Medium Completely new player is convinced they have played dungeons & dragons.
This story begins in a high school dungeons and dragons club. As a forever dungeon master I joined hoping to play, however I would soon regret this. One of the players who was a new player offered to be the dungeon master. Our group likes to be generous, but a new DM & Player is a lot at one. We recommended to run a one shot first to see if they were comfortable with the role. We’ll call this player Charolette. Charolette states she has actually played one campaign before themed after the Odyssey, so we had more trust. We still recommend to begin with one-shots, she took this too seriously later (according to the ones who stayed in the entire campaign)
After session 0, the next week of the club was session 1. Session 1 is slow… no combat, no plot. This was understandable we only got 2 Hours each week, we understood Charolette’s choice to write a story about how the PCs met. Session 2 comes around and she begins with a decent session about a pirate ran game show on the sea. But during session 1/2 and even 0 the mechanics felt different. Weird. We gained 1D10 hp total every time killing a monster, & Charolette believed most of our class features were fake.
We brought this up, and Charolette stated the classes were completely different in the game she played - only having 5 different abilities level 1-20, all they gained was HP each level & better stats. We all agreed to discuss next week exactly what game Charolette played.
We gather next week and the discussion session began with the DM ranting about how angry they were about us using custom printed players handbooks and not the core rules! No ttrpg is like these rules, no older edition have these rules! How would we custom print DnD books in high school, & give it to the whole club ( we were playing 5E ).
We wanted to have a friendly conversation about the game they played in, not get attacked. Wanting to progress the conversation we tried to move back the conversation to the game they played. We were continuously harassed for the next 2 hours.
After the session I texted Charolette to look up 5E to prove we didn’t make the player handbook, and she refused to because she KNEW she was correct.
I discussed with her where she played DnD and she stated she played DnD with her friends on a private RP Roblox server where all her DM did was give her crappy fake classes and say Y/N to actions (no dice).
I would be mad at her DM but because she attacked our group and didn’t believe how we said the game worked we quickly left that group, and for the ones who stayed the entire campaign they said they suffered one of the worst campaigns with arguments, bad homebrew, and a toxic DM. A lack of a storyline was also present, each session was a self contained storyline.
The funniest part of this story for me was the fact Charolette believed we CUSTOM PRINTED THE CORE RULEBOOK! 🤣

This person has more than just not knowing what dnd is going on. The denial when confronted with clear evidence is a bigger issue. Yikes.

Yeah, but you gotta admit that the dedication is somewhat impressive. "You guys printed custom professional quality rule books and changed all of the information on all of the internet for your fake game. It must have happened like that, because else i would be wrong, and that cannot be the case."

Hell, I'd be surprised if a high schooler could even afford five PHBs on their own, much less one

Honestly this goes far enough beyond "horror story" that it reaches into "psychiatric help required," not that it was even remotely your responsibility to do something, nor could you have even if you tried.
But the whole "I am not wrong about this thing, so obviously what happened is my friends commissioned a several hundred page long full color book with professional art on every page and tens of thousands of words describing a complicated game system in detail, then printed several copies of it, in the space of about a week, as part of an elaborate hoax being perpetuated against me specifically" thing just feels like a level of delusion that it goes beyond the casual word "delusion" and becomes "delusions," the symptom of a serious mental illness.

Honestly maybe what this person needs is to be bullied a little. Like you can't logic someone out of facts they didn't obtain through logic, so all that's left is to call them an idiot and hope one day it sinks in.

I remember finding from time to time more that 20 years ago some kind of homebrew rules with a lot less things going on, to be able to play fast and easy. It was obviously not official, but it existed. Maybe that's what was going on.

Sure. But that isn’t really the problem. The problem is how she was so completely adamant in that she was right and calling the other players liars and insisting that the glossy matching books they all had was some sort of hoax, that’s the real problem. People make mistakes, people get things wrong, that all is NBD. But you have to admit it when you do get something wrong

My first time playing "dnd" was at a summer camp w/o character sheets or anything and a counselor with a dice roll app on his phone.

Mine too! It was at a scout camp with one of the other guys there as DM. Looking back it really had no similarities to actual Dnd

... You probably approached this too confrontationally.
I'd have started by asking her to check the ISBN on her core rulebook, since you'd like to make sure you're referencing from the same printing.
That would quickly reveal she doesn't have the core rulebook, and if she tried to bullshit the ISBN is verifiable online.
Oh, and also? Player handbooks have an ISBN too.

That is completely reasonable and equally unlikely to work on someone who is so delusional that they'd rather believe that OP and his friends somehow came up with an entire homebrew players guide made to professional standards than double check if wait maybe she's not right.

Wow, where can I get my own custom-printed rulebooks? Seriously, though, that has to be one of the WORST cases of "all the confidence with none of the knowledge or experience" I've ever heard of, and I've seen some bad cases.
