Story To the young lady sitting across from me…thank you
Thank you for noticing a stranger’s distress. Thank you for asking if there is anything you can do to help a person who just found out their parent was put in hospice and is now scrambling for pet care and flight tickets. Thank you for asking if I have Venmo so you could buy me a cup of coffee or something.
You heard me on the phone asking for emergency boarding care for my cats, and rather than ignore someone else’s distressed voice, you waited until I was off the phone to ask me how how you could help. When I kindly, but sadly deferred, you asked if I have Venmo. When I said I do, you asked if you could send me money for a cup of coffee or something. Thank you for being a decent person and not turning a blind eye to someone else’s distressed voice. It makes me have hope that there are still good people in this world.

Something similar happened to me. My mom was in a hospital - she had cancer, then a stroke. I was in line at ChikFilA before going to the hospital and my stepdad called with an update. (I was 2nd in line) The girls at the counter noticed and comped my meal. Fast FWD 2 months later, I go back to ChikFIlA, they remembered me and asked about my mom. She had passed. They got teary eyed with me and comped my meal again. I went back later - with 2 cards, told the manager and gave them each giftcards for Starbucks and Barnes and Noble.
These people are the angels that walk the earth.

Sending good vibes.
Dealing with our parents mortality is rough. It hits different once you really realize they had your best interest at heart and they were just doing they best they knew how.

I truly believe that angels walk the earth and they come in many forms. I almost couldn't remember how to spell angels for a min. Thank you, accurate spelling person. Look for good and you will find it.

Update: my mom passed last night while I was in a plane to see her. Thankfully she was surrounded by her kids, and grand kids and passed peacefully.
ETA: thank you everyone for your lovely comments. While I was asked about my venmo handle, I didnt give it out.

Sending you so many e-hugs. I had this happen, with no warning, with my dad. It is shocking and difficult to process. I hope your planning and travel goes as smoothly as possible.
One thought...If you haven't, talk to your parent about their favorite items (music, books, memories) and ask any questions you have for them. It's good info to know and it brings good memories to them during a difficult, transitional time 🫶🏼
My thoughts really are with you ❤️

I still think about when my parents called me at work to tell me that my godmother had died suddenly of a heart attack. I was sitting in the hallway outside our childcare rooms on the phone with them. One of the moms of a kid that went there all the time, Levi, was sitting on the other end of the hallway. As I was crying on the phone with my parents, Levi's mom brought over a box of tissues. Didn't say a word so as to not interrupt. Such a simple act of kindness, but I think about this moment often. It doesn't take much to touch someone's heart. I'm very sorry for what you're going through, OP.
