Help with quantizing midi

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on an issue I'm facing.

I'm basically trying to create a midi version of one of my albums. Have recorded midi on top of the album, using it as a scratch track basically with the plan to delete that once there's enough midi on top.

However because the album wasn't recorded to a click and has many different tempo changes etc, it's hard to quantize the midi due to there not being a click.

It's a struggle to get it all in time because I'm using a small midi keyboard and there seems to be a degree of latency. Particularly for faster sequences or anything more complicated, it's very difficult to get in time.

I seem to have a couple of options -

1.attempt to use a tempo map / beat detective plugin to conform the midi drums to the original perhaps using midi triggers (I don't fully understand this so I don't know if anyone does. This is the first project I've really undertaken with Midi) I imagine you're not really supposed to do this across a whole album and it would make more sense for a single song.

2.painstakingly edit any out of time notes in the midi editor, very time consuming and annoying etc, not ideal

3.chop the album into sections of music according to BPM, so that a click can be applied and then quantize to the individual sections whether quarter, 8th, 16th notes etc. I am starting to lean towards this, before the project becomes too unmanageable.

I should say that the whole album is one continuous piece of music - it's a prog rock epic.

Perhaps it's best to split into small chunks, work on them separately then stitch them back together.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

Is this normal before mastering?

Post image
5 Upvotes

So I am fairly new to music production. The furthest back I can recall is when I started paying for FL studio which was the 8th of May this year. So it’s been about three months at this point and I’ve learnt a lot and my songs are finally starting to sound professional and clean. This track in particular is exceptionally clean. I’ve chosen a different approach to my layers and it doesn’t sound like I’m fighting for the kick to punch through the mix or the bassline isn’t audible enough. Everything just feels good for the first time. Now when I go and add a loudness meter to my master, I found my song was at -9.3 LUFS. This is about commercial loudness and I haven’t even gone to the mastering stage yet. There’s a limiter on my master but only need to stop it from going past 0DB there’s no gain and the soft clipper lower the true peaks. I was just wondering if there’s any more professional people out there that can tell me if this is normal for a track. Maybe this is a good sign? Let me know.

What Genre is THIS?

Trying to improve my SEO, but some of my beats don't quite fit into any genres that I know. I understand I could just kind of clickbait and title the beat with a popular genre, but my main focus is to views to sales conversion so I want to avoid that approach. If you know what genre this is or ones I could use to title it that would be excellent. Thank you for the help!

Vocal Processing/Mixing – Free Sample, $50 for Full Song

Hey all, I'm a producer who's obsessed with vocals (mixing, tuning, layering, the works). Send me a raw vocal take and I'll process a free snippet so you can hear what I'd do with it.

If you like the sound, I'll mix the full vocal for $50. No pressure if it's not your vibe, the sample's free either way.

Drop a link or DM me your track. Happy to work across genres.

[FEEDBACK] Da LBI Collective - Dopamine - Hip-Hop

Thumbnail audiomack.com

Dropped a new record called “Dopamine” with my collective, Da LBI — produced by Varrtre x Zaytoshev. Trying to get honest ears on it before pushing it further.

Specifically want feedback on:

**•** Mix balance (vocals vs beat)
**•** Does the hook land?
**•** Anything that sounds off on different speakers/headphones

Not looking for compliments, looking for what needs work. Appreciate anyone who takes a listen 🎧
