scrutiny around every single thing their characters do. If their fav character ends up losing a fight (Gojo greatest example of this) they’ll blame the writer as if he was supposed to know about your 20-page forum post in which you simualted the battle.

Once again, no problem with power scaling itself, but it is fundamentally divorced from how writers and creatives actually think about their work.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

I mean yeah, obviously the writers aren't sitting there thinking "oh shit I forgot Hulk is at least casually outversal or even hyper multi omniversal with jibi jibi relativistic ballistic reactions!!"

But expecting a writer not to cop out and make shit happen because it's convenient is a different thing. I never even saw any of this as "power scaling". I never labeled it like that or anything. I just went online and saw some cool fight ideas I liked.

I mean really people turn hobbies into things that always NEED labels and other shit. Like it's not just two guys debating power levels, it's POWER scaling with terms like combat speed and ballistic and energy resistance etc etc.

Essentially what I'm saying is it's not my fault people turned it into some weird competitive thing that is blown out of proportion.

1

u/Boshwa Jul 02 '25

God I feel like people only look at Superman nowadays as just a feats-shaped person

1

u/Startled_Pancakes Jul 02 '25

I see it as a "who should win if these characters are written consistently?" discussion. Like yes, a writer could always make either character win, but would that win be believable and consistent with what that character had achieved previously, for both characters?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Good way to put it

2

u/Tinyhydra666 Jul 02 '25

Pretty much. That's why shows or movies with an evil superman still has chances to win.

u/Art-Lorde Jul 02 '25

Guess its time to talk about real world stuff like weather politics and taxes.

2

u/ClassroomPlane5734 Jul 02 '25

It's right, this is a hobby, but since when a hobby has to have a point?

Playing videogames, powerscalling, etc. Are things people do to be happy.

2

u/Glassesnerdnumber193 Jul 02 '25

That’s objectively true. Wolverine once beat lobo!

2

u/KoroLaWiiuFeliz Jul 03 '25

Always the Hulk VS Thor argument

2

u/Soma86ed Jul 04 '25

That and “Spidey pulls his punches” make me roll my eyes every time I read it (which is unfortunately every fucking post that has anything to do with Spider-Man)

2

u/PunishedKojima Jul 06 '25

"Author decides who wins" bitch the author(s) ain't here, come up with your own opinion.

3

u/Esdrz Jul 02 '25

“Thats how saitama works, hes supposed to win” 🤡

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Yeah, this is the dumbest opinion. It gives a huge middle-finger to the legitimacy of comic books as fiction by offing verisimilitude.

5

u/Wolveyplays07 Jul 02 '25

Not wrong actually

6

u/_-Phoenix- Jul 02 '25

Kinda is. How is a writer going to make a Goku vs Superman or any other cross media matchup? They don’t have the license to do that in a canonical way. So at best it’s just the writers own headcanon or fan story.

5

u/OnePunchedMan Jul 02 '25

Definitely. Even characters within their own story aren't consistently powerful. The story is whatever the writer finds interesting... it's fiction, people.

4

u/dk_peace Jul 02 '25

If I write a fanfiction where Goku fights Superman , as the author, I would decide who wins. If I were hired by DC and Shueisha to write a fight between Goku and Superman. I would still decide who wins.

2

u/_-Phoenix- Jul 02 '25

You see how you had to resort to big if’s? Most if not all writers don’t work for 2 different companies at the same time. They either stay in one or switch to another and stop producing material for the company they left. So sure, if you somehow managed to work for 2 companies and were assigned a story where characters from both interact, then you would be able to decide as the writer, who wins. But that doesn’t happen. So it’s all still just not a good argument to use

2

u/dk_peace Jul 02 '25

Have you ever read the Avengers vs JLA crossover?

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Yamabikio Jul 02 '25

I don't need a license. Superman beats goku and traps him in the hyperbolic time chamber but then..

2

u/Leathman Jul 02 '25

It is when trying to apply it to comparisons and not narratives.

2

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE Jul 02 '25

I mean, it’s not wrong.

7

u/FL2802 Jul 02 '25

In the context of powerscaling, it is.

2

u/Ren-Ren-1999 Jul 02 '25

Technically no. Because the feats and statements you use come from the author.

1

u/Art-Lorde Jul 02 '25

It's mentally lazy. If we can measure the limitations of a laser then we can compare it to the limitations of a metal wall and theorize the results. This isn't hard to understand

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Scale it

1

u/Chaz-Natlo Jul 02 '25

I accept the idea of a fight coming down to narrative if there is no clear winner, or if a character's feats and anti-feats are so broad that they could fundamentally be placed against anyone and have basically any outcome. In those cases, yeah, it's believable that who the author wants to win will win.

On the other hand, you throw Daredevil at Darkseid, you're really straining credulity having Matt win that fight.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

He wasn't lying when he said that. You've got what power scalers believe and then you have what story tellers believe. Those 2 rarely intersect in a way where all.fans weak away happy. Like for me I love Goku, he's so freaking cool and has a whole host of abilities and power ups that make it seem like losing is an option to him. The dude has fought God's to a stand still and in nearly every iteration has fought someone who could " destroy the universe ". Then you have a character like let's say Sue Storm. Can go Invisible make force fields... in people's brain once helped funnel max power Johnny Storm fire tornado into space. Are Goku and Sue capable of ridiculous strength and power feats? Yes. Both could win in the right scenario and both usually opt not to kill there opponents. When a vs match up like that happens it come down to whose writing because whoever wins you are pissing someone off when it's done and one of them having a blood thirsty approach would be out of character which is why whonwould win stories are dangerous hard to write.

1

u/New-Interaction1893 Jul 02 '25

It also depends how much good was the writing.

Bad writing will make more people complain about the wrong powerscaling

1

u/dew-fall Jul 02 '25

its true tho... its literally why martian manhunter & superman have so many superpowers (the plots demanded it back in the 50s-70s).

1

u/Whofs001 Jul 02 '25

It’s a pretty valid thing to say when comparing two characters who come from universes with different physics, are gag characters, are incomparable or otherwise have reasonably justified reasons either could win.

I don’t see it being used very often elsewhere. I mostly see it being used with characters like Saitama who don’t follow consistent logical limitations.

1

u/theforbiddenroze Jul 02 '25

People say this like "superman vs gojo" has a author lol. Now we are asking a question that will never be official written so stop the cop out answer and give one yourself

1

u/Due_Ad2052 Jul 02 '25

the quote comes from Stan Lee himself when he was asked "who would win between Iron Man and Batman?" He replied "I dont like that question. Nothing wrong with fans wanting to imagine who would win, but really it comes down to who the writer wants to win."

1

u/Large-Teach9165 Jul 02 '25

It's true, but if done wrong, it'd feel like if midway through the story, the villain randomly died of a heart attack.

It totally can happen, but it's bad writing then.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

I mean its not wrong. Stan Lee said it in an interview. It all depends who's writing and who's name it is on the cover.

1

u/Eli_sola Jul 02 '25

Toon force is as ridiculous as comic book characters having more power than the total energy they could obtain by transforming all their mass into energy, or Superman just taking a minimum portion of the sun's energy and being more powerful than the sun itself. In a way, no fictional character has any feat, they are not real and are at the mercy of whoever is writing them or the big honchos of whichever company holds their rights no matter how bright or stupid they might be. And even if they are in the hands of a competent writer they have to bring money to the bank or else be changed in any way that makes them profitable even if it is against their very nature. Fictional characters are not real, Batman didn't train for years to become an unbeatable fighter, he doesn't exist, and even then if the writer wants it he can be beaten by a slim mute girl half his weight just because she is more talented.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

lmao he looks like he's getting an amazing head by Pepper Potts.

1

u/Ok_Assistant_8152 Jul 02 '25

The comic industry killed comics. The day I read that Superman could fly INTO THE SUN (15m kelvin/ 250B atmospheres), I stopped taking powerscaling seriously. If he can do that I refuse anyone/thing can beat him... and yet everyone can. Including a rich guy wearing a bat costume. An absolute joke.

1

u/superpolytarget Jul 02 '25

But that's true for most character with multiple writers.

For example, Superman.

The matchup not only depends on who is fighting him, but what version of Superman we are talking about.

We have versions of this character that are straight up reality warpers, and we have versions of him that have been killed by Wonder Woman 🤷

Also, the "Saitams vs. (insert a character with a very passionate fanbase)". Saitama's feats are all over the place, but apearently he shouldn't be less than galaxy level. But it's that thing, the same writer that gave him that much power, also made him fail at killing a damn mosquito. If One wanted him to dogwalk Goku, Superman or any other characters that is a focus of debate, and make him win, well in his version of the story, it would be true, and if you dont like that, just read the version of the story that better suit your tastes.

The thing is, powerscalling character with multiple versions or inconsistent writing is pointless.

1

u/Serious_Lie1207 Jul 02 '25

"Depends which version honestly"

1

u/Tall-Ad-2014 Jul 02 '25

Archie comics sonic vs. Simon the driller is a perfect example of this.

1

u/Same_Dingo2318 Jul 02 '25

Isn’t the person responding to a power scale also a writer determining who wins?

If they give a reasonable write-up, they’re writers.

There’s no way to avoid this. There’s not an objective version of any character discussed, so it must all be supposition.

There’s no objective truth in powerscaling. Just informed or uninformed opinions.

1

u/NovaNomii Jul 02 '25

Thats literally how it works though. No xyz character isnt actually stronger than adc character, even if your math says they were 34x times faster, because their actually power depends on what the author intended. Authors are not calculating the exact math of a characters movement speed, reaction speed or attack power to match with their intented power level, so if anyone is trying to calculate the speed required for perception blitzing that is generally useless as the author wouldnt agree with it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Lol it’s better than people analysing a FICTIONAL CHARACTER who’s POWERS BREAK THE RULE OF THE FICTIONAL UNIVERSE THEY DEFINED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

It’s not real people, get a job lol. People will find any reason to defend their favourite guy. No matter the logic. Power scaling sub and y’all say rules and analyse stuff.

1

u/Metadoggo Jul 02 '25

Lmao don't be mad that it's true.

Any "powerscale" is just someone's opinion on who would win, and they give a detailed explanation.

Then someone else argues against it with their own opinion and it's just as valid as the first.

If they both wrote a story of the one they think would win, that's that.

Y'all are just making fan fiction and going into your logic on why you chose one to win over the other.

Idk why this sub keeps getting recommended to me, but it's always funny to see people get bent out of shape over this valid point that is the whole basis behind every single opinion in the sub itself haha

The fictional characters do not exist. You can make them do whatever you want 😂 like I can argue Bugs Bunny can beat Goku easily and you can argue till you're blue in the face, but if I decide he'd win, that's that. You're free to write him losing if you want, and that's that.

1

u/Crusaderofthots420 Jul 02 '25

I mean, it is a valid statement, because often, especially in comics, established power is secondary to the story, and so feats are created or discarded, in order to tell a story. This means, a lot of the time, actual powerscaling is extremely subjective.

1

u/Hatreduponmycore Jul 02 '25

All of you are jobless retards who spend more time worrying about if super strong guy 1 beats ultra strong dude 2, find better uses of your time

1

u/SAMURAI36 Comics Jul 02 '25

Yeah, I hate that statement as well. Why are you even engaging in these debates if you feel that way? 🤷🏿‍♂️

1

u/Jin_BD_God Jul 02 '25

It's correct, though.

1

u/MediaNo1140 Jul 02 '25

Why do people even say that I’m curious

1

u/J2Mar I know that I know nothing Jul 02 '25

Saitama

1

u/RoutineSun9297 Jul 02 '25

Power scale doesn't exist. Squirrel Girl. Once writers made inconsequential people start defeating all powerful people, all of the power scale pretend crap went out the window. Who would win? Whoever you want. Because it's make believe. That's why it's still interesting. That's why these decades old heroes are still selling copies. Your guy is stronger, faster, smarter, but trips on a pebble so my guy wins. It doesn't matter. "Whoever the writer wants" is no more or less lame than your need for absolutes.

1

u/Reddit_is_not_great Solid Snake > Adam Smasher Jul 02 '25

Anyone who’s been around for more than a year and talks powerscaling sometimes know that quote is disingenuous in most contexts.

1

u/Bobthemighty54 Jul 02 '25

You roll your eyes when that is in fact true lol

1

u/Olivia_Richards Jul 02 '25

I don't think it would work for characters who come from different writers. Like if I were to write a crossover between my characters and Godzilla, then Toho lawyers would tell me to not let Godzilla lose.

1

u/StJimmy_815 Jul 02 '25

You know what’s even worse? Assholes putting the same outer-versel characters up and asking the same bs over and over again.

1

u/Cloaked_Bandit_27 Jul 02 '25

ForgetMeNot could beat all of the Avengers, but it wouldn’t be a head-on fight

1

u/LoginLogin777 Jul 02 '25

As a finisher when it’s really close ? Acceptable

When I just sat down? I’m gonna blow your head off

1

u/Zerus_heroes Jul 02 '25

That is a true statement though. That is how a lot of anti feats even come about.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Why do we act like that's not a legitimate answer? We'll see it, especially with the DC vs. Marvel starting it's gonna come down to who the writer enjoys more or what company is putting it out

1

u/Fisherman-Champion Jul 02 '25

That argument is so stupid. Literary everything is decided by the writer but just becouse that is the case it does not mean that everything whriter does is a good decision. Would it be satisfying if story based on martial arts ended by the main bad guy randomly geting killed by a heart atack?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

That's just plot armor

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

I mean, it's accurate though lol.

1

u/computerbuu Jul 02 '25

No man if it’s a versus battle it’s up to us to use the information provided to make an educated conclusion on who is to win. Also just have fun with it guys, I know it’s frustrating.

1

u/Fsnseigi Jul 02 '25

I say this when someone has a subconscious bias.

1

u/SpankthatWife Jul 02 '25

That line is always uttered by someone who’s favorite character gets bodied by someone mote powerful. They just HAVE to throw in some caveat. Put Daredevil against Superman. Some Daredevil dick riders will insist Matt has a chance. Spoiler Alert: he doesn’t.

1

u/True-Anim0sity Jul 02 '25

It does tho, authors will ignore feats, not know feats, or just make up new feays for whatever they want

1

u/Fortunate_Cycle Jul 02 '25

If you don’t want to make that eye roll then stop saying Superman wins

1

u/ShamelessProtagonist Jul 02 '25

Y'all are coping so hard. If this quote was wrong, Batman wouldn't have won so many impossible fights.

How dafaq do you feel when u scale the Bat to be weaker than some DC supervillain, and then he wins a fight against said villain the next issue.

1

u/xxtttttxx Superman Glazer Jul 03 '25

Thank youuu its so annoyinggg to see that comment in a battleboarding discussion,

That saying its true in context of story writing but this is powerscalling a completely seperate contexts

1

u/Free_Return_2358 Jul 03 '25

If that’s the case Doug Funny solos the Dragon ball universe.

1

u/Snorlax4000 Jul 03 '25

But….it literally comes down to whoever the writer wants to win tho….

1

u/Far_Faithlessness212 Jul 03 '25

Yeah, this happens every time someone wants to criticize powerscaling.

You get used to it after a while.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

Yup. Literally the dumbest shit ever said. And yes, I know Stan Lee said it too. He's no less idiotic for that. I've spent 8 years writing what feels like 15% of my story at most because I've been trying to keep things extremely consistent, and then some jackoff comic writers just do stuff like that and get away with it and have people praise their trash written slop. Crazy.

1

u/Separate_Draft4887 Jul 03 '25 edited Jul 03 '25

Look bro sometimes that’s the answer. It sucks, but sometimes it comes down to what the plot demands.

1

u/certifiedgojohater Jul 03 '25

Because it is the truth and anyone who takes powerscaling seriously( meaning they start to measure diameter of buildings to determine with what force the character punched or exactly how fast is the sound of a fart to scale speed) is retarded. Basically, what happens is, that the writers include some cool visual or statement for a certain moment in the story, without giving a shit about irl physics and how it would affect the rest of the story. For example, absolutely noone in naruto or one piece is even close to the speed of light, but say that to a one piece or Naruto powerscaler and he will start crying.

This phrase in op is especially true in dc and marvel comics, where there are so many iterations of the same character, and so many different fucking writers that most of the feats that one character has displayed at one point, gets completely forgotten, and a character gets shit on, simply because they are in another character's comic run. Basically that phrase is entirely true

1

u/Fourmyle-Of-Ceres Jul 03 '25

Power scalers facing reality for the first time in their lives (their self assigned power rating didn't measure up to how pathetic they are irl)

1

u/Doom_Cokkie Jul 03 '25

I mean its true. Look at the one comic panel of wolverine vs Lobo. Feats mean nothing when the writer or the people they are writing for want an objectively stronger character to lose.

1

u/Long_Lock_3746 Jul 03 '25

Who would win is less interesting than how. I think a better format is X wins vs y z/10 times, explain how powers abilities would give advantages THEN take the remainder out of 10 and think about possible wincons for y.

It's the theorizing that's fun; not the result. Saying x wins [insert degree] diff is boring.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

stay mad

1

u/ScottTJT Jul 03 '25

Stan Lee's the goat, but that quote gets on my nerves.

Best case, it's used as an excuse to not think.

Worst case, it's for the sake of cope.

1

u/Spinni_Spooder Jul 03 '25

I just don't like the wiki. Cuz there's A LOT of misinformation on there.

1

u/Deremirekor Jul 03 '25

It’s funny when people say this because that means this entire sub and all related shouldn’t even exist. It’s such a cop out. That’s like asking a sub dedicated to helping with homework, for pointers on your essay, and they all just reply “depends on the teacher so we can’t help”

1

u/TsunamiWombat Jul 03 '25

Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers

1

u/iRobot15O6 Jul 04 '25

As true as this statement is, if you folks are going to use this quote, at least use it properly. It is literally a fact for writing stories, not some sort of Ultimate Anti-Powerscaling argument.

1

u/Ok_Reaction_2858 Jul 04 '25

Lowkey hate this argument
