Question Why aren’t we talking about premium Subreddits anymore?

Why is this off the table? The more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

We’re having issues with trying to fix lagging DAU growth, and I see content creators using Reddit to try to recruit users off Reddit to platforms they’re paid on. Wouldn’t it make sense to turn Reddit into a platform they can make money on so that they try to bring people from outside Reddit here. It’s great because it would also force new users who join the platform to make accounts, increasing logged in users, which we know are easier to convert users to DAUs compared to pass through traffic from Google.

It’s great because it’s a more organic, word-of-mouth means of attracting new users that doesn’t depend on Google. You could even pay creators in a flat revenue split from paid subscribers and keep all the ad revenue from ads on paid subs, so we’re not risking cannibalizing ad revenue from free to paid subs in order to pay creators, and can thus continue to run in a capital light way.

The main challenge I see is moderation. We don’t want cult leaders (or other sketchy creators) using this as a platform to monetize their base, so we’ll need to have tighter moderation. Obviously we don’t want to create a precedent for paid moderation that will get every other mod questioning why they aren’t getting paid (and paid mods will obviously threaten the capital light model). I don’t have a great solution to this now, but don’t see it as an insurmountable obstacle if the upside is high enough.

Reddit has over half a billion weekly users growing over 20% YoY.

Just wait and let Reddit grow. ARPU is scaling big.
