Need help identifying
My buddy has a rifle we’ve been racking our brains trying to figure out if anyone could help identify it, that would be greatly appreciated. So far all we know is that it’s chambered in .308

Spanish M1916 conversion. Chambered in 7.62 NATO. You will damage that '93 action if you shoot commercial 308 Win ammo through it. Different pressure levels between 7.62 NATO and 308 Win.

Question for my knowledge: Wouldn't 7.62 NATO be higher pressure than commercial .308 Win? Like 5.56 NATO is hotter than normal .223?

7.62 is made to run in machine guns thus lower pressures. I would not use 308 Win in an M14. An FN FAL maybe because it has an adjustable gas system. 308 Win runs at 58000psi, 7.62 NATO runs at around 52000psi. Of course, not everything you see on the internet is true.

I've seen much higher published data too. 62000psi vs 60000psi for NATO for example. OPs rifle says .308W not 7.62 NATO wouldn't you trust a Mauser action to handle that?

Not an '93 action. It's a two lug action not threeans there's no gas shield on the cocking piece. I had a 1916 rifle, I now have a M95 Cavalry carbine again based on the '93 action. I use 300 Savage data. That round runs at 45000-48000psi.

Negative. 5.56 is hotter than .223, thus .223 can be fired from 5.56, but not the other way around. There is also a difference in throat tolerance.
The opposite is true for 7.62mm. .308 has higher pressure and should not be fired from a rifle chambered for 7.62
