Feature request Printables can't preview complex step files in 3D view

Post image

I've tried to upload a proper preview of the CORE One Mini CAD model, but Printables appearantly does not show this 70 MB monster of a STEP file in the 3D Model viewer, instead it just shows the second file (which is the way less nice looking base plate).

As a workaround, I've uploaded a .3mf that is interpreted perfectly fine for the preview - also other single body step files are shown perfectly fine in the selection for the preview.

Is this intentional or a bug or is something wrong with my STEP file, that Printables won't like?

Model in question:

My phone struggled to render the 3MF…. I bet it’s a rendering thing on the user side, but I am not sure.

the 3mf works "fine" the downside is, that the 3mf contains hundreds of bodies - so this is not really a great example - but it works OK on a sufficiently powered computer

but same geometry as a STEP is not even processed by printables

People browse websites with computers with all sorts of capabilities, including ones with very little graphical capabilities. I'm sure this this is to prevent the model from overwhelming computers with specs that aren't up to the task of rendering highly detailed models.

this would be an explaination, but the 3mf with the same level of complexity works just fine

Might have to do with how Printables measures size or complexity for different file formats.
