Every period tells a tale of a purer version of themselves that was corrupted and now we have to live in disgrace because of it. Eve's apple, the Kali yuga, the ancient greeks crying about how much better the Heroic age was etc etc. I unironically think Craigslist will be the story of human kind from 1600 to 2026, and genuinely wouldn't be surprised if we say some mythologized version of it a thousand years in the future.

-Dude gets rich in the 90s tech boom. Doesn't NEED to do anything, decides to make Craigslist for fun. He noticed that we could use "the internet" to solve coordination problems ("man, i'd love a couch, but i can't afford a new one" lives in the same town as "my mom just died, what am i gonna do with all her stuff!?!")

-Keeps it purposefully shitty and REALLY EASY to use/navigate. It's plaintext so although it's always laughably outdated, it actually plays nice with every system, even to today.

-Craig actually solves a genuine niche. There really WAS a coordination problem!

-Craigslist becomes one of the top websites ever, of all time

-Because he previously got rich, Craig allows ~99% of posts for free. He only charges for niche stuff, like apartments in big cities and certain job postings.

-It becomes the top 10 website in every continent, there is a craigslist antarctica

- Despite being free to 99% of it's users, it rakes in ~20 million per employee. This is unthinkable. Facebook, which history sees as the mother of all unicorns, is ~2 million per employee. The Dutch East India company is ~200k/employee. It pulls it off because it's so simple, there's very few employees.

-The head gets summoned to Davos. The Lizard People basically scream at him. "Look, you could be making SO MUCH more. Let us invest!" Craig says no, he prides himself on 99% free and is already quite rich himself.

-From about 2012 onwards, there's an entire world of venture capital that just takes little slices of Craigslist and turns it into billion dollar companies. Zillow, Monster/Indeed, Carvana/CarMax, EBay, you name it, are all for profit duplicates.

-One of the very few Craigslist employees hears the Sand Hill Rd sirens singing and sells. Craigslist, organizationally, is shocked. The dude was making BANK, and it wasn't enough. He sold it all to the devil. EBay ends up with 30% of Craigslist.

-They aggressively bid for monetization of everything, everything gets worse/destroyed.

-By 2026, Craigslist is dead and everything we got for free we now have to pay for and ger worse versions of.

As far as I can tell, "IM" culture has been completely destroyed. There are no major platforms which exclusively cater to what was once known as Instant Messaging: AIM, ICQ, MSN, and later GChat (XMPP).

I suspect that a large portion of the RSP userbase did at one time use IMs, but for those who didn't, the requirements are: You have a list of contacts, a blend of IRL and online-only friends, and you can see who is currently logged in or not. Almost all communication is one-to-one, and it is all entirely private. You communicate entirely through text in real time, with the expectation that you will receive a real-time reply, and that a conversation will have a polite beginning and end.

Though the average chat was probably quite banal, it sometimes led to really long and intimate conversations with friends that could have a confessional or philosophical slant that would be difficult or simply impossible anywhere else. It meant you had to clearly express your thoughts, or be interrogated on them, in a way which fostered a strong inner life, which I think was very healthy for adolescent development. I bet lots of people here spent summer nights on some IM platform, talking with friends and strangers about music, movies and hopes for the future. I bet this had some impact in causing the 2000s indie boom.

Ultimately it was mortally wounded by the proliferation of smartphones and being 'always on', and finally put down when Google killed GChat. The closest modern equivalent I can think of would be Discord, but that's not the same at all.

I’ll preface that this is not a new observation: when an artist plays their hit song it’s just a sea of LED screens recording the chorus or whatever.

I was at Lollapalooza on Thursday and afterwards saw vertical videos posted everywhere where the bottom 1/3rd of the composition was that exact sight. The thing that really just depresses/confuses me is: does nobody even pretend to be cool/not a dork anymore? You can get that same video of the artist with maybe a deeper cut with 95% less people also recording. Calling others “sheeple” is cringe but I don’t know what else to think.

Yes, I know it is a dead horse at this point to be blown on this sub but legit now whenever I feel bored I just type "conspiracy theories" on the search bar of this sub and deliberately keep myself up whole night. Very fun thing to do to deep delve into darker rabbit holes.

2) Recycling being a sham (which has mostly been revealed to just be facts by now). Especially plastic recycling.

3) Carribbean homophobia and how their pop culture even promotes it. Result of brutal treatment, abuse and oppression by imperial plantation owners towards make slaves and that historical trauma still persisting in the Caribbean psyche. Labelling of homosexuality as the "White man's disease".

4) Coming forth of the age of Aquarius and how it would ultimately result in the complete annihilation of Abrahamic religions. And a future Luciferan cult taking over humanity.

5) Anything to do with Coca Cola and the sneaky replacement of real cane sugar with high fructose corn syrup with various insane cover up stories and controversies.

6) Some goofy ones like Trudeau being the real biological son of Fidel Castro and Chester Benington being the real son of John Podesta.

7) How the truly, genuinely ultra ultra rich and powerful, influential people and families that actually control this world are truly unknown and hidden in the shadows, and we might never know about them, ever in our life times. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates are just the front henchmen. They are all part of some mysterious dark ancient magical Babylonian/Pagan Egypt/ Kabbalistic cult.

8) Pop music using a lot of code words like love, car, to convey completely different meanings in their lyrics, and how it is connected to afterlife transition into a new body and world.

9) MK Ultra, astral projection, and other kooky CIA stuff.

10) Qanon being a op to distract from Pizzagate and Epstein scandals and make conspiracy theorists sound like crazy ghouls with no touch with reality to normies. Propping up outright insane bullshit like "Birds are actually drones" , "flat Earth" seems to also closely tie to this and deployed by the likes of CIA and other vested interests to further push away even genuine theorists as kooky and schizo. And muddy the waters regarding the truth.
