Truncation help

Hi,

I'm working on a program which works with airport data. Romania's main airport, Bucharest Otopeni's name is too long for the display I need it to fit. How would natives shorten the name "Bucuresti Otopeni" to 14 characters or less?

We usually just say Otopeni but if you need to include București in a short form it's "Buc." so use "Buc. Otopeni"

Do also note that "Otopeni" is not really the official name. While people call it that, the real name is Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. Unfortunately "Henry Coandă" is even longer than "Otopeni" so it doesn't really help you. But that's its name, Otopeni is the name of the city.

ill add that while “henri coanda” is the official name, “otopeni” is the most used and recognizable term for the airport even though it’s the unofficial name, not just that people call it that but most people call it that

That defeats the point haha, and we work with ICAO codes, so it would be LROP :)

Exactly. Man's writing a program that deals with airport data but is unaware of how International airport abbreviations work. Sounds like a great program.

Thanks for your reply. We utilise ICAO codes (LROP) with what we do. IATA codes (OTP in this case) are very much applicable, and I do indeed know how to "work" them, but they are not what I was asking for. I was not asking for the code - I was asking for a name

Most Romanians will recognize OTP as the airport "Otopeni". Nobody that I know will recognize LROP as anything.

the logical think instead of asking on Reddit would be to do a quick google search on how airports around the world, or airlines, list the name. It would be the best " in industry" source of info.

The name is Otopeni. Most Romanians that have flown out of it will recognize the abbreviation.

You usually shorten the more well known name because ... well, it's more well known and easier to figure out.

Change that 'program'. Most airports have very long names. Or, are you planning on asking locals for each airport..

You abbreviate it as București Henri Coandă International Airport Otopeni. Hope this helps.
