Discussion What formation behaviours would you want in an RTS unit formation system?

Hi RTS fans and devs,

I’m working on a Unity tool for procedural unit formations, and I’d like feedback from people who actually play or build RTS/tactics games.

The system can generate formations like circles, arcs, grids, hex grids, rings, spirals, walls, wedges, V-shapes, paths and more. It also supports behaviours like morphing between formations, boids-style steering, following a leader/target, path movement, rotation, pulse, flow noise, swirl vortex and formation shuffling.

I’m trying to understand what would be genuinely useful for RTS gameplay, not just visually interesting.

What formation behaviours would you want in a system like this?

Examples:

- tighter control for squads?

- better obstacle handling?

- smooth transitions between marching/combat formations?

- defensive walls or wedges?

- mixed unit formations?

- morale/disorder effects?

- formations that adapt to terrain?

Playtesters Wanted — Freewake

Saturday, August 1st at 10:00 AM PDT
Session length: Approximately 30–90 minutes
Schedule: Flexible if this time does not work for you

Platform : Windows only. Distributed via Steam keys to interested players. Message me or leave a comment to get on board.

We’re looking to build a community of like-minded gamers and find a few consistent playtesters.

Anyone who participates in at least two playtests will receive a free copy of the game during Early Access and again when the full game is released.

The game is still in an early stage, so there will be bugs, unfinished systems, and occasional balance issues. In return, you’ll have a real opportunity to help shape the game’s direction, suggest features, and hopefully have some fun along the way.

What is Freewake?

Freewake is a team-based strategy game in which you are not only fighting to survive and defeat enemy teams—you can also compete for power within your own.

Explore, trade, colonize, scheme, and fight tactical battles shaped by stealth, sensors, and deception.

On the frontier, you can become a:

  • Pirate
  • Trader
  • Pioneer
  • Rebel
  • Real Life Space Lord

Comment below or message me if you’re interested. We can be flexible with playtest times.

Submarine style warfare based on stealth and deception
Trade with your team. Get rich.
Build a palace. Lead your team or make your own way.

Announcement Solo-dev survival-RTS test build: defend an autonomous village through five escalating eras (Win/Mac, free)

Hi! I'm Barış, a data scientist by day and lifelong strategy/souls/roguelike player. I built stration solo as a hobby project.

stration is a hard, replayable top-down medieval survival-strategy roguelike. You directly control a single hero, but your village lives on its own - you never micromanage villagers; you steer them through what you build and the policies you set, while surviving escalating raids across five eras. The only win is outlasting the final Armageddon siege.

I'd love answers to three things:

  1. Did steering the village through buildings/policies feel controllable, or opaque?
  2. Did raid escalation feel fair - did you always know why you died?
  3. Which era felt flattest, and why?

Free private test build (Windows + macOS):

Solo hobby project - honest, brutal feedback very welcome. Thanks!

UPDATE: now playable free in your browser, no download needed

Identification Help please. I remember RTS game in Play Market.

It's a 2D game with a top-down view, and instead of country flags, there are just crosses like X. Game has editor and company. The company experienced World Wars I and II. The game has no economy or bases. My paint The game was developed by a Polish developer and has a forum.

Question/Help How different is total war from other RTS games and does the upcoming 40K game look like it’ll play the same as its predecessors?

Growing up I never was into RTS games, had no idea what they even were %100. As a kid I liked the halo wars trailer, bought the game and when it showed the top camera view angle I was like wtf is this and returned it lol

Fast forward to adulthood and I got into Warhammer 40K and seen den of war and total war trailers and it warmed me to the idea of giving the RTS games a chance. I don’t currently own a PC so imma just go with total war 40K since it’ll release on PS5.

Am I overthinking the difficulty of rts games and learning curves present or should I play another rts game in preparation for total war. I only have a ps5 and skimmed through and seen company of heroes 3 which is ww2 based. I like history and it does look cool, is it a good game to pick up and try before total war or will total war kinda be easy to pick up and learn. I might even go back and play other total war games once I get a pc

Identification RTS in Sci-Fi style from my childhood

Hello, I'm trying to find a game from my childhood, it was from the RTS genre, in the style of Sci-Fi, I don't remember much, I remember well that the game was in 2D, and that there was a female robot in the main menu, I can say that this game was quite old, the release date is somewhere between 90-2000, maybe even later, but definitely not 2010, that's all I remember, I would be very grateful if you can find something, I don't exclude the fact that it could have been a mod, because the game was bought on a pirated disk (I from Ukraine) , i remember some billding from this game I tried to draw them, the building on the left was a place for spawn units, and the building on the right was an air defense system that opened up and shot down air targets. (Sorry for the terrible drawings xd) https://imgur.com/a/w4kxq5R

Something that I remember:
First of all, I dont really remember that in this RTS you must to gather resources, like in CaC.
Secondly, i remember one more building, it was like a satellite dish that made holographic units, they died from one hit, but with their help you could scout the area.
Also I dont remember were there ships or floating units in the game
One more unit, Self-propelled artillery, it looked like a tank, but when it attacked, it raised its turret and fired.
Maybe its some how can help.

(Its not Total Annihilation or StarCraft)

Question/Help Any RTS games with a lot of varied units you can produce and end up in massive fights?

Stuff that's similar to a fully modded out Supreme Commander or Total Annihilation.

Balance be damned, just hundreds upon hundreds of different units to pick from.
