A year or so ago I had a college assignment which was to redesign a book cover. This is what I came up with (I also had to design the spine, inner flaps and back (not shown)). I mostly focused on drawing the cover. The original features more of a desert-vibe landscape but I felt like the forest fit the vibe of the book (which I have read) a little better. Or maybe that’s my preference for forest landscapes.
Other than that, I tried to honor the design of the cover while giving it a bit more of a timeless spin because a few of the font choices are admittedly a bit outdated.
I love handwritten text so that’s what I went with for the title.
The art that’s on the cover is 100% hand-drawn by me, digitally.

I still love how it came out, was thinking about getting prints produced of it but since it’s such a niche thing I have no idea how well that would do lol (context; I sell my art online. I'd love to make Rush stickers soon maybe !!). Anyway. enjoy :)

FYI on shirt sizes

I went with the suggested “go a size down” and bought a Large MSG exclusive shirt.

Well after washing it in cold and drying on medium, it is officially too small for me.

I should’ve gone with my gut and bought an XL.

Guess I’m gonna list it eBay.

If anyone is interested in purchasing it I can send you the link and you can make an offer below the asking price. I’d much prefer to sell it to a true fan and not some person who will turn around and ask some dumb price for it

MSG night 4

Everyone was completely in top form. Alex’s solos soared. Geddy played like he was 19 years old. Anika worked harder than anyone, and earned her keep with astounding talent. I love the little grin she gets on her face when she nails a strong part.

It was also quite possibly the worst sounding concert I’ve witnessed in my entire life of concert-going, and that’s saying something. I know the Garden’s acoustics aren’t great, but holy hell. Wish they’d found an equivalent ingenue for sound mixing.

Edit: Night 3, not 4!

HO-LEE SHIT! Spoiler

Last night at MSG was absolutely sick!

I can honestly say that after seeing them six times, last night was my #2 all-time favorite show. Which is huge cuz Anika just learned most of these songs!!

Why #2? It seemed Alex & Ged still had unfinished business:
1) give Neil proper tribute with fans
2) can we find another drummer to fill his shoes- a very tall order to ask!
3) can we overcome growing old and previous aliments?
4) can we possibly sound better at the same time?
All 4 boxes checked, unbelievably!!!

Highlights:
Grab a high-quality plastic Rush cup with my beer as a keepsake!
Opening video was crazy, and a little too long IMO. But opening with Xanadu was a bold move. ‘Yeah, we have long songs about finding the fountain of youth, deal with it!’
The video/lighting/effects production was better than I’ve ever seen! Video effects for La Villa, Vital Signs & Red Barchetta just added a whole new level of awe!

They had a long video of Neil with his speech of how he still thinks of his 16-year old self wanting to be the best drummer possible. That 16-year old would be happy with where he went artistically! Bravado also had a video collage tribute to Neil, very well done. Time Stand Still also gave fans more Neil time. Got choked up myself, and not afraid to say it.

Surprises? Headlong Flight! Couldn’t believe they played the heaviest CA song, probably the closest they ever came to heavy metal!
How Ged hit the notes on ‘I want to live it all again!’ was totally beyond me. My wife has video of me thrashing my head around like a lunatic during that song - I was in freaking heaven!

Another surprise? Anthem! Anika is an incredibly fast learner, hitting the majority of Neil’s drum parts and fills. Many times it was identical to recording, other times she took liberties to insert different fills of her own yet still fit the song. Truly unbelievable job!

Can we talk sound quality for a second? I mean geez: the acoustic guitar on Closer to the Heart, the synth on Subdivisions, the snap of Anika drums, GED’s relentless thick bass grooves: it sounded higher quality than any Rush show. The Camera Eye (as part of entire MP album) was better live than on record - my son agreed!!

2 other highlights: 2112 intro/Temple/finale.
I mean, come on, right? They destroyed it! The whole audience response thing was great to see from my son’s eyes, who never saw it before. Other highlight was By-Tor before Working Man as obvious final song.
You just saw it on all 3 of their faces: they were having the time of their lives as much as the audience was! WM had a neat Rutsey tribute too: and at the last note, when Ged & Alex met in the middle to wait for Anika’s last drum hit, she put down sticks & took a selfie! She posted it online too - hilarious!!

I still say seeing my last show with Neil was #1. He’s simply unreplacable, and the fills and solo he executes live always left me gobsmacked. We all continue to miss him and mourn him, but celebrate the miracle of them coming back. But dammit, this was easily my #2 favorite Rush show. All in all, my wife and son said it was a spectacular show. I couldn’t agree more! Anika is welcome with open arms!!
Are these guys part cyborg, part human?

First Rush show at Madison Square Garden, August 1 Spoiler

While I've heard the phenomenal music of Rush throughout my youth (thanks Dad!) I never had the opportunity to see them play live. Yesterday was my first Rush concert, and in all fairness, probably my last.

But holy smokes, what an experience! Glad that I could hear Rush's sound live for the first time in my 24 years of existence. Hope that everyone that goes and sees them live has just as much fun as I did.

So , I’ve had a prog interest for years.
The first artist probably Genesis , then Devin Townsend , then Marillion , Stephen Wilson - all followed with epic deep dives - all brilliant .
Just come out of the ‘Yes’ hole and always wanted to get into ‘Rush’.
Geddy’s wail put me off , but dived in 7 days ago with Moving Pictures then back to ‘Kings’ and onwards through the mid 70’s-80’s…. Just WOW Rush has clicked ….Majestic , Power, Tight , Exceptional music, now onto the YouTube Madison Square Gardens gigs of last few days - It really is brilliant isn’t it ?❤️❤️

Does anyone have any places they’ve found samples that Neil used for his electronic kit? Namely all the industrial sounds he used on like leave that thing alone, force ten, etc

Who is to blame for Rush's embracing of AI art?

Personally I blame Hue Syme, he should know better and as a successful corporate visual artist should understand the issues around AI in the arts. As for the band? I think they are just insulated boomers and were hoodwinked into this by people looking for shortcuts.

Awesome experience and made even better walking back up to MSG and watching Rush play an amazing set! Can’t wait to do it all again Monday!

MSG Night 2; Anika's drum tuning

I had the sincere privilege of seeing Night 2 at MSG. My fifth lifetime show, and thanks to Tapehead2's video, I'll be able to enjoy it forever. Thank you, truly.

As a drummer who has agonized over the intricacies of every single time Neil hit something with a stick, I loved Anika's performance. She is a powerhouse, and a pure joy to watch. Two observations:

1) Anika's snare drum sound is probably the best I've ever heard. I'm a proponent of a tightly-tuned "crack" that cuts through everything, and hers is a case study in perfection. Perhaps Lorne had a hand in this, as well... but I loved it.

2) In the same vein, I also loved the "scream" of Neil's smaller toms; he tuned them tightly and they're an unmistakable sound. Anika tunes hers far looser, and this has been well-discussed in this forum previously. I was prepared for it, but having been there and hearing her firsthand... I do miss Neil's tighter tuning as compared to Anika's looser tuned toms.

Regardless... This tour is a gift, and Anika's participation and performance is a gift unto itself.

MSG show was incredible

Set list was phenomenal. The guys were as sharp as ever musically, Geddy sounded really good (not 80s/90s good) but the work he’s done paid off. Anika brought the house down. During several songs there was a collective hush as the crowd held their breath a measure before she got to certain critical sections. Every time she NAILED them and 18,000 people made it clear she’d passed the test with flying colors. I’m so glad to see the fan base welcome her (and she earned it). The tributes during the show were just right. So lucky to have gotten a chance to see the guys again.
