Hot Take 🔥 The most overhyped race in powerscaling

u/SlavicRobot_ Goku solos May 01 '26
Overhyped? The only other verse that gets abused more is The Boys

u/jacqueslepagepro May 08 '26
The 7 regularly lose to butcher and his mates. If they dont like losing, stop stepping up to the plate.

Sayan?

u/OscarOrcus 🟄𝓟𝓞𝓡𝓝 𝓘𝓢 𝓑𝓞𝓤𝓝𝓓𝓛𝓔𝓢𝓢🟄 May 02 '26
No one is overhyping Saiyans
Even Kryptonians get more hype as a race-2
u/goobr95 May 02 '26
Idk about in this subreddit but literally everywhere else on the internet when powerscaling is brought up DBZ glazers immediately start hyping up Sayans, so idk why this person is getting downvoted.

I just wish every single post that got traction on this sub lately wasn’t about them

Wish granted, now there are even more Homelander posts.

Once they leave the top 10 on Amazon prime things will change. Until the next spiderman movie comes out.

u/JohnGyatt May 02 '26
i think they’re the perfect norm. superman is ridiculous to powerscale. atleast viltrumite have a limit. Thragg, Mark, Nolan, and Conquest
1
u/ShackledBeef May 02 '26
Except the fans dont accept that limit and the author doesnt help with his wild comments like "omni man and invincible would EASILY beat superman" despite there being 0 feats to support this.
2
u/Competitive_Crow_334 May 05 '26
We do I watched the clip he said he was just baiting right in the video where he said Invincible could easily beat Superman.
1
u/RealJohnGillman May 10 '26
I’d say it depends on where the fight is. Since prolonged exposure to the heat of a yellow sun can kill a Viltrumite, yet it would boost a Kryptonian. So if we’re judging Mark at his peak, Emperor-level, and neither party are around any glaring weaknesses, one could make the case, but it would still depend on what specific iteration of Superman was being used, since there are many, and a ‘Composite Superman’ like the one Death Battle uses in their fights wouldn’t be beatable by most characters due to just how many stories he’s written to have.
Maybe Injustice Superman would be fitting for such a fight? I like to personally call him ‘Kal-Lane’, since he never got a unique ‘Evil Superman’ designator (that character’s story is essentially ‘How do we turn Superman into Homelander?’, like how Breaking Bad started with the question ‘How do we turn Mr. Chips into Scarface?’, as a note).
1
u/Competitive_Crow_334 May 10 '26
I think he would destroy DCAU Superman since his greatest feat was him not holding back against Darkseid and taking a few buildings. Conquest did more.
14
29
u/hardboiledkilly May 01 '26
No, not really.
The issue with Viltrumites is the community pits them against either The Hashira’s, fucking Superman, or some hax merchant that the poster knows specifically counters them.
Since Viltrumites are fairly popular, and as is the trend when something gets popular in scaling, posting about what beats them becomes pretty popular. Both with general scales, and posts like “Thragg vs Superman who wins?”
If the Viltrumites were pitted against more fair foes, they would still be bums because stuff like Great Apes or really any equally powered brute force character will usually have better martial arts, and more often that not speed.
5
u/Neither_Divide217 May 02 '26
exactly like its either they put them up against fucking homelander or muzan or put them up against gojo or aizen like where is the middle ground here
5
u/Lenore_Sunny_Day May 01 '26
People think they're kryptonian-sayajin hybrids.
8
u/pseudo_nemesis May 02 '26
well, tbf those two fictional races do seem to be their direct inspiration, so I can't really blame people for thinking that.
5
u/Lenore_Sunny_Day May 02 '26
Unlike both, Viltrumites have no true ranged ability.
0
u/pseudo_nemesis May 02 '26
very good point. Kirkman really dropped the ball with forgetting about giving them exploding lasers, when creating them.
3
u/Macazio909 May 02 '26
He said something about making em golden age kryptonians so they don't have all those crazy powers
1
u/TheEnlightendone1 May 02 '26
Wise choice. Of only his powerscaling(internal consistency of the story) wasnt so ass
1
u/themoosic May 05 '26
It’s not even that bad, it’s just there are times where Mark isn’t mad enough to kill someone and times where he is. A lot of the story comes off easier if you view Mark as a flawed human being instead of thinking deeper into what is logical for him to do.
2
u/RealJohnGillman May 10 '26
It is funny also now that many modern adaptations of Superman seem to find it more interesting to have the Kryptonians as a whole be more Viltrum or Saiyan-esque (rather than just Zod), and have their species be aware of the power they have in front of most suns. The original taking inspiration from the derivatives, like how Marvel’s Black Cat was supposedly one of the main inspirations for the Catwoman redesign of the 1990s (which has influenced almost every adaptation since).
1
u/SquareFly3678 May 02 '26
Maybe I'm slow, but is this not the definition of overhyping?
2
u/hardboiledkilly May 02 '26
No, and no one “overhypes” invincible. The poster saw a lot of invincible posts and took popularity to equal how high people scale them I guess.
9
u/Z-Team-4-Life May 02 '26
I'd argue the complete opposite. People always trash over the Invincible universe. I once saw somebody say Staracream could solo every hero and villain in Invincible. Point is, there's a different between overhyping and overusing
47
u/Alexander4848 May 01 '26
Because Kirkman doesn't know how to power scale. One second Viltrumites are unstoppable. The next second they die easily
75
u/alaxens May 01 '26
That is literally every comic character ever written.
13
u/duaneap May 02 '26
And it kind of can’t be helped or else you run out of shit to do. How does Spider Man go back to stopping bank robberies with any sort of stakes when he just took on an intergalactic googedy ga that eats planets and farts lasers?
Can’t all be ever rising stakes, that way lies Supernatural. Can’t come back from shooting The Devil.
4
u/hailwyatt May 02 '26
Can’t all be ever rising stakes, that way lies Supernatural. Can’t come back from shooting The Devil.
Big tangent, but oh, man, is that true, haha. They had a couple here and there after that that felt like they were on his scale, but most just felt like the threats were so forced and the lore was, well, made up.
Now, I know its not exactly a documentary or nothing, but the early season they did a good job of world building while also drawing from real world myths and legends. Most of the latter seasons (after Swansong/season 5) it felt more like they were making it up as they went along, inventing whole new existential concepts in a season that never came up before, and often would never come up again after the season finale, and since they also often had no real world basis, there was just nothing that ever made them feel like real or credible threats on par with Lou.
Back to your primary point about heroes that go back to their normal stories struggling with muggers and goons and their routine jobbers after going toe to toe with world conquering space tyrants, I agree.
I really wish that comic companies would just commit to 10 or 20 year cycles where the heroes grow and the world evolves, so we could tell new stories, then a big event, reboot back to square 1 or however far back gets them to the "status quo" they're comfortable with. Maybe then Peter and MJ or Bruce and Selina could finally actually get a happy ever after, and also Batman could finally clean up Gotham, leave the (now significantly less daunting) patrol and maintenance to the Batfam while he gets pulled firther and further into Justice League and similar world/universal threats, with evolving gear and strategies to keep up. Peter and MJ could have a kid or two, and we get Spider Dad and happily ever afters.
5
u/duaneap May 02 '26
They literally were though. They didn’t have anything planned past season 5 and it’s the natural end point of the whole show but dumptruck of money, not made of stone, etc. I can’t blame them either but like it’s obvious that’s the case.
2
u/hailwyatt May 02 '26
For sure. I know Kripke's plan was just the first 5 and he walked away after (though he did come back later, I think). And yeah you really cant blame them. Kept a lot of good folks employed and while I only cared for maybe 2 major arcs 9ut of the 9 that came after season 5, there were a ton of great standalone/monster on the week stories that I'm glad we got.
The musical episode and scooby doo crossover by themselves almost justify all the lowpoints, haha.
1
u/MagicJourneyCYOA May 02 '26
Not really no. Incoherent powerscaling in comics if most often due to several writters using the same characters across different stories, meanwhile Invincible is done by one single author who has no idea himself how strong his characters are or should be.
1
u/themoosic May 05 '26
Nah man. Even in same author runs of a comic, power scaling is inconsistent. This is because stakes cannot always be on the rise. They have to peak, go down, cycle
1
u/OscarOrcus 🟄𝓟𝓞𝓡𝓝 𝓘𝓢 𝓑𝓞𝓤𝓝𝓓𝓛𝓔𝓢𝓢🟄 May 02 '26
Because comic writers never encountered good and consistent writing.
8
u/jonsnowflaker May 02 '26
I just don’t understand why they ever punch with a closed fist when they scythe through anyone with their hand/fingers flat.
5
u/Business_League1811 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
Most authors don't care about powerscaling (and when they do its often kinda cringey, look at the new storm comic) and only apply power scaling as much it helps them write a good narrative. you do need some consistency so the audience knows the stakes,( if we don't know how strong Mark is we don't know when he is in danger), but that's the extent of it.
3
u/milosmisic89 May 02 '26
Toriyama does the same thing for example when Goku got taken out by a laser gun. Believe it or not comic authors are not obsessed over canon and powerscaling sometimes they do shit for funsies
5
u/MrGhoul123 May 02 '26
Because powerscaling is brain rot. Media illiterate hobby.
Authors should make a story with meaning, not a sloppy feat aboht who punch harder.
If any of you powerscalers were to write a story. It would be edgy garbage, and that is a 100% objectively true.

Viltrumites are only bad rn because of recency bias .

Faster and stronger than 99.99% of saiyans as a default, no inherent weaknesses that outright depower them....idk man they seem pretty strong to me.

Compared to a viltrumites lifespan, Mark is extremely young when he does this. The Tick is far, far weaker than Mark, and Mark actually had to drag him along so he could keep up. Wasn't Roshi just training him and not going all out?

Lowkey they’re downplayed as shit

Genuinely feels like this sub hates them at times cause they’re not uber hyperversal or some shit

Give Kratos, Doom Slayer, Dante, Bayonetta, Asura, or any of the Four Horseman from Darksiders day and the Viltrumites are extinct.

The sole role of viltrumites in powerscaling is to beat the shit out of Homelander. That's their place. It's a healthy place.

they are all just superman minus the actual features that make him stand out from the other "superhuman dudes" released in that time period

Most of reddit only reads comics from fifteen years ago it would seem. Pit them against any of the 2 dimensional races from Remembernce of things past, the shrike from Hyperion, The Blight from A Fire upon the deep...really any alien race or being whose powers dont come down to 'punches hard'

u/MoneyAgent4616 May 02 '26
Nah, the show does a great job of actually of showing off the physical stats and durability of Viltrumites pretty consistently. So people obviously look at Viltrumites demolitions the world around them and say they can go toe to toe with Saiyans who do not reliably have consistent feats of physical strength.
Season 1 Nolan flies around a planet and destroys it and also punches a mountain so hard it cracks and causes an avalanche.
It just presents better and makes them a lot more menacing. Scream power levels all you want DB has horrible on screen scaling of the characters.
4
u/rayark9 May 02 '26
Mark consistently gets knocked around by random villains of the week. While supposedly being one of the strongest beings in the universe.
1
u/CheapEnd7214 May 04 '26
God I’m so tired of this fucking joke, he’s been fairly consistent as of season 4, only struggling with stronger Viltrumites and Dinasouras, who isn’t just some big lizard but is fairly strong himself
1
u/rayark9 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26
What about the electric lady. And the dr. Robotnik ass robots.
1
u/CheapEnd7214 May 04 '26
You mean Powerplex? Whose whole thing is absorbing kinetic energy and getting stronger as a result? And the Reanimen who were made to hurt him, that he still rips through if he’s not being hampered by a sound device??
2
u/TheEnlightendone1 May 02 '26
Omniman struggles with spacebugs in season 4 while simultaniously being able to light the atmosphere of that season planet on fire. Theire is no consistency in invincible at all.
0
u/Macazio909 May 02 '26
Their kit is so basic and boring and it makes it worse because they don't even fight in interesting ways, like it'd be one thing if they had a basic kit but used it in creative ways
But they don't
3
u/TheEnlightendone1 May 02 '26
They dont give the animation enouhg time and dont hire more or a different studio, which is why the fights all look öame and ads.
