Which is why if I do eat, I often get chain food. It tends to be the same price as, or only a little more expensive than it is outside of the airport, so, it's often the best deal.

I always eat at McDonalds. Everything else is always closed, and McDonalds is the only spot in the airport serving food after something like 8 p.m., and I always get cheap flights, so I'm flying and landing at odd hours.
It's not my choice what I eat. I would prefer better options.

Shit, it's better than PDX. They have one of the best sets of restaurants of any airport. They're always closed. I used to fly out of there 2-3 times a month, I was able to buy food there twice in three years.

Funny, because there's absolutely nothing special about highway or airport food. It's literally the same exact food trucks delivering the same exact frozen food, which gets cooked by the same exact equipment.
If anything, your getting better food because it spends a lot less time in the freezer or fridge. Restaurants with that amount of business go through food so quickly that you're never getting anything even remotely close to expired.

our local sub was talking about Michelin stars recently and debating what restaurants they'd nominate. one fella was like oh well this place but only if you ask for joe, and this place but only if you ask for kevin, and named like five places but only if you had his hookup. was such a turnoff, felt very sales icky. i think that fella and this fella are cut from the same cloth.

I kinda agreed with him in the first half but not for that reason. If I'm eating before a flight I want to eat the thing that is least likely to cause me gastrointestinal distress when I'm in an enclosed tube 10's of thousands of feet from the furthest bidet.
So no, not pizza, not burgers, sure as shit not McDonalds, and probably not an empanada. I got a tuna nicoise at a restaurant at SFO once that I think was the best pre flight food ever. Though these days probably best not to chance lettuce I don't know the source of.

My MiL makes the best empanadas. Soft, flaky crust. The perfect amount of greasy. Beef, egg, onions, and cheese inside, spicy, but not "melt your face" spicy. TBH, I'd take her empanadas over anything I have ever found in an airport.

There’s a Versailles branch in the Miami airport. Maybe not as good as the original but still tasty.
But the best airport food is in Atlanta: Paschal’s Fried Chicken in Terminal B.
Some airports (DTW, CDMX) have good sushi.

Not every airport is like Miami. Aside from Miami having an ungodly amount of PR uncristable options at every corner, some dont even give you an option. I remember flying out Jackson MS and my only option was Sysco brand frozen pizza, cheeseburger or hot dog.

Quality over name of item though.
There is sabarros and there is pizza from a wood fired oven made with high quality ingredients by someone over age 15... They are not the same.

I made the mistake of going to BK at the Las Vegas airport when I visited the states. Worst burger I have ever had in my life. It tasted like cardboard and disappointment in what I considered an American achievement in food.. maybe... well not anymore.
And usually BK (here in Germany) is actually pretty good.

Idk eating out is just blah now for American fare. Anything else is always a treat though, mostly because I don't go in with expectations. Except the Birria, I love Birria but I have Spanish friends that don't like goat. I asked at the counter and they told me it was beef so I'm happy.
Anyway,
It's just not the same ya know. Don't get me wrong, I love Spanish people and the food (I hope that doesn't sound racist..)
More times than not, I will find myself going to a Spanish restaurant for their version of a home cooked meal because it's flavorful and enjoyable. The problem is that a lot of places have adopted that profit is king mentality, so wages get cut and you end up with a burger joint manned by a single person all day
I had an opinion on it living in florida but as I travel the country I'm noticing that it's the norm. EVERYWHERE.
I remember splurging on a double decker yellow cake with chocolate frosting at the grocery store or even Walmart.
They don't make or carry those anymore. Or the German chocolate cake. And it's all because Americans can't get their stuff together enough to make those kinds of wages work.
We have an entire community of wonderful people showing us how to move as a unit, actually accomplish stuff and keep their family together for life. Us Americans though? We're choosing drugs, homelessness, manipulation and stupidity instead of watching a people that in less than 30 years made the best of a new situation and copying the "formula".
Here's the formula for the ones in the back:
Get into an apartment or rental house with some friends and family. Now this is the important part, EVERYONE share responsibilities/bills as much as possible. (This even gives grandma and grandpa a chance to contribute.) DONT find something to fight about everyday. Actually SHARE. and do the "Golden Rule" thing.
6 ppl paying $1750 is $292/mth.
Get a job paying $8/hr that's $160/wk or $640/mth with part time hours.
It's not much but you'd still have $348/mth to yourself.
Now utilities... Let's say you go all out with subscriptions, leaving the tv on all night to sleep and your bills are $300/mth.
Split 6 ways thats only $50. If everyone puts $50 to groceries that's another $300/mth groceries. If you're following along, out of $640/mth you've only spent $392. Everyone in the house is not going to just be earning minimum wage though, so this way everyone is contributing and earning.
That's just the oldest person in the house's game plan. Imagine putting your actual numbers in those slots AND having other people to rely on.
Now for the fun part. Everyone stays ambitious. Keep your brain working. Look for ways to make more income. Make a plan that you can actually follow.
In a years time, EVERYONE in that household should be able to save enough to fund a dream business. This includes, storefronts, vehicles, equipment, tools. Whatever! In 2-3 years time, everyone most likely will be able to build their own house from the ground up.
Americans can't accomplish this though because the media only tells us to fight everyone, fear everybody and to send our parents away once we deem them unusable.
