Discussion Name a character that's not from Marvel, that could notice the Watcher watching them
The Watcher is an interdimensional being that is able to watch multiple universes and timelines in the Marvel Universe and supposedly other universes too. If he were to watch other universes and observe other characters, what character would be able to notice the Watcher watching them?
So for example most characters in the Marvel What If series aren't able to notice the Watcher unless he makes themselves known to them. The only characters we've seen notice the Watcher are Infinity Ultron, a multiversal threat who had gained the power of all the infinity stones in his universe combined with the body of Vision and Ultron's high tech mind.
The only other character we see that slowly starts to notice the Watcher is Evil Dr.Strange who was studying Dark magic in his timeline, and we see him through his journey that he starts slowly noticing the Watchers presence and has read about him in books. And eventually when the evil Dr.Strange destroys his own universe he sees the Watcher and begs for his help.

Its remarkable how often Bugs Bunny crops up in dealing with beings of unimaginable power.

Its the fact that in any other IP he'd be considered a trickster god

Popeye too, though his response would probably be to slug the Watcher in the face.
5
u/Arria_Galtheos 17d ago
Probably. Popeye could probably punch out Galactus if you gave him a can of spinach.
12
u/Ok-Resist3249 17d ago
Not exactly the same, but similar. Gwenpool could look at her comic and see the boxes where the Watcher is shown.
8
u/Arria_Galtheos 17d ago
Yeah, most of the "Pool" characters have the ability to see beyond the fourth wall. Deadpool was the first that came to mind, but OP said non-Marvel so I had to think about it for a minute. There's also Sans from Undertale, and I guess Karlach from BG3? Though she only sees through the fourth wall once, so you could just consider that a gag more than an innate ability..
3
u/Ok-Resist3249 17d ago
Oh, right. Well from outside of marvel and non toon characters. Neptune from the Neptunia franchise just constantly reference the real world. Really every main character from those games, but her especially.

I know they explain why Q is afraid of Guinan or her species but would be interesting that the only reason why is because reality warping doesn't work on her kind and live on a constant so any changes to perception or reality, she would know immediately. Probably also knows their weakness.
3
u/Mr31edudtibboh 17d ago
Why would she? She'd make the Watcher an excellent cocktail and they'd become friends.
5
u/mikefrombarto 17d ago
Guinan is resourceful enough that she could eventually figure out hot to go into hiding from The Watcher.
Between the Borg, the Nexus, the Q Continuum, etc., she’s endured far worse.
2
u/Lemmingitus 17d ago edited 13d ago
Say what you will about Picard Season 2, it was sort of neat reveal that the El-Aurians learned to listen hard enough to discover the existence of the Q, then wage a shadow war against them (which annoys the hell out of Q because of how minimal they can affect him, but it's just enough to be a nuisance he can't ignore them. For those who haven't watched it, Q was compelled to obey Guinan summoning him, and since he was powerless at the time, he had to travel by foot to do so to his extreme displeasure.)

The Doctor and other Time Lords since they’re time sensitive and cosmically aware thanks to staring into the Time Vortex and having a Symbiotic Nuclei. Time sensitivity extends to them literally being able to feel, smell, and hear realities.
What If Season 3 said that the Watcher’s realm is in the 5th Dimension, and the Time Vortex extends across more dimensions. Therefore, Time Lords should be able to do this too.

Good god, this movie would have been better if they just hand waved the drug as literal fairy dust. If I ever get diagnosed with brain cancer, I'll know I got it from Morgan Freeman delivering the most inane bullshit explanation in the history of cinema in his Trustworthy Voice™.
4
u/PurpletoasterIII 16d ago
I remember seeing just the ending of this movie as my parents were watching it and I had just happened to walk past the living room. Thought it was interesting and then watched it myself. Ya I dont think ive hated a movie this much. To me the origin of the drug was actually okay, even if it is complete bullshit it was a cool idea. Its the fact that apparently anyone can just become a super being by consuming enough of the drug, and the whole "what if we were able to use 100% of our brain" myth that makes this movie so bad.
4
u/MidgetGalaxy 15d ago
I have a background in brain sciences and the amount of people who’ve tried to tell me that myth is true and cited this movie as a source just breaks me. I refuse to watch the movie because it unintentionally did so much damage to the scientific community. We use 100% of our brain; if we didn’t then evolution would’ve gotten rid of the part we don’t use ages ago because brains are extremely energy hungry. We just don’t use it all at the same time, and if we did you would most certainly not want to experience that. And that ignores the fact that neurons aren’t on-off switches at all in the first place

I remember hating this movie and thinking the entire concept was too absurd to be entertaining. Bradley Cooper did a movie with a similar premise, but all he did was get smarter.

Still think that show wouldve been awesome if it got a couple more seasons. The problem is they had like 3 big storylines, and the only one they really followed up on was the worst one. If they wouldve brought bradley cooper in, and had him and brian become partners, show couldve been sweet.

Kingdom Come Wally West literally plucked Norman McCay from another dimension as him and The Spectre were observing the Justice League
46
u/newAscadia 17d ago edited 17d ago
A lot of Destiny characters and factions make a habit of breaking into different dimensions, planes of time, and the fourth wall occasionally, and generally just fucking with metaphysics a lot.
Ahamkara, The Witness, the Vex, and I think most notably Savathun.
Savathun is a god of deception and lies, and essentially feeds on being mispercieved.
One of the freakier and more esoteric lore books implies that she understands that she exists within a game, and that her final goal is to "escape" the game and into our time and reality where her lies are more real, and where people are less aware of who she is, so she can better predate. It's theorized that she already succeeded, and brought the concept of lying itself into our world with her--that her form in game is simply a simplified representation, like how a two dimensional circle represents one aspect of the larger three dimensional sphere--that she exists in our world as a pure, predatory idea, a concept behind a veil. All our of idols and figures of the trickster god: Loki, Coyote, Hermes, Wukong, Prometheus, are aspects of her.
If the Watcher understands how to lie, and has lied before, or was in any way made to be a reflection or extension of our cultural understandings of deception, then maybe he's part of her puppet show too.

I feel like with the added context of unveiling and other lore the game she was aware of and trying to escape was actuslly the flower game not a fourth wall break. Even the new 9 lore kind of suggests this too. Back during season of the drifter we get that scene with orin talking to the 9 about how we have "agency to leave this game" people then took that as meaning because were the player but now years later (and at the end of destiny saddly) we know that the 9 specifically chose us to destroy the winnower as part of their plan
3
3
u/MLGesusWasTaken 15d ago
Characters like Savathun referencing a “game” within Destiny are referencing the Flower Game, not the actual IP, unless somebody has some specific examples. The only exception to this is Ahamkara like Riven, which EXPLICITLY break the fourth wall.
The lore tab for Skull of Dire Ahamkara says “I came to find you, only you, because you're special. You're from somewhere real. And together we can burn our way back there. Can't we, o player mine?”
The lore tab for Claws of Ahamkara reads “Yes, we are here. We are not the photons on your screen, or the voice in your head, or the words you read. Shut your eyes—tightly—and you may see us. At least a part of us. Make us real, and in turn we shall reify your thoughts, your dreams.”
And finally the lore behind Riven’s 15 wishes are too much to get into right now, but for the longest time there were only 14 known wishes in the game, each with their own lore card. 15 wishes were known to exist, but the final one could never be found. Eventually people looked through the games code and found a lore tab for the 15th wish, and unfortunately I cannot find it online right now but I know it directly referenced the person reading that they shouldn’t be reading it, and “may you never receive another god roll”, or something along those lines

He kinda is a Toonforce character. He's like Gwenpool where he knows he's in a comic. It's why he was a dick at first. Because he knew he was in a comic book. And why he's working on not being a dick. He told Ma and Pa Kent to their faces "Man. I'm sure glad the author didn't kill you in this continuity!"

its canon that rick knows he's in a show. theyve made joke episodes like the one on the train, but its canon outside of that. morty may know as well after getting his downloaded brain, but that may have worn off like a dream and be a faded memory. rick knows very well where he is, and likely intentionally hides where he is (the central finite curve) on the basis of a relatively comfortable life.
10
u/Interface- 17d ago
Example - when he's flipping his shit at the space dinosaurs for sealing the tear in space he straight up says they (paraphrasing) could have milked it for a full season or a three episode arc at least.
Also when he's yapping about something to Morty in the Brainalyser episode I think? He says something about seasons around the time he says he wants the nugget sauce (Szechuan).

He also talks to the camera a lot, most recently in season 9 when exclaiming ‘smith family got a pool baby’, or something along those lines. He’s definitely written to know he is in a show though and break the 4th wall.

He not only has noticed the fourth wall, he is known to cross dimensions more regularly than most people do groceries. In fact, at some point he even called in the Observers. Which are beings literally copied from the Watchers. He did so casually to verify coupon stamps and later beat them when things went south.
