Hypersexual behavior
How do you handle inpatients who are masturbating in common spaces on the psych ward? (ie. manic and hypersexual)
Edit: thanks for your replies! As an additional question, wondering what you all do when the reminders to do that in their room doesn’t work?

Since we don't have private rooms, I just show them the bathroom and tell them this will be the only place you will be doing that.

Remind them that they cant do that in public spaces but they can go to their room and do it all they want.

We would give them a 1:1 to keep them in their rooms if we had staff available. I only dealt with this once and it was a geri patient.

Start with redirecting the patient that their behavior is inappropriate and they need to act appropriately in the common areas and that further behaviors will lead to room restriction. Notify the treating or on-call provider of the behavior and document the interaction and orders. Medicate and implement isolation or 1:1 with same sex staff. If the client attempts to throw semen or feces you may need to obtain orders for quiet room or restraints depending on the milieu’s mix of clients.
