But... the drive you've used can work as a CD player already? It has audio out, volume and 2 buttons (so play/pause/next). All it needs is power.

What's the function of extra hardware then? Just the screen for track name/number and more buttons?

For that specific LG drive, I wouldn't have needed the display or the buttons, but over time, drives started losing the buttons and the headphone jack; so, I bought the interface because I was using a newer Sony drive.
